In a historic commencement address at Howard University on June 4, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson laid out the intellectual and moral basis for affirmative action. Affirmative action offered a way to take into account far-reaching differences in personal circumstances and to begin to right a historic wrong. After a brief honeymoon of public support, affirmative action was met with a powerful backlash, and the policy has been under attack ever since. The intensity and duration of the attack is sad confirmation that many Americans remain unwilling to reckon with the barbarity of our racial history. In response to Reconstruction, Southern white people developed an entirely new and mythical history of slavery, the Civil War and ultimately Reconstruction.

But all the deals and pomp of the visit — including an address to Congress and a lavish state dinner — may not have accomplished what the White House had wanted. U.S. leaders gave Modi a hearty welcome, as Washington seeks to nudge India further into the American sphere of influence. “The partnership is among the most consequential in the world,” Biden said at a news conference on Thursday. Biden and Modi largely brushed off criticism of the Indian government’s crackdown on human rights and religious freedom. And Modi made no pledges to endorse U.S. efforts to restrain China, nor to cut ties to Russia.

Believing in yourself has immeasurable value, says Anne Wojcicki. "It's helpful for people to realize the world is often wrong," she tells CNBC Make It. "When you're swimming upstream, it's hard and you're going to have people telling you it's a bad idea or you're not capable," Anne says. Many of those close relationships remain: Anne says she and her two sisters all still "have the same friends from early elementary school." 1 best piece of advice for regular investors, do's and don'ts, and three key investing principles into a clear and simple guidebook.
"Myself and the team really did a lot of introspection," Sass recalled, in an interview with CNBC. Sass Concentrated Value portfolio, which the younger Sass manages. By limiting the number of stocks, Sass said he can do extensive due diligence and research into each of the companies it owns. The goal is to find value in underappreciated companies that are in the midst of a transformation that will accelerate growth and ultimately lead to a boost in a stock's value. 'Digging under rocks' To place his bets, you won't see Sass looking strictly at a stock's price-to-earnings multiple.
And while the verdict is only partially in as to whether they actually reduce eye strain, there is research to suggest that certain blue-light-blocking glasses may help with sleep. That’s where blue light glasses come in. A study published in 2022 looked at 50 pairs of blue-light-blocking glasses (some of which are featured in our picks below). On the other hand, the lighter color means they don’t distort your color perception the way some blue glasses do. The blue-light-blocking glasses that actually filter out blue light do so by absorbing the blue wavelength light to stop it from ever reaching your eyes.

Topical antiseptics such as hydrogen peroxide, iodine, or a combination of the two are not safe to inhale and not proven to treat respiratory infections, contrary to social media claims that breathing in these liquids is a good idea. Still, social media users are sharing a video that claims using a nebulizer to make a vapor from a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and iodine can treat respiratory infections like sore throat. Both hydrogen peroxide and iodine solutions are used on the skin, usually to prevent infection of minor cuts and scrapes (here). Evidence from studies of accidental inhalation shows that hydrogen peroxide can damage tissue and iodine can be toxic. There is no evidence that combining hydrogen peroxide and iodine in a nebulizer will treat respiratory symptoms, and the practice is potentially damaging and toxic, experts told Reuters.

The subvariant of omicron, named XBB.1.5, has raised concerns about another potential wave of Covid cases following the busy holiday travel season. The CDC projected Friday that about 40% of confirmed U.S. Covid cases are caused by the XBB.1.5 strain, up from 20% a week ago. There’s no indication it causes more severe illness than any other omicron virus, Dr. Barbara Mahon, director of CDC’s Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, told NBC News. The XBB.1.5 is a relative of the omicron XBB variant, which is a recombinant of the omicron BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 subvariants. Yet, only 37.5% of that age group has received the most recent omicron booster, according to the most recent CDC data.
With the busy holiday travel season approaching and a comparatively low percentage of adults vaccinated for the flu, that leaves millions at potential risk for severe complications. Bacterial pneumonia may develop when the flu virus spreads to the lower respiratory tract, leading to breathing difficulties that may require supplemental oxygen. "Unfortunately, we do sometimes see young healthy people presenting with really severe pneumonia as well," Grein said. A recent CDC survey found that only half of all pregnant women got their flu vaccines as recommended, leaving many at risk for severe disease from the flu. The current vaccine protects against four strains: two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains.

Florida’s state medical boards voted Friday afternoon to approve the language of a first-of-its-kind rule banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors who don’t already receive it. The rule updates the medical standards of practice in the state to mostly prohibit health care professionals from starting treatment for gender dysphoria in those younger than 18. Gender dysphoria refers the stress and discomfort some experience when their gender identity doesn’t match their sex assigned at birth. The measure bans the prescription of puberty blockers or hormone therapy to new patients who are minors, and it forbids gender-affirming surgeries. In a statement Friday, Equality Florida said once the rule goes into effect, it will be the only ban in the country of gender-affirming care for minors instituted by a state medical board.

It’s the first time in 50 years that a federal grant has been given to study a psychedelic drug as a possible treatment. The study, a randomized controlled trial expected to start later this year, will investigate whether psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in “magic mushrooms,” can help people quit smoking tobacco. Hopkins researchers will lead the trial, which will be done in collaboration with researchers at NYU Langone Health and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In a study published in August, researchers found that psilocybin helped drinkers reduce alcohol cravings. Typically in studies using psychedelics, participants receive the drug during a monitored session with a therapist, which can last hours.
