On Monday, Israel dramatically expanded its aerial assaults on Lebanon with airstrikes that killed nearly 500 people and wounded more than 1,600. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has warned of coming military strikes, but Israeli officials have not told U.S. officials whether or when a ground offensive could begin, the three defense officials said. The officials estimate a large offensive into southern Lebanon would take thousands more troops and armored vehicles, in addition to forces to hold any territory. In addition to tens of thousands of U.S. troops in the region, the Biden administration is considering options to send other military assets to the region. CNN —At least 22 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in an Israeli strike on a school compound Saturday, Palestinian officials said, with Israel saying it targeted Hamas fighters sheltering there. A spokesman for the Gaza Civil Defense, Mahmoud Basal, said the missile hit the Al-Zaytoun School, near Gaza City, where thousands were sheltering. The Government Media Office in Gaza said 13 children, including a 3-month-old infant were killed. CNN —At least 18 people, including United Nations staff, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a UN school-turned-shelter in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza on Wednesday, according to the Gaza Civil Defense and hospital officials. This is the fifth time that the school compound has been targeted since October 7, according to the UN agency and a Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson. CNN —Two people have been killed in a stabbing attack in the Israeli city of Holon, near Tel Aviv, medical officials have said. The two killed were a 66-year-old woman and an “approximately 80-year-old man,” medical officials said. A large police presence is at the scene conducting “extensive searches with a helicopter and other means,” a police spokesperson added. Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for Israelis to arm themselves following the attack. Palestinian officials told CNN that Israel did not give civilians any warning before the airstrikes occurred. A local journalist told CNN that the buildings, which were adjacent to each other, housed hundreds of displaced people, primarily women and children. Videos obtained by CNN from the area show extensive destruction and dead bodies in a schoolyard following the Israeli strike.
