An unspoken question lingers on people's faces when they hear our family of five took a gap year to travel around South America. We budgeted about $12,000 for flights, estimating six one-way flights at about $2,000 each for our family of five. All told, we expected the trip to cost about $60,000, or less than a year of life at home in Chicagoland. We funded our trip by renting out our home in the Chicago suburbs, which covered our home upkeep and nearly 40% of our travel expenses. On the trip, we didn't know where we'd be in two months or how much money we'd bring in.

Read previewThe involuntary manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin over the 2021 death of "Rust" cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has been dismissed, but the actor isn't able to put all the legal proceedings behind him just yet. While a New Mexico judge dismissed the case after determining that the state withheld key evidence from Baldwin's defense, the actor still faces civil lawsuits from Hutchins' family. Baldwin's lawyers have sent letters to New Mexico prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza asking them to preserve documents for future litigation, according to Reuters. Related storiesArmorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for the film's prop weapons, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March and was later sentenced to 18 months in prison. But the impact of ancient DNA, which has revolutionized archaeology in Europe and higher latitudes, has been more limited in tropical areas because DNA degrades more easily in warm conditions. However, recent advances in ancient DNA technology are expanding its reach, she said. The man took her to his brother Don Rene Mendoza, who, by sheer chance, was a master of the trade. After speaking with Amezkua for more than five hours, Mendoza agreed to pass the craft tradition on to her. The Spanish also began importing papel china — thin, tissue-like paper from China, often used to wrap other goods. Why It’s So Expensive to Live in Phoenix
  + stars: | 2024-03-29 | by ( Peter S. Goodman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the five years since they began their life together in the desert sprawl of greater Phoenix, Devon Lawrence and Eren Mendoza have bounced from one itinerant home to another. They have camped alongside a freeway off-ramp, using a gas station sink as their bath and a plastic tarp as their refuge from the relentless sun. For the last two years, they have crammed into rooms at motels, paying as much as $650 a week. Ms. Mendoza and Mr. Lawrence are both 32, and both have jobs. Yet they have been stymied in their reach for a modest dream: They cannot find an affordable home in a safe neighborhood in Phoenix, where rents have roughly doubled over the last decade.

For two Texas-based bitcoin miners, the oil deposit offers a dream resource: wasted energy. Brent Whitehead and Matt Lohstroh, both graduates of Texas A&M University, have been mining bitcoin on the oil fields of East Texas since 2019. That's when they founded Giga Energy with the goal of taking flared natural gas and turning it into electricity to run bitcoin mines, which are notoriously power-thirsty. Whitehead comes from a long line of "wildcats," a term used to describe those who engage in high-risk exploratory drilling. The leak exposes the journalists to potential identity theft and could compromise their physical security because the data includes home addresses. "The safety of our journalists is paramount, and we are deeply troubled by this leak of personal data. "What I'm most worried about is possible identity theft and that someone misuses my personal data to commit fraud," said Morales, designated as the paper's spokesman on the matter. The Nicaraguan authorities said on Sunday that they had released 19 clergymen who had been jailed and handed them over to the Vatican, the latest development in the autocratic government’s longstanding persecution of the Roman Catholic Church. Among those set free was Bishop Rolando Álvarez, one of the most prominent critics of the government left in Nicaragua, who had been convicted of treason and sentenced to 26 years in prison last February. Another bishop, Isidoro Mora, 15 priests and two seminarians were also released.
