But home prices are still on the rise, according to a November 28 note from Selma Hepp, the chief economist at CoreLogic. The outcome is that many remain renters, which drives up demand for rental property and the cost of rent. If the cost of rent is 20% below the price of owning a home monthly, then it may be comparable. Rent prices are based on listings from Rent.com. For example, take the cost of rent over five years; let's say it's $3,000 x 12 months = $36,000 annually.

Long-shot Biden challenger Phillips won't run again for House

REUTERS/Reba Saldanha/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 24 (Reuters) - U.S. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, a long-shot challenger to President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, on Friday said he would not run for reelection. The 54-year-old millionaire businessman and three-term congressman last month said he would run against Biden, seizing on the president's lackluster approval ratings and voter wariness over his age. The post linked to an interview in the Minnesota Star Tribune paper, in which he explained his move. Phillips, who first won his seat in 2018 and won reelection in 2020 and 2022, said it would be "unproductive and uncomfortable" to run again, given his nomination bid. Phillips is unlikely to affect Biden's chance of securing the party's nomination, given the incumbent's deep resources, official party support and reshaping of the party's nominating contest calendar to help fend off any early challengers.

The significant advantage to buyers is negotiating power, and if done right, it could help offset some of those higher mortgage rates. Fans have been tracking the young male moose for weeks and posting updates on a Facebook page that as of Tuesday had more than 18,000 followers. Todd Froberg, the agency's big game program coordinator, said the young moose is likely looking for home territory or other moose and is expected to continue moving north. “He’s lost, and he’s trying to get home to his family,” said Bernie Stang, a moose fan who spotted the animal in late October. She suspects Rutt traveled from North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa before coming back to Minnesota, based on news reports of moose sightings in South Dakota that match his description. Johnson said she created the Central MN Moose on the Loose Facebook page in 2018 to track another moose whose life tragically ended when it was fatally struck by a semi while crossing a highway.

U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives for a House Republican conference meeting to choose a nominee in the race for House Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., October 24, 2023. Emmer has been seen as a strong supporter of assisting Ukraine in it war with Russia. A "report card" by the conservative Defending Democracy Together's "Republicans for Ukraine" campaign gave Emmer an "A excellent" rating, based on his past votes. Jordan received an "F very poor" rating, as did Representative Mike Johnson, the last speaker candidate eliminated before Emmer became the nominee. Emmer has pushed back on this, pointing to his endorsements of Trump in 2016 and 2020, and adding that other Republican leaders have also not endorsed Trump yet, including former speaker nominee Steve Scalise and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives for a House Republican conference meeting to choose a nominee in the race for House Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, October 24, 2023. Rep. Tom Emmer is the latest Republican nominee for speaker of the House, and that could mean a fresh headache for the nation's largest business lobbying group. Emmer, like former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, is one of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's biggest critics among House Republicans. A lack of engagement with House Republican leadership, particularly the speaker, could mean that the Chamber will have little impact on future legislation. The Chamber has continued to support Republicans despite the criticism the group has received from House Republican leadership.

Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry of North Carolina said he wants the nominee to face a House vote as soon as Tuesday. His failure came after the party's original nominee, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, bowed out of the race because he could not secure enough GOP votes. Meuser said Monday whoever wins the nomination needs to ensure that speaker's office is inclusive so the narrow GOP majority remains unified. The Pennsylvania Republican told Fox Business that Republicans' failure to elect a speaker has made the party "part of the dysfunction of Washington." US House Of Representatives | via ReutersRep.
