PARIS, July 19 (Reuters) - An ongoing energy crisis and an economic downturn is expected to slow global power demand growth in 2023, but a probable rebound in 2024 means more renewable capacity needs to be developed, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Wednesday. For 2024, the rate is expected to rise to 3.3%, as the economic outlook improves, the IEA data showed. The Paris-based agency predicted renewable energy would cover the expected growth this year and next and power from renewable sources would exceed one third of the total global power supply for the first time next year. In the first half this year, the EU recorded a 6% decline in power demand as energy-intensive industries, including aluminum, steel, paper, and chemical industries, cut their use in response to high prices. Increased use of cooling to cope with summer heatwaves is expected to drive the demand growth there this year.

Advertisers are eagerly watching how Meta's new Threads messaging app develops over the next few months as they look for a new social channel to reach consumers while Twitter continues to struggle. Meta is currently more focused on building the core Threads product as opposed to monetizing the app, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has said in various interviews and a post on Threads. "It's the most instant onboarding experience I've ever experienced in the history of my career, and my entire career has been in social," Tipograph said. Although it was easy for current Instagram users to create Threads accounts, he said, it's unclear how active they will be on the service. Since Threads is so new, it's unclear which kind of audience Threads is attracting, Tipograph said.

Mark Zuckerberg's Threads is probably the app best poised to take down Elon Musk's Twitter. The door's now open for two billion people to start threading their thoughts in a place that's not Twitter. Meta's slated to debut its new rival to Twitter — an app called Threads — on July 6. Threads' main advantage is probably the number of people already using Instagram, or a reported two billion monthly active users in 2021. Meta's chief product officer, Chris Cox, has called Threads a response to creators and public figures who wanted a platform that's "sanely run."
