Rep. Nancy Mace brought her dog, Libby, to work on the third day of House Speaker voting. Mace shared a video of the dog running around her office before heated discussions began. Mace, a South Carolina Representative, cast her vote to adjourn with one hand while holding her dog in the other. Earlier on Thursday, the lawmaker shared a video of Libby running around her office, with the caption "Day 3 vibes." Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) January 5, 2023When asked if dogs were allowed on the House floor, Mace replied "there are no rules right now," The Independent reported.
Rep.-elect George Santos moved into his new Capitol Hill office, surprising his next door neighbors. "I was like, 'Why is there a press stakeout right outside our office?'" Then he turned a corner and saw a press stakeout with more than a dozen reporters and two cameras. "I was like, 'Why is there a press stakeout right outside our office? Sure, there's times when you may not want a huge stakeout outside your doors, Fritschner said, but Hill staffers are like anyone else.
While the majority party has elected their nominee on the first ballot over the past century, this year could be different. Members vote "viva voice," meaning they stand when their names are called by a reading clerk and verbally announce who they are voting for. Members can vote for anyone (even people who are not members of the House), vote present, or not vote at all. If every member doesn't show up, or if some vote present instead of supporting a candidate, that decreases what the majority vote needs to be. Political parties are much stronger now than they were then, when House members were often more loyal to their region.
Control of Congress was once so close, Republicans lost power before they ever met in Washington DC. Fourteen representatives-elect died after election day in 1931 and before the start of the new term. The special elections largely went to Democrats, flipping control of the House before the start of the term. Similarly, the 1930 election followed another major economic event: The 1929 stock market crash. With each new special election that took place, the country plunged further into a Depression, giving Democrats an edge to win their races.
House Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) departs a leadership election meeting with the Democratic caucus in the Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill November 30, 2022 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON — House Democrats elected their new leadership team Wednesday, ushering in a younger generation of leaders after Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer decided to step aside after Democrats narrowly lost the majority this month. Jeffries' top deputy will be Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., 59, a progressive who served under Jeffries as vice chair of the Democratic Caucus and rose to assistant speaker this Congress. Rounding out the trio of new leaders is Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., 43, a Congressional Hispanic Caucus member and former mayor who was elected Democratic Caucus chairman — the role Jeffries has held for the past four years. Of the current "Big Three" Democrats, only Clyburn, the current majority whip, has opted to stay in leadership in the new Congress.
Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is struggling to secure the 218 votes he needs to be elected speaker of the House in January. In this game of chicken, if the conservatives don’t blink and McCarthy refuses to back down, it could result in a chaotic floor fight with House members taking multiple votes for speaker — something that has not happened in a century. The House was called to order at noon and the chamber moved to the first order of business: electing the speaker. The House held three more unsuccessful votes for speaker that day before adjourning just after 2 p.m. The date was Feb. 2, 1856, two months after the first speaker vote.
WASHINGTON — “Here Comes the Bride” will be heard at the White House very soon. Stewart McLaurin, president of the historical association, said special occasions at the White House aren’t soon forgotten. “It’s like being part of the American fabric.”A White House wedding is no guarantee of a lasting marriage. Lynda Johnson Robb said she never thought about a White House wedding, but circumstances practically dictated that she and Marine Capt. Red is her signature color and December nuptials meant the White House was already decorated for Christmas.
Sen. Ed Markey demanded answers from Twitter owner Elon Musk about its new verification and impersonation policies Friday after a Washington Post reporter successfully set up a fake verified account pretending to be the Massachusetts Democrat. Twitter appeared to have paused the $7.99/month Twitter Blue verification program shortly after the Post ran its test as impersonations of celebrities and brands proliferated across the platform. The account received a blue verified checkmark, even though Markey already has two legitimate verified accounts. Even though the blue check is supposed to be a feature of the paid Twitter Blue, the Post reporter found that Twitter said the fake Markey account was verified "because it's notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category." "Safeguards such as Twitter's blue checkmark once allowed users to be smart, critical consumers of news and information in Twitter's global town square," Markey wrote in his letter to Musk.
"I now expect the language of free markets and libertarianism to be consigned to scrap for quite some time. Truss had spent her summer campaign for the party leadership complaining about Britain's weak economic growth, productivity and low pay since the 2008 global financial crisis. Her solution was to challenge economic "orthodoxy" and demand faster, radical action to shake the economy out of its torpor. The Institute of Economic Affairs said of the economic plan: "This isn't a trickle-down budget – it's a boost-up budget." The next month, he was named deputy director, the highest-ranking official under FBI Director Christopher Wray. But sources close to the investigation have told NBC News that there have been some special agents in the country who have resisted Jan. 6 cases. Many special agents have been very proactive, while others in various field offices have engaged in half-hearted investigative efforts and seem content to let things peter out, the sources said. After receiving support from 30 former FBI special agents, Friend joined Trump’s Truth Social platform this week, where he was welcomed by Kyle Seraphin, another suspended FBI special agent who joined Truth Social and did an interview with conservative firebrand Dan Bongino after his suspension. A tip the FBI received about the Proud Boys ahead of Jan. 6, highlighted by the committee, was even starker.
