REUTERS/Leonhard Foeger/ File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Ross Brawn is tipping a resurgent McLaren to take the fight to dominant Red Bull and triple world champion Max Verstappen next season. So, I think with that improvement going into next season they can be a real threat. Brawn was also optimistic Ferrari would improve under Fred Vasseur's guidance but recognised Red Bull would not be standing still and had the added benefit of being able to switch attention early to next year's car. Red Bull have so far won 19 of 20 races, with Verstappen triumphant 17 times -- a record for a single season that he can extend in Las Vegas this weekend -- and team mate Sergio Perez twice. I think sometimes when you get a team dominating you'd hope that both drivers would be fighting each other and that hasn't happened with Red Bull, which is a shame," said Brawn.

Russell's Brazil retirement no problem for last two races
  + stars: | 2023-11-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 8 (Reuters) - George Russell's engine-related retirement from last Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix will have no knock-on effects for the last two races of the Formula One season, Mercedes said in a team debrief on Wednesday. The Briton was retired at Interlagos as a precaution after rising temperatures in the power unit risked failure and wider damage to the car. Mercedes head of trackside performance Riccardo Musconi said Russell was always scheduled to have a different power unit for Las Vegas and the Abu Dhabi season-ender. "He will be on a different power unit for the final two races so there is no issue from that point of view." Musconi said Hamilton's disqualification from second place in last month's U.S. Grand Prix in Austin for excessive wear of the under-car plank might have contributed to the lack of pace, without being the determining factor.

Technical head Elliott leaves Mercedes F1 team
  + stars: | 2023-10-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Former Formula One world champions Mercedes announced the surprise departure of chief technical officer (CTO) Mike Elliott on Tuesday only months after he took on the role in a job swap with James Allison. Elliott had been appointed technical director in July 2021, with Allison moving to the CTO role, but they switched positions last April after Mercedes made a slow start to the season following a difficult 2022. Red Bull have won the last three drivers' titles with Max Verstappen as well as the 2022 and 2023 constructors' championships. Mercedes said Elliott, who had been with the team for 11 years and through their record eight successive constructors' titles, had chosen to depart after developing a technical strategy for the future. "Mike is a fiercely intelligent technical brain and a great team-player; he has made a strong contribution not just to winning racing cars but also to building the culture of our team.

The two will form a joint venture that will give Stellantis the exclusive rights to produce, export and sell the Chinese brand’s vehicles outside Greater China. Stellantis will control the joint venture, with a 51% stake, while Leapmotor will take a 49% share. In July, Volkswagen announced it was buying a 5% stake in Chinese EV maker Xpeng and unveiled a strategic partnership to jointly develop new vehicles. News of Stellantis’ latest partnership comes about a year after it terminated its joint venture in China with Guangzhou Automobile Group Company (GAC). Stellantis is acquiring Leapmotor shares at a price of 43.8 Hong Kong dollars ($5.6) apiece, according to a Thursday stock exchange filing by the Chinese firm.

The company on Thursday reported a 12.4% adjusted return on sales in its cars division in the third quarter. Mercedes-Benz described the market environment as "subdued", but Wilhelm said "we are beyond the worst" when it comes to inflation and energy pricing. Mercedes-Benz earlier this month reported a 4% drop in overall third-quarter sales, with top-end sales down 11%, partly caused by model changeovers and a shortage in 48-volt systems supplied by Bosch. Car revenue dipped 3.8% due to the fall in deliveries, but the average selling price remained stable, the company said. (AP) — A manhunt for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Maryland judge continued for a fourth day Sunday as authorities completed their search of an area where the suspect's SUV was found. Officials said Pedro Argote, 49, is suspected of gunning down Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson in his driveway on Thursday, hours after Wilkinson ruled against him in a divorce case. On Sunday, the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post that authorities have concluded their search of the Williamsport area. “No further information indicates that Argote is still in the immediate area,” the sheriff's office said. Wilkinson, 52, was shot the same day he awarded custody of Argote’s children to his wife.

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain addresses the audience during a rally in support of striking UAW members in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., September 15, 2023. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 19 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain will hold a Facebook Live event on Friday, the union said, as 34,000 of its members continue selective strikes against the Detroit Three automakers over the failure to reach agreements on new contracts. The UAW last expanded its strikes on Oct. 11 when members walked out at Ford's Kentucky truck plant, the company's largest and most profitable plant globally. Fain said last week that UAW members would now walk out of additional Detroit Three facilities without warning rather than waiting until Fridays to announce new plans, as the union had done initially. UAW members who went on strike at Mercedes supplier ZF's plant in Alabama last month demanding higher pay and better healthcare benefits ended a nearly month-long walkout on Thursday.

Press a button on the steering wheel rim and the lights turn turquoise blue. Then you no longer have to hold the steering wheel or watch the road. (Mercedes declined to say how many German drivers have purchased Drive Pilot, though, so it’s unclear how impressive that really is.) Drive Pilot responded the way many automated driving systems do in these sorts of situations. I had assumed that, when I turned Drive Pilot off, it would return to that semi-autonomous mode.

Nio, when contacted, denied it talked to Mercedes on a collaboration, calling it "untrue", without elaborating. Mercedes said in a separate response that there were no collaboration plans with Nio at the moment. Chinese EV companies may also be able to navigate potential trade barriers better by forging such tie-ups. Nio, whose investors include Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings (0700.HK), has publicly called for more such tie-ups with established automakers. Drive Pilot can take over in traffic jams, letting you kick back, watch a movie, or read a book. Drive Pilot will be available in the electric EQS, shown here, as well as the gas-powered S-Class sedan. Over time, Mercedes plans to teach Drive Pilot to function in more places and at higher speeds. One lidar sensor actually helps Drive Pilot see in 3D, the other is just for symmetry. For people subjected to that sort of treatment daily — or, tragically, twice a day — Drive Pilot could be a game changer.

Striking United Auto Workers members picket outside the Stellantis Jeep plant, in Toledo, Ohio, U.S. September 19, 2023. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook Acquire Licensing RightsSept 20 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union said on Wednesday that 190 workers went on strike at Mercedes-supplier ZF's plant in Alabama, demanding higher pay and better healthcare benefits. The workers are also seeking an end to the tier system of wages, under which older employees get higher pay than newer workers for the same job. ZF, which makes front axles used by Mercedes, said the plant in Tuscaloosa would operate while talks with the union continue. UAW members are also on a separate strike at three plants operated by the Detroit Three automakers - Ford Motor (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI) - demanding better contracts from the companies.

Stellantis provided a glimmer of hope for a breakthrough by giving the union a new contract proposal. It was not clear whether the Stellantis offer would satisfy union President Shawn Fain, who vows to announce new strike targets on Friday unless there is “serious progress” toward agreements with GM, Stellantis and Ford. So far UAW workers are striking at just three factories — one for each company, including a GM assembly plant near St. Louis. The workers are covered under a different contract than those that UAW is negotiating with the three big automakers. If ratified, it would cover more than 5,000 workers and provide a model for similar deals at GM and Stellantis operations in Canada.

The Chinese auto industry has been booming in recent years. Chinese EV companies are expected to outsell foreign brands there, including Ford, GM, and others, for the first time this year. This is worrying executives at some major legacy auto companies, according to several reports out of the Munich auto show. Consulting firm KPMG estimates Chinese companies could account for 15% of market share in Europe within just two years. Chinese EV companies also have an edge against rivals in producing EVs at bigger scale and lower costs, a crucial measure of any electric car companies' future success.

REUTERS/Angelika Warmuth Acquire Licensing RightsMUNICH, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) does not expect its sales in Europe to be all-electric by 2030 but will have its line-up ready, Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius said in an interview at the Munich car show. The premium carmaker has long said it is targeting all-electric sales by 2030 "where markets allow", saying customers will ultimately decide what product they want and pointing to the need for infrastructure to support the transition to electric vehicles (EV). Europe's EV market had grown significantly in recent years but likely wouldn't be ready for all-electric sales by 2030, Kaellenius said on the sidelines of the Munich show. "It's not going to be 100% in 2030, obviously... from the whole European market, but probably from the Mercedes side as well," he said. EV sales in Europe grew nearly 55% in the first seven months of 2023, to about 820,000 vehicles, making up about 13% of all car sales.

Mercedes is headed for the release of a new EV that gets more mileage on a single charge than Tesla. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe mileage range of a new fully electric car from Mercedes could easily outshine that of any Tesla. Its current range on a single charge, Mercedes says, is 466 miles, beating by about 70 miles the longest proposed range of any Tesla, the electric car company run by Elon Musk. "This car is extremely important for innovation reasons and to push the limits for what we can do with a series car." Some Tesla drivers have noticed that the range they could actually drive on a single charge was often half of what was promoted by the car company.
