LONDON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - British sandwich and coffee chain Pret A Manger will launch its monthly coffee subscription service in the United States and France this year after the scheme proved a success in its home market, it said on Thursday. In April it rebranded the service as "Club Pret". A spokesperson for Pret said the price of the subscription service in the U.S. and France had not yet been confirmed. Pret said the rebranded subscription service in the UK had seen 17.8 million redemptions in its first three months, up 31% year-on-year.

After about 90 minutes of investigating, police allowed workers in three Senate office buildings adjacent to the U.S. Capitol to return to work. "I think at this point we can say we've found no confirmation of an active shooter and this may have been a bogus call," Manger said. About 200 officers were mobilized to clear the three Senate office buildings on Constitution Avenue. Manger said Washington's Metropolitan Police Department received a call reporting a shooter and tried to contact the initial caller without success. After the call, police urged people inside Senate office buildings to shelter in place.

Police and emergency personnel stand near the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, DC, on August 2, 2023, after unconfirmed reports of an active shooter in the building near the US Capitol. Police in Washington, D.C., said Wednesday that a report of an active shooter at a Senate office building "appears to be a bad call." U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger at a press conference later Wednesday seemed to agree. The U.S. Capitol Police issued a shelter-in-place order before 3 p.m. for people inside Senate office buildings while its officers responded to a report of a possible active shooter. The USCP had tweeted that its officers were searching in and around those buildings "in response to a concerning 911 call."

A New Recipe for a Very Old Hummus
  + stars: | 2023-07-30 | by ( Sam Sifton | More About Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
There’s some very nice writing about recipes in The New York Times Magazine this week, not surprisingly under the byline of Ligaya Mishan. Her subject is a hummus recipe (above), dating back to 13th century Syria, that Lucien Zayan of the Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn served at a dinner series he runs, la Salle A Manger. We don’t have a lot of recipes that are so old. In fact, Ligaya reports, there is no documentation of hummus recipes after the 14th century until the late 19th century. But hummus endured, as Ligaya explained beautifully: “A recipe existed only in the doing, the way that the ‘Odyssey’ once existed only in the telling, made new each time, revised, embellished, its glory subject to the seemingly boundless human capacity for error and its counterpart, invention.”Featured RecipeView Recipe →

This Hummus Holds Up After 800 Years

You take chickpeas, hard and dry, and boil them until their skins loosen and they reveal themselves, tender little hulks with souls of butter. For much of human civilization, recipes were rarely written down, and of those that were, almost none have survived. You might recognize this as hummus. Notably absent from the recipe is garlic, despite its ubiquity in the cooking of the Arab world at the time. It’s not certain exactly when garlic was introduced to the dish: Nasrallah notes that there is no documentation of hummus recipes after the 14th century until the late 19th century.

Across from a Pret a Manger near Union Square Park, Nicolette Barischoff held still as an artist painted an open blue eye across her sternum on Sunday. “It’s a very Zen experience,” she said, as photographers snapped pictures from behind police barricades. This year’s installment was the 10th — and the last, according to the event’s founder, Andy Golub, an artist. He said he was ending it to focus on other projects for his organization, Human Connection Arts. Nije Durdeen, 31, came from Philadelphia to model after learning she might not get another chance.

Soon after Starbucks' May launch of $3.33 milkshakes, designed to attract children, Third Wave launched its own range, a fifth cheaper at $2.71. He saw Starbucks' cheaper, small-sized drinks as a response to competition in "an incredibly price-sensitive market". The case for investing in India — a nation of 1.4 billion — is clear, and only bolstered by recent geopolitical shifts. As Western leaders look to boost economic cooperation with countries that share similar values, India, the world’s largest democracy, stands to gain. Arun Sankar/AFP/Getty ImagesIndia’s so-called “demographic dividend,” the potential economic growth arising from a large working-age population, represents a major opportunity. LONDON, April 26 (Reuters) - British sandwich and coffee chain Pret A Manger has raised the price of its monthly coffee subscription service by 20% to 30 pounds ($37.34) but expanded it to include a 10% reduction on everything sold in its shops. The group, commonly referred to as Pret, launched its coffee subscription service in September 2020, trying out a new business model to get it through the COVID-19 pandemic which hammered its sales. Pret, which trades from 439 UK shops, said on Wednesday the service was being rebranded to "Club Pret". Pret, owned by investment firm JAB and founder Sinclair Beecham, said the coffee subscription service has been "hugely successful".

The strike is the latest involving staff at Britain's state-funded National Health Service (NHS), following walkouts by nurses, paramedics and other workers demanding a pay rise that better reflects double-digit levels of inflation. "This is likely to be the most disruptive set of industrial action days that we've seen all winter," Powis told Times Radio. "We are working closely across the NHS to make sure that services are not affected in those emergency pathways," he said. Junior doctors in Britain are qualified physicians, often with several years of experience, who work under the guidance of senior doctors and represent almost half of the country's medical workforce.
UK doctors begin three-day strike in pay dispute

LONDON, March 13 (Reuters) - Thousands of junior doctors in England walked out on Monday in three-day strike that will disrupt patient care, as they protest over pay they say can work out at less per hour than a barista. Junior doctors in Britain are qualified physicians, often with several years of experience. Last month, 98% of the nearly 37,000 who took part in the BMA's strike ballot voted in favour. A Proud Boy wants to dismiss his seditious-conspiracy case based on Tucker Carlson's Jan. 6 footage. The DOJ responded on Sunday that all of the footage was already provided during discovery. Elon Musk previously suggested there was a miscarriage of justice by jailing the "QAnon Shaman." Chansley's former attorney, Albert Watkins, also said that he had not seen the footage aired on Carlson's show, The Washington Post reported. "In the weeks prior to the plea repeated requests were made to make sure we had all the video footage," Watkins wrote in an email.
Jimmy Kimmel made fun of Tucker Carlson and Fox News while hosting the Oscars on Sunday. He joked that good editing can even turn footage of a riot into a "sightseeing tour of the Capitol." Carlson appeared to use selectively edited clips to claim cops acted as "tour guides" on Jan. 6, 2021. "Edits can turn 44,000 hours of violent insurrection footage into a respectful sightseeing tour of the Capitol." Fox News and Carlson received bipartisan condemnation for their broadcast of previously unseen Capitol riot footage, with Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell describing it as "offensive and misleading."
An old video of Tucker Carlson from 2006 was posted to Twitter on Wednesday. The video shows Carlson warning about the dangers of conspiracy theories. "And in that environment, all sorts of crazy conspiracy theories bloom and take the place of facts." At the time of the 2006 panel discussion, Carlson was still a host on the MSNBC program "The Situation with Tucker Carlson." The sentiment expressed in the texts stands in stark contrast to Carlson's subsequent promoting of Trump's baseless voter-fraud conspiracy theories.
On Monday, Fox's right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson used some of the security videos, showing protesters walking through the Capitol, to argue that they were merely "sightseers". In a Senate speech, Schumer condemned the broadcast and urged the cable network to cancel any follow-up segment. He added that McCarthy was "every bit as culpable as Mr. Carlson" for providing the footage. "To say January 6 was not violent, is a lie, a lie, pure and simple," Schumer said. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell declined to comment on McCarthy's decision to supply the videos.
The White House lit into Tucker Carlson after he made misleading claims about January 6. The response shows the nerve Carlson has struck with his selectively edited footage of the riot. "Tucker Carlson is not credible," a White House spokesman said of the host. Bates then went after Carlson by name, poking fun at how the network has portrayed Carlson in past lawsuits. Outside of the White House, Carlson's comments and use of footage his show exclusively obtained from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has set off a torrent of criticism in Washington.
House Republicans have launched their first January 6-centric investigation of the 118th Congress. Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk is spearheading the latest oversight project. Loudermilk said he's interested in "following the facts, not a particular political narrative." Two years after the devastating attack on Congress, Republicans have been swept back into January 6-related news cycles by converging House priorities. House Administration staff did not immediately respond to requests for comment on how many submissions have come in so far.
