A jury has found a man guilty of conspiring to steal a passenger jet and commit a 9/11-inspired attack under the direction of Somalian terrorist organization “al Shabaab.”Cholo Abdi Abdullah, 34, was found guilty Monday on six counts including conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and conspiring to murder U.S. nationals. Abdullah had sworn allegiance to Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mijahideen, the militant Islamist group commonly known as “al Shabaab,” based in Somalia, prosecutors said. He took part in a plot to hijack a commercial plane and crash it into a building in the U.S., reminiscent of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, prosecutors said. He also sent encrypted messages to his al Shabaab handler which included details on post-9/11 hijackings. On Monday, he was further convicted on counts of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, conspiring to commit aircraft piracy, conspiring to destroy aircraft, and conspiring to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.

A disturbance in the Caribbean strengthened into Tropical Storm Rafael on Monday afternoon. Rafael is the 17th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, and will be the 11th hurricane if it strengthens further, as expected. The storm system is expected to approach the United States later in the week, the hurricane center said, and a tropical storm watch was issued Monday afternoon for the lower and middle Florida Keys and for the Dry Tortugas. A hurricane warning has been issued for the Cayman Islands, and a tropical storm warning is in effect for Jamaica. The government of Cuba issued a hurricane watch for a handful of provinces, and a tropical storm watch for other areas.

A woman convicted of dressing up as a clown in 1990 and murdering the wife of a man she later married has been released from prison, putting to rest one of the more bizarre cold cases Florida has ever seen. Keen-Warren was arrested in 2017 in Washington County, Virginia, in connection with Warren’s 1990 murder. Initially, suspicion quickly focused on Michael Warren, the victim’s husband, as friends and family said the couple was having marital problems. Michael Warren served three years in prison, and in 1997 he vanished. But he re-emerged in 2002, marrying Sheila Keen — the same Sheila Keen-Warren who’s now charged with his ex-wife’s murder.

A Florida man has been charged after he allegedly left two improvised explosive devices in bathrooms at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa. Eckley allegedly left two remote-controlled improvised explosive devices inside two male restrooms at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino on Sept. 29, FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass said in a news conference. One of the devices was found by an employee, who reported it, and the casino was eventually evacuated out of caution. The investigation found that three days prior to the discovery of the devices, a man was seen behaving “very suspiciously” at the casino on Sept. 25. The incident is still under investigation and it's not clear what motivated Eckley to leave the explosives in the casino.

A woman who anonymously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs this month for rape must reveal her name or her lawsuit will be tossed out, a judge has ruled. The complaint also said that Combs has had no contact with Doe in the years since, and noted that Combs is currently detained. A New York woman has been charged with assault as a hate crime after she allegedly pepper-sprayed her Muslim Uber driver as he praying at a red light, prosecutors said Thursday. Jennifer Guilbeault, 23, allegedly launched the “anti-Muslim” attack on July 31, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday. A few minutes later the driver called 911 and Guilbeault was arrested at the scene. Guilbeault has been charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with second-degree assault as a hate crime, third-degree assault as a hate crime, and second-degree aggravated harassment. “As alleged, Jennifer Guilbeault senselessly assaulted a Muslim Uber driver while he was just doing his job,” District Attorney Alvin L. Five people have been charged in Texas, accused of organizing and participating in an illegal cheating scheme that certified more than 200 unqualified teachers and saw the plot’s “kingpin” rake in more than $1 million, prosecutors announced. Investigators noticed a pattern: Numerous teacher certification candidates who previously failed certification exams would drive from faraway Texas cities to the Houston area to take an exam. Then a tip came in that exposed the cheating scheme. He'd pay her about 20% of the $2,500 to allow the cheating, Levine said. “They are going to go over every teacher, I’m sure, and take whatever action they see fit if they believe someone fraudulently obtained a certification,” Levine said.

The owner of a Boston area pizza chain who forced undocumented victims to work for him in grueling conditions, and under violent physical abuse and threats of deportation, has been sentenced to over eight years in prison. He was convicted in a jury trial on three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor in June. The sentencing of Papantoniadis marks just the latest in a string of complaints over labor practices at his businesses. In 2019, the business owners were ordered to pay more than $300,000 in back wages, according to NBC Boston. The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office said it received three complaints since 2019 against Stash’s Pizza, similarly over wage and hour violations.

Two men have been convicted of robbing an off-duty Secret Service agent at gunpoint after the agent had finished working at a Los Angeles fundraiser that President Joe Biden attended, prosecutors said Monday. A San Francisco man has sued Alaska Airlines alleging negligence led to the death of his beloved 3-year-old French bulldog after he was asked to move from first-class to coach on a flight from New York to San Francisco. Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee who was found in the store’s walk-in oven Saturday in Canada.
