The second day of the Republican National Convention will feature remarks from a bevy of Republican lawmakers and other prominent political figures, including multiple former Trump campaign rivals. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential primary and was recently a finalist to be his running mate, is set to speak. Also on the schedule: Trump's former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who challenged Trump in the 2024 GOP primary and did not immediately endorse him when she ended her presidential campaign. Haley said in an exit speech that Trump would have to "earn the votes" of Republicans who did not back him. CNN —Top advisers to Donald Trump are plotting an overhaul of the Republican Party platform that will dramatically slash its size and refocus the GOP around the former president’s agenda for a second term. A memo from Trump campaign managers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles dated Thursday criticized past platforms as too long and too heavily influenced by special interests and outside groups. A “clear, concise and easily digestible” platform will be easier for voters to understand and harder for political opponents to attack, they wrote. CNN —Anti-abortion leaders are warning Republicans not to remove a federal abortion ban from the party’s platform at next month’s GOP convention even as their presumptive nominee, Donald Trump, backs away from it. “Our expectation is that the GOP platform will continue to unequivocally call for national protections for unborn children, rooted in the 14th Amendment,” Dannenfelser told CNN in a statement. CNN has asked Trump’s campaign for comment. Trump would not be the first Republican presidential nominee to appear at odds with the party platform on abortion. Four days after presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump was convicted on 34 counts in his hush money trial in New York, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter will be called to answer for federal gun charges in Wilmington, Delaware. But a CBS/YouGov poll released Sunday showed that Americans believe 57% to 43% that the Manhattan jury reached the right verdict. His inflammatory remarks did not reflect the fact that his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss and his demagoguery are far more reflective of developing-world banana republics than a fair jury trial.
