Over the weekend, Disney and Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" became only the second R-rated film to top $1 billion at the global box office. "Deadpool & Wolverine" is the first R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe flick, as the previous two Deadpool films were produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is also the second Disney film to top $1 billion at the global box office this year. Box office analysts expect "Deadpool & Wolverine" won't be the last for the company this year, either. The Toy Story franchise has generated $3.2 billion at the global box office, the two Frozen films surpassed $2.7 billion worldwide, the two Incredibles films tallied $1.8 billion globally, and "Zootopia" reached $1 billion worldwide during its run in 2016.

New York CNN —Paramount Global, the storied media conglomerate, announced Thursday it will lay off 15% of its US staff and write down $6 billion in value of its cable television networks as it prepares to merge with Skydance Media. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, TNT, HGTV and other cable networks, posted a $9.1 billion write down on its television business. “And this impairment acknowledges this.”The recent turbulence in the media business extends well beyond the traditional television industry, affecting digital news outlets and print publications. As profits in the television business have eroded away, Paramount has been hit particularly hard. Paramount said its streaming service Paramount+ posted a $26 million profit after losing $424 million during the same period last year and said it expects subscriber growth in the second half of the year.

New York CNN —“Deadpool & Wolverine” barreled through the $200 million benchmark, cementing the blockbuster as the record holder for the highest grossing opening weekend for an R-rated movie. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is now also among the top opening weekends ever, ranking at No. Could “Deadpool & Wolverine” reinvigorate the franchise? But less than three weeks after its release, the year-over-year domestic box office revenue deficit shrunk from 27% to 19%. Now, the deficit stands at 16.9% and it could keep shrinking depending on how “Deadpool & Wolverine” finishes its run in theaters.

On Tuesday, "Inside Out 2" surpassed $1.46 billion in global ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing animated feature of all time, usurping another Disney title, "Frozen II." The record-breaking box office for "Inside Out 2" comes after a series of theatrical hits and misses from the company, especially from its animated releases. In particular, Pixar has suffered at the box office in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Of note, Disney does not consider its 2019 "The Lion King" to be an animated feature despite nearly the entire film being computer animated. Otherwise, it would be the highest-grossing animated feature, as it collected more than $1.6 billion during its theatrical run.

The Netflix logo is displayed above its corporate offices on January 24, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Netflix reports its second-quarter earnings after the bell on Thursday, and Wall Street will be paying close attention to any details or progress the streamer will provide about its advertising-supported business model. The streaming giant launched its ad-supported tier in late 2022 and has slowly released details and metrics on how the business has been performing. Netflix's stock has been uplifted in recent quarters by its push to gain subscribers on its cheaper, ad-supported tier, in addition to its crackdown on password sharing. However, the note emphasizes that although Netflix has a big lead ahead of its competitors when it comes to the streaming business, that pivot "is far from complete."

While the media and entertainment landscape around Netflix is in a state of change, the world's largest streamer is fine with the status quo. "Because when we delight people with our entertainment, Netflix can drive higher engagement, revenue and profit than the competition. This in turn creates a more loved and valued entertainment company — for our members, creators and shareholders — that we can strengthen and grow over time." But rather than worry about YouTube's competition, Netflix is content to focus on the other 80% of the TV market, the company reiterated. Netflix's focus remains building its advertising business and adding streaming subscribers on the back of its strength of content.

Both companies made a splash at this year's upfront presentations, where streamers make their pitches for the nearly $70 billion in annual TV ad spending and advertisers seek to lock down the bulk of their annual TV ad commitments. But among newer streamers, it's Amazon that's winning advertisers' wallets, several ad buyers told Business Insider. AdvertisementAmazon's big increase in ad inventory and lower ad prices, of about half the ad rate ($30 per 1,000 impressions) that Netflix sought when it launched its ad tier in 2022, put pressure on other TV ad sellers to lower their prices. A second ad-holding-company exec said they expected Amazon to be the third or fourth biggest TV ad seller in the upfronts, behind traditional TV stalwarts NBCUniversal and Disney and potentially YouTube. Data has shown that people watch three times as much Netflix as they do Prime Video, although Prime Video viewing is growing.

New York CNN —“Inside Out 2” has become the fastest-ever animated film to surpass $1 billion globally, shooting past the box office milestone this weekend, just 19 days after its release. “The film’s remarkable success is a testament not only to the incredible creativity of the Pixar team but an example of moviegoing at its very best.”The resounding success of “Inside Out 2” has jolted a sluggish 2024 box office. The movie is the highest grossing film of the year, and the first to pass $1 billion since “Barbie,” which came out last July. Daniel Loria, editorial director at Box Office Pro, which collects sales and showtime data from thousands of movie theaters across the United States, projects this year will see an overall domestic box office total between $8.1 billion and $8.4 billion, down from 2023’s total of more than $9 billion, the highest since the pandemic. For Goldman Sachs' investment bankers, the answer may just be over the horizon. Top Goldman executives told Business Insider that the investment bank is poised to roll out a series of generative AI tools to its workforce as soon as next year. Lee, a Goldman partner, said it could take years for the consequences of this tech on the bank's workflows to be fully understood. But he is overall optimistic about how generative AI, an advanced type of machine learning, will impact its workforce. Many junior bankers spend time on tasks that can sometimes feel "relatively routine," Lee said.
