"I think, with respect to former President Trump, there's some question about whether or not it's a bullet or shrapnel that, you know, hit his ear," Wray said. Jordan followed up, "It's my understanding that the very first one was the one that hit the president. "As I sit here right now, I don't know the answer to that. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, appointed Wray as FBI director in 2017. According to the FBI’s analysis of Thomas Matthew Crooks’ laptop, Crooks searched how far Lee Harvey Oswald was when he shot and killed President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The search was on July 6, the same day the Trump rally was announced. “That’s a search that’s obviously significant in terms of his state of mind,” the FBI director added. The drone was in the air for approximately 11 minutes, and investigators believe Crooks watched a live feed from the drone on his phone. The FBI is investigating the shooting as both an attempted assassination and as a potential act of domestic terrorism.

CNN —A local law enforcement commissioner revealed during a House Homeland Security hearing on Tuesday stunning new details about the security failures that led to the near assassination of Donald Trump, raising more questions for the embattled US Secret Service. Paris told lawmakers about the communications between the Secret Service and local law enforcement who initially spotted Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would-be assassin. “That is my understanding,” Paris said, adding that the officers went searching with other local officers in the area. State Police then received a call and a text from the ESU about Crooks’ activity that they immediately relayed to Secret Service. State Police “verbally turned right around and gave it to the Secret Service,” Paris said.

"The assassination attempt of former President Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades," Kimberly Cheatle said Monday morning. With an AR-15, he injured Trump's ear, killed attendee Corey Comperatore, and injured two others before a Secret Service countersniper killed him. Cheatle declined to answer substantive questions, citing an "ongoing investigation" from the FBI as well as the Secret Service. Neither the FBI nor the Secret Service have said whether they would make the investigation results public, as the agencies did in the aftermath of the Reagan shooting. Ro Khanna pointed out that the Secret Service director who ran the agency when Reagan was shot eventually resigned from his post. In the days following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Cheatle has done no press conferences and very few interviews. “We would have never let him go out there if we thought there was a threat to him,” one source present with Trump told CNN. Cheatle is a nearly three-decade veteran of the Secret Service, serving in various field offices and vice presidential details including then-Vice President Joe Biden’s detail. CNN —Donald Trump may not have changed in the past week, but the presidential race clearly has. ► Watched President Joe Biden be isolated by the growing number of Democrats who worry he can’t beat him. If Biden were to look for inspiration on how to overcome the naysayers, he could find it in Trump. When Democrats win those states, they can win the White House. In the intervening days, CNN has learned that Crooks searched for information on both Trump and Biden, including for details about the Democratic National Convention.

CNN —The Trump rally shooter searched online for information on the arrest of a Michigan mass shooter and his parents, who were prosecuted in a 2021 high school shooting. A week before the shooting, Thomas Matthew Crooks searched online for the date of the Democratic National Convention and where Trump planned to speak, as well as other searches for Trump and President Joe Biden. Unlike other mass shooters who often leave behind manifestos or writings to explain their attack, Crooks left behind few clues, in his bedroom or online. Investigators have focused on Crooks’ online activity in the months and days before the attack. He searched for the date and location of the Democratic National Convention, which takes place in August in Chicago, and for the location of the Trump rally.

Federal investigators are examining the possibility that a would-be assassin scoped out the area where former President Donald J. Trump was to speak six days before the campaign rally in Pennsylvania where Mr. Trump was wounded. Mr. Crooks opened fire from a warehouse roof at the site on Saturday, grazing the former president’s right ear, killing a rally attendee and seriously injuring two others. The new details about Mr. Crooks’s possible whereabouts on July 7 mean that he might have checked out the site even before law enforcement officials did a security assessment. The Secret Service met with local law enforcement officers for a first walk-through on July 8, and finalized plans a few days later. is responsible for investigating the attempted assassination, but officials have not said whether the bureau intends to write a report.

officials told members of Congress on Wednesday that the gunman who tried to kill former President Donald J. Trump used his cellphone and other devices to search images of Mr. Trump and President Biden, along with an array of public figures. The disclosures, made during private briefings to lawmakers by the F.B.I. and the head of the embattled Secret Service, offered the most complete portrait so far of a would-be assassin with no criminal history, or even clearly discernible political beliefs, who came close to killing Mr. Trump. Several former classmates have said they never heard the gunman express any particular political ideology. But Vincent Taormina, a former classmate who said he attended middle school and high school with the gunman, said in an interview that Mr. Crooks showed a general disdain for politicians in both parties.

About an hour before a gunman let loose a volley of bullets that nearly assassinated a former president, the law enforcement contingent in Butler, Pa., was on the verge of a great policing success. Among the thousands of people streaming in to cheer former President Donald J. Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday, local officers spotted one skinny young man acting oddly and notified other law enforcement. The suspicious man did not appear to have a weapon. Remarkably, law enforcement had found the right man — Thomas Matthew Crooks, a would-be assassin, though officers did not know that at the time. Twenty minutes before violence erupted, a sniper, from a distance, spotted Mr. Crooks again and took his picture.
