Ukraine's troops have been conducting operations on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River across from Kherson. AdvertisementUkrainian troops have crossed the Dnipro River, a natural barrier that has been working to Russia's advantage, and appear to be making a risky play to kick-start a struggling counteroffensive. Ukrainian troops hunker in hastily made trenches, facing stiff defenses and overwhelming numbers of Russian forces, recent reporting indicates. As the AP noted in a report Wednesday, Ukraine could possibly outflank Russia and relieve pressure on Ukrainian forces in Zaporizhzhia to achieve a breakthrough. One private in Ukraine's 38th Marine Brigade who'd been across the river since the start of November said Ukraine's forces were vastly outnumbered.

(Reuters) - Russian forces have foiled several attempts by Ukrainian units to cross the Dnipro River in the southern Kherson region over the past day, Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday. According to the ministry, Ukrainian "sabotage and reconnaissance" teams were stopped while trying to cross the river near the villages of Pridniprovske, Tiahynka and Krynky. Russia also said it had destroyed Ukrainian personnel, water-crossing equipment and vehicles near the village of Stanislav. On Friday the Institute for the Study of War, a U.S. research group, said Ukrainian forces appeared to have broken through on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson. Ukraine recaptured parts of the Kherson region late last year after months of Russian occupation.

Kyiv CNN —Over the last week, a secret delivery of American weapons and a cross-river raid have injected much-needed energy into Ukraine’s largely stalled counteroffensive. In the east, Ukrainians claim to have inflicted massive losses on Russian forces trying to encircle an embattled city. Russian forces have launched waves of attacks repelled by the Ukrainian troops who are heavily entrenched in the area. Extensive flooding inundated villages and swept away structures after a dam was destroyed in southern Ukraine on Tuesday, according to local officials and imagery of the aftermath. In the town of Antonivka, about 40 miles downriver from the Kakhovka dam, residents looked on in horror at the roiling coffee-colored floodwaters released by its destruction. About 4,000 residents remained there before the flooding on Tuesday, out of a prewar population of about 13,000. Ukraine and Russia blamed each other for the attack on the dam, which is in Russian-held territory. In Nova Kakhovka, the city immediately next to the destroyed dam, the City hall and the Palace of Culture were inundated.
