Accidents are all too common, and often deadly, says Sam Mayall, a lifelong sailor and former maritime transport deck officer. “A lot of the technologies employed offshore now are the same technologies that have been there for the last 40 or 50 years,” says Mayall. Spotting people is just one part of search and rescue — getting them out of the water rapidly is also critical. Zelim’s “Swift” conveyor belt is adapted to the maritime environment to get people out of the water quickly. The maritime industry is slow to innovate, says Phillips, and the industry-standard rescue winches have been the same for decades.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Last week, as Israel continued its military response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack, its political goals — and potential endgame — remained a source of huge controversy. On a mid-October Monday, shortly before 9 a.m., 179 elite puzzlers made their way into the ballroom of a Toronto hotel and found their allocated seats for the World Sudoku and Puzzle Championships. Quiet descended as proctors distributed booklets for Round 1: nine Sudoku puzzles, with a 45-minute time limit. He is a three-time world Sudoku champion, and in 2018 he won the title of world puzzle champion, making him the first person to win both honors. The annual championship event comprises two days of Sudoku, followed by three days of other types of pencil-and-paper logic puzzles. There were also trickier variants, such as “Difference Sudoku,” for which the standard rules apply, but also each number shown in a circle between two adjacent cells indicates the difference of the numbers in those two cells.

Officials say the public can also play a critical role in this effort. A perverse byproduct of the rise in mass shootings is that it’s given investigators more and more useful information with which to draw a portrait of the typical killer. Gibson firmly believes some mass shootings can be prevented because mass shooters often follow a predictable pattern. While most mass shooters do not suffer from serious psychiatric illness, they can be troubled or distressed in some way. Ultimately, what makes the US so exceptional when it comes to mass shootings is how pervasive guns are.

In an order made public on Friday, U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain in Manhattan federal court denied Tournant's motion to dismiss the five-count indictment, which also includes an obstruction charge. Tournant said dismissing the indictment was justified because prosecutors' "intrusion" into his attorney-client relationship had been "manifestly and avowedly corrupt." Two other former portfolio managers have pleaded guilty in the case and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. The case is U.S. v. Last week, the Manhattan U.S. attorney, Damian Williams, called for an outside authority to take control of the jails, saying that “after eight years of trying every tool in the tool kit we cannot wait any longer for substantial progress to materialize.” And the federal judge who appointed the monitor as part of a civil rights case against the jails, Laura Taylor Swain, has recently signaled a deep frustration with the city’s Correction Department. For his part, Mr. Molina and his staff members have touted progress, pointing to department statistics that show a decrease in deaths, as well as in slashings and stabbings. But the creation of the new, tight-lipped investigative group — known as the special investigations unit — and other moves emanating from the commissioner’s office have called into question whether such statements can be trusted, records and interviews show. While there is nothing inherently wrong with a commissioner changing the structure of the units within the department, former correction officials say, the new unit’s refusal to divulge details of one violent incident has hampered the work of the monitor and other watchdog groups. The unit that is now being criticized was created on the same day in April that the federal monitor, Steve J. Martin, filed a report with the court praising the department’s willingness to take steps toward reform.

Mr. Williams’s office said it would also seek to have the city held in contempt of court “to address the ongoing risk of harm” to detainees and jails staff. Ultimately it will fall to a judge, Laura Taylor Swain, to decide whether a takeover is necessary. Any finding from the judge that the city is unable to manage its own jails could be deeply embarrassing to Mr. Adams and his administration. The following year, Mayor Adams assumed office and appointed a new jails commissioner, Louis A. Molina, who vowed to get things under control. Still, 19 people died while being held in city jails in 2022, or directly after they were released, the most in nearly a decade.

But violence and chaos have continued at Rikers Island and, this year, Mr. Molina and New York City’s mayor Eric Adams have limited public information about conditions inside. They have stopped informing news outlets when deaths occur and have made it difficult for a city watchdog to access video and other information from Rikers Island. In April 2022, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan raised the prospect of a federal takeover of Rikers Island, through an official known as a receiver. If Mr. Martin has lost confidence in Mr. Molina, it could signal a shift in the attitude of the federal judge overseeing his work. Mr. Martin’s latest report, filed Monday, suggests that his goal is more modest: To get timely, accurate information about deaths and other serious incidents on Rikers Island.

BHP taps Microsoft, AI, to improve recovery at top copper mine
  + stars: | 2023-05-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
MELBOURNE, May 30 (Reuters) - BHP Group (BHP.AX) has teamed up with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) to improve copper recovery from its Escondida mine in Chile, the world's biggest copper mine, by using machine learning and artificial intelligence, it said on Tuesday. BHP estimates the world needs to double the amount of copper produced over the next 30 years to keep pace with the development of decarbonisation technology such as electric vehicles, offshore wind and solar farms. "We expect the next big wave in mining to come from the advanced use of digital technologies" BHP Chief Technical Officer Laura Tyler said in the company statement. Using real-time data from plants that process ore in combination with AI-based recommendations from Microsoft’s Azure platform, plant operators will have the ability to adjust variables that affect ore processing and grade recovery, BHP said. BHP, the world's biggest miner, is the majority owner of Escondida and operates the mine with partners Rio Tinto (RIO.AX), and Japan's JECO Corp. Escondida produced more than 1 million tonnes of copper during the last financial year ending in June.
It was about 1,100 feet off a dirt road. We took pine branches and put them under the tires to give them some grip, but it didn’t work. I had to call an excavator because we were so far off the road that a regular tow truck couldn’t reach us. The excavator actually drove a backhoe from his farm down the dirt road to find us. And they didn’t buy the property, so all of that trouble didn’t result in a sale.

LONDON, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Britain said on Monday it will launch a public consultation on new rules requiring higher disclosure standards from private pensions schemes to give savers better value for money and prevent providers from "gaming the system". Pensions minister Laura Trott said the shake-up of private pensions will also include reform of the charge cap on a company's "default" defined contribution (DC) pension schemes that employees are offered or auto-enrolled in. DC pension schemes' performance is tied to swings in stock and bond markets. "Being in an underperforming pension scheme can lead to someone missing out on thousands of pounds." They would have to provide comparisons with at least three other schemes to prevent providers from choosing underperforming schemes for comparison purposes.

Police arrested three Connecticut adults last week and charged each of them with more than 100 counts of animal cruelty after they were found hoarding what authorities estimate were more than 200 cats. A dozen cats had to be taken for emergency vet care, NBC Connecticut reported at the time, adding that most also had fleas. Through a subsequent investigation, authorities proved the family owned at least 106 of the cats, using records from veterinarians and statements from the family, Fitzgerald said. The cats have since been distributed to shelters throughout the state, and some have been adopted, according to Fitzgerald. The house where they were found has since been condemned, NBC Connecticut reported.
