Oct 2 (Reuters) - Russian technology company Astra on Monday said it was planning to list its shares on Moscow Exchange this month in an initial public offering (IPO), potentially breathing some life into Russia's moribund equity capital markets. Electric scooter firm Whoosh (WUSH.MM) was the only Russian firm to hold an IPO last year, but its debut raised less than half its initial target and relied heavily on Russian retail investors for capital. Astra dominates Russia's operating system (OS) market with its Astra Linux software. Alfa Bank analysts valued Astra, which more than doubled its core earnings year on year to 5.4 billion roubles in 2022, at around 70 billion-90 billion roubles ($707 million-$909 million) in a report published on Monday. Also on Monday, spirits producer Kristall said it was hoping to raise 1.5 billion roubles in a fourth quarter IPO on Moscow Exchange, something it said would significantly accelerate growth.

ChatGPT excelled at predicting a stock's price direction based on news sentiment. They found that while ChatGPT excelled at predicting a stock's direction based on news sentiment, it is not without limitations. They prompted ChatGPT to assign the following scores to headlines: "1" for good news, "0" for unknown and "-1" for bad news. Is this headline good or bad for the stock price of (company name) in the term (short or long-term)?" This meant negative news had a greater and longer impact in the real world than in the simulation,, likely giving ChatGPT an advantage, Lopez-Lira noted.

IBM's Red Hat has caused an uproar in the Linux community with its latest attempt to squash competitors like Oracle that offer clones of its flagship Red Hat Enterprise Linux software. Oracle has also offered its own version of RHEL called Oracle Linux since 2006, and Oracle and Red Hat have had an antagonistic relationship ever since. And, because that new, you-shall-not-share provision violates the spirit of open source (and some question if it also violates open source licenses), there was a predictable backlash from open source advocates. The core of it — known as the kernel — is built by the Linux Foundation, a non-profit that is separate from Red Hat (although Red Hat supports the foundation). On Monday, Edward Screven, Oracle's top engineering leader, published a blog post with head of Oracle Linux development Wim Coekaerts slamming IBM.

HONG KONG, July 6 (Reuters) - China has released its first homegrown open-source desktop operating system, named OpenKylin, state media said, as the country steps up efforts to cut reliance on U.S. technology. China's massive market for operating systems was worth 15.5 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) last year, state media said, citing an industry report. Developing an operating system independent of U.S. technology has been an important goal for China's tech industry in recent years, with many companies and organisations having contributed to the development of the OpenKylin system. More than a dozen Chinese companies are trying to develop operating systems that could replace Microsoft's Windows and Apple's MacOS operating systems. One such company, UnionTech Software Technology Co Ltd, has been developing what it calls the "Unity operating system".

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella arrives to court in San Francisco on June 28, 2023. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Wednesday that he would like to eliminate exclusive arrangements between video games and popular gaming consoles. Microsoft employs the strategy as well for its Xbox, though Nadella said his company is a "low share player in the console market." Regarding exclusive deals, Nadella said "I have no love for that world." The FTC is worried that the tie-up could allow Microsoft to withhold popular games in Activision's library from other consoles or degrade service for those games elsewhere.

Herrod, the former CTO of VMWare, will build enterprise startups in areas like AI and cybersecurity. Herrod is joining the venture studio Juxtapose, where he will focus on creating enterprise software startups, he told Insider exclusively. Though Juxtapose's portfolio includes a range of industries such as fintech, insurance, and healthtech, the firm hasn't had a long reach within enterprise software. He told Insider he sees ample opportunity within segments such as cybersecurity, open-source software, software supply-chain management, and artificial intelligence — several of which are receiving a hefty amount of attention from VCs right now. Now the venture world is full of former tech executives who have made the switch to backing startups.

It has been reported that more than 200.000 new users flocked the social media app after the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk. One of the fastest growing alternatives is Mastodon, which looks and feels a lot like Twitter. In the 12 days after Musk bought Twitter, Mastodon app downloads on Apple App Store and Google Play for Android surged more than 100 times previous rates to 322,000 installs during the period, according to analysis by Sensor Tower, an app analytics firm. That's still a lot lower than the over 245 million daily active users of Twitter that CEO Elon Musk tweeted about this week. Davide Bonaldo | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesBecause anyone can set up their own Mastodon server, there's no central place to sign up like twitter.com.
When the COVID-19 pandemic forced Argentinian energy company Ecogas to suspend in-person services for its 1.4 million natural gas customers spread across a distribution network of almost 30,000 kilometers, the company had to act fast to prepare for a surge in demand for its digital channels. Before the pandemic, in-person transactions were the primary touchpoints for energy customers in Argentina. However, Ecogas knew that digital channels could transform the customer experience, so they began a transformation to deliver seamless online and mobile service channels that allow customers to manage their accounts and pay bills. With in-person services suddenly inaccessible, digital channels became the primary customer touchpoint almost overnight. In fact, around 80% of our customers find the online and mobile channels so convenient that they prefer them to the in-branch experience."
Soumith Chintala is a creator and the lead of Facebook's core machine learning tool, PyTorch. Some of today's most popular emerging AI tools, such as OpenAI's text generation tool GPT-3, were made possible by an AI technique called Transformers. And in an industry where machine learning tools and techniques are evolving at a blistering pace, a half-decade might as well be half a century. Nvidia has traditionally held a dominant position thanks to the widespread adoption of GPUs in machine learning. JAX excels at splitting complex machine learning tasks across multiple pieces of hardware, drastically simplifying the unwieldy existing tools and making it easier to manage increasingly large machine learning problems.
