Reuters —Rare images of the Mashco Piro, an uncontacted indigenous tribe in the remote Peruvian Amazon, were published on Tuesday by Survival International, showing dozens of the people on the banks of a river close to where logging companies have concessions. The Mashco Piro have been seen coming out of the rainforest more frequently in recent weeks. More than 50 Mashco Piro people appeared in recent days near a village of the Yine people called Monte Salvado. Several logging companies hold timber concessions inside the territory inhabited by the Mashco Piro. CNN —A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Peru overnight Friday at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGC). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PWTC) issued an alert warning of “possible” tsunami waves reaching up to 1 to 3 meters along some coasts in Peru. “Based on all available data, hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts,” the center said. PWTC said there was no risk of a tsunami for the US West Coast. The quake hit eight kilometers (5 miles) west of Atiquipa, about 600 kilometers (372 miles) south of the capital Lima.

CNN —Bolivia has arrested more than a dozen high-ranking military and intelligence officials following a failed attempt to unseat the country’s president in a coup allegedly led by its former army chief.
