Tesla will open a new Megafactory in Shanghai, China, that is capable of producing 10,000 Megapacks a year, the company announced in a tweet Sunday. A Megapack is a very large battery that stores energy, helps stabilize the power grid and prevents outages. Tesla currently has a Megafactory in Lathrop, California, that is capable of producing 10,000 Megapacks units each year, according to the company's website. In a tweet Sunday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the factory in China will supplement output from the factory in California. Tesla and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Combined with a Tesla Megapack storage battery, the hydrogen and solar can deliver enough electricity to power the site's Ene-Farm fuel cell factory. As bullet trains whiz by at 285 kilometers per hour, Panasonic's Norihiko Kawamura looks over Japan's tallest hydrogen storage tank. The 14-meter structure looms over the Tokaido Shinkansen Line tracks outside the ancient capital of Kyoto, as well as a large array of solar panels, hydrogen fuel cells and Tesla Megapack storage batteries. The power sources can generate enough juice to run part of the manufacturing site using renewable energy only.

General Motors is launching a division that provides homeowners with power storage technology. GM Energy will provide battery storage devices, and let drivers use EVs to power their homes. GM Energy will offer solar energy and battery storage products so electric vehicle owners can use their cars as power sources when needed, the company announced on Tuesday. GM Energy will use SunPower to provide customers with solar panels, with wall-mounted battery storage from Ultium and include its existing charging service called Ultium Charge 360. Tesla's energy storage business includes its Powerwall storage and Megapack storage units.

At least one Tesla Megapack caught fire early Tuesday morning at the energy storage facility operated by utility PG&E in Monterey, California. PG&E commissioned the 182.5-megawatt (MW) Tesla Megapack system, known as the Elkhorn Battery at Moss Landing, in April this year. The fires in the energy storage systems at Moss Landing are reminiscent of incidents involving Tesla Megapacks in Australia. Following the fire, some residents near the Elkhorn Battery substation at Moss Landing were told to shelter in place due to emissions. PG&E's Jeff Smith noted, "Safety systems at the facility worked as designed when the issue was detected, and automatically disconnected the battery storage facility from the electrical grid."

Tesla last year broke ground on its factory in Lathrop, California, to produce its large-scale, utility storage battery unit Megapack. PG&E in April announced the commissioning of its 182.5-megawatt (MW) Tesla Megapack battery energy storage system (BESS) – known as the Elkhorn Battery – located at its Moss Landing electric substation in Monterey County.
