[1/5] The new 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, a $300,000 limited-edition performance car, is shown in this undated company handout photo released to Reuters on August 17, 2023. Ford Motor Company/Handout via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsAug 17 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) is joining rival General Motors in the U.S. supercar ranks with the launch of the 2025 Mustang GTD, a limited-edition, high-performance hot rod priced from $300,000. The Mustang GTD is loosely based on the 2024 Mustang coupe that is priced from around $31,000. But the Mustang GTD really has more in common with the new Mustang GT3 racecar that is expected to compete next year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world's premier endurance races. A spokesperson would say only that GTD production will be "more than 50 cars."

CNN —Ford has just unveiled the 800-horsepower Ford Mustang GTD which will be available in late 2024 or early 2025 at a starting price around $300,000. “Ford vs. Ferrari” recounted the 1960s Le Mans races won by the Ford GT40 race car which was developed specifically to spite the Italian automaker after Ford couldn’t buy the company. In the 2000s, Ford has produced two modern versions of the Ford GT that have both become highly collectible. The Ford Mustang GTD's body is made almost entirely from carbon fiber. Multimatic is a specialist automotive company that also works on the Mustang GT3 race car.

More than 50 million Americans are set to bake under dangerously high temperatures this week, from California to Texas to Florida, as a heat wave builds across the southern United States. The heat waves stretching across North America and Europe this month would have been "virtually impossible" without the human-induced climate emergency, according to a new scientific study. Published Tuesday by the World Weather Attribution group, the study said heat waves are among the deadliest natural hazards with thousands of people dying from heat-related causes each year. Ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions mean these events are not rare anymore, the study said. "Totally unsurprising but important result," Friederike Otto, a scientist and senior lecturer at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change in London, who contributed to the research, said via Twitter.

French car maker Renault first-half sales jump 13%

Companies Renault SA FollowJuly 19 (Reuters) - French car maker Renault (RENA.PA) on Wednesday said its worldwide sales rose 13% in the first six months of the year, with a 24% increase in Europe. The rebound in sales comes after four consecutive years of declines. Renault's order backlog in Europe represented 3.4 months of sales at the end of June 2023 and it should remain above the target of 2 months throughout the year, even with a market down 30% compared with 2019, the car maker said. Alpine, Renault's premium sports brand relaunched in 2017, sold more than 1,800 units in the same period, with registrations up by 9%, helped by the launch of the Alpine A110 San Remo 73 and the Alpine A110 R Le Mans. Brown | Afp | Getty ImagesIf you feel like record-level extreme weather events are happening with alarming frequency, you're not alone. Global warming is making extreme weather events more severe, scientists said. But what is clear is that climate change makes it more likely that an extreme weather event will happen. "Higher temperatures from climate change are indisputable, and with each degree increase we're multiplying our changes of getting an extreme heat wave. Decreasing the greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels will help moderate the extreme weather trends.

June 20 (Reuters) - Sergio Perez's seat with Red Bull is safe for this Formula One season, former champion Jenson Button said on Tuesday, but if the Mexican's struggles continue he could be looking for another team next year. Horner also said the team was going to stand by Perez and help him through the slump but Red Bull have not always shown patience with under-performing drivers. DRIVERS SHAKE-UPScenarios are starting to emerge about what a possible drivers shake-up at Red Bull might look like. One rumour has Ricciardo, who previously drove for Red Bull from 2014-18, going from a reserve role to a seat with sister outfit AlphaTauri, replacing under-performing Nick de Vries. Such a move would allow Australian Ricciardo to remove some competitive rust and make a seamless transition back into the Red Bull seat if Perez was dumped.

Urging patience, Ukraine defense advisor Yuriy Sak told CNBC: "We understand that everybody — and us more than anybody else — wants [the counteroffensive] to be progressing faster." Red Bull have won 23 of the last 26 races, and 17 of the last 18, and will be only the fifth constructor to hit 100. Verstappen won last year in Canada from pole position ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, the seven times world champion who has won a record-equalling seven times there. "Of course, last year's win is still in my mind so hopefully we can do something similar this weekend," said Verstappen. Mercedes overtook Aston Martin for second place in the constructors' standings after Spain, where they were Red Bull's closest rivals. Ferrari received a morale boost last weekend when they won the Le Mans 24 Hours and enjoyed a strong weekend in Montreal last year.

Bringing Some Loud NASCAR to Le Mans

When the possibility of a NASCAR Cup Series car competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race was first discussed two years ago, there was some surprise. “I talked to a few people, traditional sports-car folks and traditional racing folks, and when I told them about the project, they were scratching their head like, ‘You’re going to do what?’” John Doonan, president of the International Motor Sports Association, said in an interview. Doonan is also the project leader of NASCAR’s return to Le Mans 47 years after the series was last involved, when a Dodge Charger and a Ford Torino failed to finish the raceChevrolet, a two-time winner in the GTE Pro class, is supplying the car, a Camaro ZL1 run by Hendrick Motorsports of North Carolina that is the Garage 56 entry for Le Mans, which celebrates its centenary this year.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which was first held in May 1923 to help spur innovation in the growing automotive industry by emphasizing not just speed, but also efficiency, reliability and endurance. “It is a very demanding race, and the greatest race,” said Tom Kristensen, who has won Le Mans a record nine times. The Automobile Club de l’Ouest organized that first race, designing a course on public roads south of Le Mans that bisected forests and passed residential areas.

A Stunning Comeback for Fernando Alonso in Formula 1
  + stars: | 2023-05-18 | by ( Ian Parkes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In 2018, after 17 seasons of dedicating his life to Formula 1, Fernando Alonso had enough. With two world titles and 32 Grand Prix victories, he walked away, albeit unfulfilled. “Now, I’m proving I’m still fast, at whatever age — that’s part of the comeback story. Despite his strong start this season, it has been 10 years since Alonso, 41, last won a Grand Prix. Max Verstappen of Red Bull, the reigning two-time champion who leads this year’s title race, would like to see Alonso win again.
Marquez will not serve penalty for Portugal crash, says FIM

May 9 (Reuters) - Honda rider Marc Marquez will not serve a double long lap penalty imposed for his crash with Miguel Oliveira in Portugal, the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) said on Tuesday. Marquez was granted a stay of execution last month on the penalty imposed after the six-times premier class champion locked up and barged straight into Oliveira, with both crashing out in the season-opener. "Marc Marquez is hence allowed to compete in the next race in which he will be able to participate, without any further sanction," FIM said in a statement. Marquez, who won his last title in 2019, has scored only seven points this season after finishing third in the sprint race in Portugal. The 30-year-old is targeting a return at the next round at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans, which will host the 1,000th Grand Prix in history.
LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) - Former Formula One champion Jenson Button wants to drive a Hypercar at Le Mans next year and says he would be up for a full season of the world endurance championship if the right opportunity comes along. The Briton will be taking part in the 24 Hours race at the Sarthe circuit on June 10-11 this year as part of a special NASCAR entry with seven times NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and former Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller. Johnson, 47, has never been to Le Mans while Button, 43, endured a short-lived debut in 2018 with the Russian-backed SMP team. The World Endurance Championship (WEC) has seven rounds, including Le Mans, while the North American IMSA series has 11 but is nearer to home. "I’m running out of items, especially in a major professional setting," said the Californian, who was never able to race Le Mans previously due to calendar clashes with NASCAR and IndyCars.
Button expects to see Hamilton fighting on in 2024

LONDON, May 2 (Reuters) - Former world champion Jenson Button expects to see Lewis Hamilton chasing a record eighth Formula One title next year despite speculation the Mercedes driver could walk away from the sport. "I don't think Lewis is going to walk away from the sport," Button told reporters on Tuesday after discussing his preparations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race with a special NASCAR entry. He's in a car that's not as good as what he's used to, I get that. "It probably won't be this year but in 2024, I think we'll see Lewis Hamilton on the grid. I think he's still hungry to win another world championship."

Marquez underwent surgery to his right hand after a collision in the season-opening race in Portugal last month and did not race in the last round in Texas. Honda said the six-times premier class champion underwent checks on Tuesday and the medical team advised him to continue his recovery and focus on a possible return for the French GP, scheduled for May 12-14. "Together with the medical team, we decided not to take any risks, to wait two more weeks and return in Le Mans." Marquez will be replaced by Iker Lecuona at the Spanish GP. April 10 (Reuters) - The absence of many first-choice players has presented a "massive opportunity" for others to stake their claim in Canada's World Cup squad, coach Bev Priestman said as the Olympic champions prepare to face France in a friendly on Tuesday. "There's a massive opportunity for anybody that gets on the pitch. And, you know, to get that one camp away from your World Cup squad being announced and, you know, going into that World Cup squad, I think I have to look at the opportunity in it and see the bigger picture." "I don't think it's a World Cup injury, but it's not a 'she'll be ready, you know, this week' type injury," said Priestman. Herve Renard took the reins late last month after leading Saudi Arabia to a shock group-stage win over eventual champions Argentina in last year's men's World Cup.

Insider interviewed Rep. George Santos' 24-year-old press secretary, Gabrielle Lipsky. The scandal-ridden lawmaker is facing calls to resign, but Lipsky still thinks he's a "borderline genius." Compared to Gabrielle Lipsky, the 24-year-old press secretary for embattled congressman George Santos, we probably have it easy. Being the press secretary for a member of Congress was always likely to involve long hours, challenging work, and lots of stress. Despite all this, Lipsky says that working for Santos, who she claims is a "borderline genius," is an invaluable learning experience.
