Gold prices edged higher on Wednesday as attention turned to the Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy decision, with the U.S. central bank anticipated to implement a third rate cut this year and provide insights into its plans for 2025. Spot gold nudged 0.1% higher to $2,648.43 per ounce by 0237 GMT. U.S. retail sales increased more than expected in November, adding to warmer inflation readings in recent months and suggesting that the central bank could pause rate reduction in January. On the policy front, the Bank of Japan, Bank of England, Riksbank and Norges Bank are expected to deliver their policy verdicts later this week. Chile's central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 5.00% on Tuesday, extending an easing cycle that began last year.

Trump relishes wielding power without responsibility

“In this term, everybody wants to be my friend,” the president-elect said at his Mar-a-Lago resort Monday, relishing the outpouring of deference from foreign leaders, CEOs and Republican powerbrokers as he readies his second term. Since winning last month’s election, Trump has been far more visible than Joe Biden, and it would be easy to mistake him for the sitting president. Trump never looked quite as at ease or cheerful when he was saddled with the cares of the presidency. Trump’s unique chanceTrump is experiencing a chance that only one president in history — Grover Cleveland — has known: to start his second term from scratch. It seems unlikely, as the president-elect speculated in his freewheeling news conference in Florida, that “my personality changed or something.”Such turmoil is unlikely to erode the rock-solid loyalty of Trump’s political base.

Fourteen Democratic senators will introduce an amendment Monday evening to remove language from Congress’ massive defense spending bill that seeks to ban coverage of gender-affirming care for transgender children of servicemembers, the office of Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., told NBC News. I trust our servicemembers and their doctors to make the best healthcare decisions for their kids, not politicians,” Baldwin said in a statement. In a statement following the House vote last week, Johnson said the legislation prioritizes “military lethality, not radical woke ideology. A draft of a media release shared with NBC News — and scheduled to be made public Monday evening — from Baldwin’s office said that if the transgender health care provision survives, it could affect 6,000 to 7,000 children of U.S. servicemembers. CNN —Owen Wilson proved this weekend that he is the hype man we all need. The “Wedding Crashers” actor made an unexpected appearance during rapper Travis Scott’s rain-soaked set at Rolling Loud on Saturday, according to video footage from the Miami music festival. Wilson came on stage during Scott’s 2023 track “FE!N” and riled the crowd up when he exclaimed, “I’m feining for more!” to help kick off performing the song. While the Rolling Loud stage isn’t where you’d typically expect to find a comedic actor such as Wilson making a cameo, the appearance may not be quite as random as it seems.
