Suspects, including politicians from the 'Ndrangheta home region of Calabria, face charges including mafia association, murder, extortion, fraud, rigging of public contracts, bribery and vote buying, police said in a statement. Prosecutors from the German town of Stuttgart and the German federal police cooperated with the investigation, they added. The alleged 'Ndrangheta network ran illegal trades from the south to the north of Italy in real estate, catering, fruit and vegetable and livestock trading, security services and video-poker, Italian police said.

New calculations suggest that 1.7 billion T. rexes lived on Earth from 65.5-68 million years ago. This dichotomy between how many T. rexes lived and how few fossils we have of them shows us just how rare fossilization is and how much more we have to learn about these majestic creatures. Warpaintcobra/Getty ImagesMarshall was the lead author of an earlier study that estimated 2.5 billion T. rexes once roamed Earth. Of the roughly 1.7 billion, or so, T. rexes who roamed our planet, scientists have only uncovered a few hundred fossils, equating to fewer than 100 total dinosaurs. Despite their prime conditions for fossilization, if Giebeler's calculations are correct, scientists have only found about 0.0000002% of the T. rex that lived on Earth.
Bayern finished on 71 points, ahead on goal difference from Dortmund. RB Leipzig and sensational Union Berlin are third and fourth respectively and will also compete in the Champions League next season. "It is unbelievable that I experience such a title race," said Bayern's Thomas Mueller, who celebrated a league-record 12th Bundesliga title. While the title win rescues some silverware in what has been a frustrating season for Bayern, the club sacked CEO Oliver Kahn, who was not in Cologne, and sports director Hasan Salihamdizic minutes after the title win. Bundesliga set for thrilling final day title decider

In fact, the last season Bayern didn’t win the championship was the 2011/12 campaign, when now Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp guided Borussia Dortmund to the title. That leaves soccer fans looking to the Bundesliga for a dose of end-of-season drama with the championship set to be decided on the final day of the season. “We stopped moving, stopped helping, stopped showing courage.”Perhaps, Bayern had become complacent, suffering the shock loss despite taking a 25th-minute lead through Serge Gnabry. Former Chelsea and Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel took over at Bayern in March. Bayern travels to 10th-placed FC Köln on the final matchday hoping for a win and a surprise Dortmund slip up in what is set to be a tense final day.
Five years ago, a small group of cancer scientists meeting at a restaurant in a deconsecrated church hospital in Mainz, Germany, drew up an audacious plan: They would test their novel cancer vaccine against one of the most virulent forms of the disease, a cancer notorious for roaring back even in patients whose tumors had been removed. The vaccine might not stop those relapses, some of the scientists figured. And the speed with which the disease, pancreatic cancer, often recurred could work to the scientists’ advantage: For better or worse, they would find out soon whether the vaccine helped. The vaccine provoked an immune response in half of the patients treated, and those people showed no relapse of their cancer during the course of the study, a finding that outside experts described as extremely promising. The study, published in Nature, was a landmark in the yearslong movement to make cancer vaccines tailored to the tumors of individual patients.
LEVERKUSEN, Germany, May 5 (Reuters) - Bayer Leverkusen slumped to a 2-1 home loss to Cologne on Friday to end their 14-game unbeaten run across all competitions and put their European spot in danger with three Bundesliga matches remaining. Cologne's Davie Selke struck twice in the first half -- either side of Amine Adli's equaliser -- to give them their third straight away win, their longest winning run away from home in 31 years. Selke stunned the hosts in the 14th minute, easily beating defender Jonathan Tah to head in and give Cologne the lead with their first chance of the game. The hosts were in full control of the game when Cologne struck again as Selke stabbed in his second goal of the evening in the 36th minute against the run of play. Bayern Munich, in top spot on 62 points, face Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Factbox: The 'Ndrangheta: Italy's most powerful mafia group

May 3 (Reuters) - Italy's 'Ndrangheta has supplanted Sicily's Cosa Nostra as the country's most powerful mafia organisation, and has spread across Europe and the rest of the world. ORIGIN, CELEBRITY KIDNAPPING AND COCAINEThe 'Ndrangheta originates from Calabria, the impoverished southern region at the tip of Italy's boot. Its name is believed to come from the ancient Greek words "andros" and "agathos", meaning brave or valiant man. POWER AND WEALTHIn its latest six-monthly report, Italy's Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate (DIA) calls the 'Ndrangheta "the absolute dominant force in the criminal world" well beyond its home turf of Calabria. In 2008, Italian research group Eurispes valued the 'Ndrangheta's annual turnover at a staggering 44 billion euros ($48.54 billion), about 3% of Italy's gross domestic product at the time.

BERLIN, April 28 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich are playing catch-up to leaders Borussia Dortmund for the league title with five games remaining but coach Thomas Tuchel said the situation was not yet hopeless for his team and their shot at an 11th straight league crown. The Bavarians dropped to second place on 59, a point behind Dortmund, after last week's 3-1 loss to Mainz 05. "The situation has become more difficult for us now but it is not hopeless," Tuchel told a news conference. Hertha are in last place but have brought back former coach Pal Dardai in a last-ditch effort to avoid relegation. "I don't know if I will watch it," Tuchel said of the Dortmund game.
Leaders Dortmund ready to open up gap with win over Bochum

With second-placed Bayern Munich, a point behind on 59, in action at home to Hertha Berlin on Sunday, victory over Bochum would pile more pressure on Dortmund's embattled title rivals. Their last league title dates back to 2012. Dortmund coach Edin Terzic could be without defender Nico Schlotterbeck against Bochum while Raphael Guerreiro trained alone earlier this week. They are in 15th place on 27 points, just two points above the relegation playoff spot. Hertha are without a win in their last seven games and are anchored in last place on 22 points points.
BERLIN, April 27 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund have five more steps to take to lift their first Bundesliga title in 11 years, coach Edin Terzic said on Thursday, with his team ready for the season's crunch period. They visit VfL Bochum in the mini Ruhr derby on Friday while Bayern are in action at home to Hertha Berlin on Sunday. We have to take five more steps and the next one is tomorrow," Terzic told a news conference. We play tomorrow against Bochum and we can improve our situation tomorrow only if we bag the three points," he added. They also have to play VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Augsburg and Mainz 05.
Union squeeze past Gladbach 1-0 to hold on to third place

BERLIN, April 23 (Reuters) - Union Berlin secured a 1-0 victory at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Sunday courtesy of a sumptuous Sheraldo Becker volley to remain in third place and stay on course for a Champions League-qualifying spot with five matches remaining. Gladbach tried to bounce back but Marcus Thuram and Manu Kone could not beat goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow. Union stay third on 55 points with Borussia Dortmund leading the title race on 60. Bayern Munich dropped to second place with 59 following Saturday's 3-1 loss at Mainz 05. Freiburg moved up to fourth spot, two points behind Union, after their 4-0 demolition of Schalke 04 earlier on Sunday.
MAINZ, Germany, April 22 (Reuters) - League leaders Bayern Munich slumped to a 3-1 loss at Mainz 05 on Saturday, conceding all three goals in a span of 14 minutes in their latest slip-up which could prove costly in the race for the Bundesliga title with five games remaining. Bayern, chasing an 11th straight league crown, are on 59 points and second-placed Borussia Dortmund, on 57, can take over the lead with a win over Eintracht Frankfurt later on Saturday. "Too much has happened to this team and it struggles to bounce back when things don't go its way. We struggle to win matches. They now also risk missing out on the Bundesliga title after suffering a third defeat under Tuchel in seven matches.
DORTMUND, Germany, April 22 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund cruised past Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0, with two goals coming from Donyell Malen, on Saturday to take over the lead in the Bundesliga from Bayern Munich with five matches left in the season. For Frankfurt, last year's Europa League winners, it was their eighth league game without a win and they dropped to ninth, out of contention for a European spot. Jude Bellingham opened Dortmund's account in the 19th minute after picking up the ball at the edge of the box, turning on the spot and firing in. Their second goal, five minutes later, was far easier, with keeper Gregor Kobel kicking the ball deep in to the Frankfurt half and Malen slotting in after the ball was headed on twice past a clueless Frankfurt backline. Mats Hummels made it 3-0 with a well-timed header from a Raphael Guerreiro cross before Karim Adeyemi's solo effort set up Dutch striker Malen for his second goal of the evening in the 66th.
MUNICH, Germany, April 20 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich's players and coach Thomas Tuchel have no time to digest Wednesday's painful Champions League exit to Manchester City with the Bundesliga the only title left to fight for and in-form Mainz 05 posing the next obstacle in a rocky season. In the Cup it was Freiburg who beat them in Munich while City advanced with a comfortable 4-1 aggregate win. "At the end of the day, we are just scoring far too few goals," said midfielder Thomas Mueller. Bayern know that if they are to rescue their season with a record-extending 11th straight Bundesliga title and take some pressure off the club leadership they have to start scoring again on Saturday at Mainz. "This is now our main focus, not to dwell too long on this bitter elimination (by City)."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday authorized Pfizer's omicron booster shot for kids under five years old who were previously vaccinated with three doses of the company's original vaccine. The new shot is bivalent, meaning it targets the original Covid strain as well as omicron BA.4 and BA.5. Pfizer's primary series for young children consists of three doses, while rival drugmaker Moderna's primary series for that same age group is only two. Since December, children in that age group who completed two doses of Pfizer's original vaccine have been eligible to receive the omicron booster as their third shot, or last dose in their primary series. One month after the children received the omicron booster, they demonstrated an immune response to both the original Covid strain and omicron BA.5 and BA.5
The CDC study published Wednesday provides the first estimate of the omicron booster shots' real-world effectiveness against the XBB family of subvariants. Some scientists have warned the XBB subvariants could cause another Covid wave because they are so good at evading the antibodies that block infections. The study compared people who received the new booster with those who received between two and four doses of the original vaccine. People who only received the original shots generally got their last dose about 13 months ago. But the CDC study found that the omicron boosters provide about as much protection against the XBB family as they do against the BA.5 subvariant and its descendants such as BQ.1 and BQ.1.1.
MAINZ, Germany — A 97-year-old woman who worked as a secretary at a Nazi concentration camp was convicted by a German court Tuesday of being an accessory to the murder of more than 10,000 people. In what could be the last trial of its kind, Irmgard Furchner — dubbed the ‘secretary of evil’ by German media — was handed a two-year suspended sentence for helping the Stutthof concentration camp to function during World War Two. That's in line with what prosecutors had sought, while survivors of the death camp and relatives of victims who appeared as joint plaintiffs also said that it was not in their interest for the 97-year-old to serve any time in prison. Furchner was charged with “aiding those in a position of responsibility at the former Stutthof concentration camp with the systematic killing of those imprisoned there, due to her work as a shorthand typist/secretary in the Camp Commandant’s Office between June 1943 and April 1945,” according to a court press release. In Germany proof of intent is required for criminal liability.
MAINZ, Germany — Authorities in Germany arrested 25 people on Wednesday who are suspected of planning to violently overthrow the government in a far-right extremist plot. It is centered on the so-called Reichsbürger, or Reich Citizens, movement which is motivated by conspiracy theories about the role and legitimacy of the modern German state. The homes of a further 27 people suspected of being members or supporters of the group have been searched. The German armed forces have been beset by a series of scandals involving personnel belonging to far-right groups. German prosecutors note, however, that there is no evidence Russian officials reacted positively to the request.
Covid shots designed to protect against the omicron variant trigger a weaker immune response against the rapidly emerging BQ.1.1 subvariant than the previously dominant strain, according to a new lab study. Scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch, in a study published online Tuesday in Nature Medicine, found that the booster shots performed well against the BA.5 subvariant they were designed to target. People with a prior history of infection who received an omicron booster, however, had a stronger response to BQ.1.1. Omicron BQ.1.1 subvariant appears on track to become the dominant variant in the U.S. Omicron BA.5, on the other hand, now represents about 14% of new infections.
Pfizer said its omicron booster triggers a stronger immune response against a number of emerging Covid subvariants circulating the U.S. Pfizer developed its booster against omicron BA.5 at the request of the Food and Drug Administration. Among the emerging subvariants, the omicron booster elicited the strongest immune response against BA.4.6 with antibodies 11 times higher, and the weakest response against XBB.1 with antibodies about 5 times higher. Moderna on Monday said its omicron booster induces an immune response against BQ.1.1 though the company didn't provide specifics. Pfizer and Moderna's new boosters target both omicron BA.5 and the original strain of Covid that emerged in Wuhan, China in 2019.
