- German software giant SAP reported a bottom line undermined by heavy restructuring costs, but lifted forecasts for the year ahead. Europe should avoid regulating artificial intelligence and focus its attention on the results of the technology instead, the CEO of German enterprise tech giant SAP told CNBC Tuesday. Christian Klein, who has held the top job at SAP since April 2020, said Europe risks falling behind the U.S. and China if it overregulates the AI sector. While it's important to mitigate the risks associated with AI, Klein argued that regulating the tech while it's still in its infancy would be misguided. "Especially for the startup scene here in Europe, it's very important to think about the outcome of the technology but not to regulate the AI technology itself."

The Biden administration is proposing a rule that would provide women with private insurance access to over-the-counter birth control pills and other contraceptives at no cost, the White House said on Monday. “This rule, once finalized, will expand contraception coverage for 52 million women of reproductive age with private health insurance,” White House Gender Policy Council Director Jennifer Klein said during a briefing. “For the first time ever, women would be able to obtain over-the-counter contraception without a prescription at no additional cost, and health plans would have to cover even more prescribed contraceptives without cost sharing,” she said. Perrigo Co.’s Opill is currently the only daily birth control pill approved for sale without a prescription by the Food and Drug Administration, but the proposed rule covers other forms of over-the-counter contraceptives, including emergency contraception such as morning after pill Plan B, spermicides, birth control sponges, and condoms. The rule will also require that health plans cover all FDA-approved contraceptive drugs and some devices, including IUDs, without cost sharing in many cases.

Thailand’s foreign ministry said it was “profoundly saddened” by the death of a Thai worker in northern Israel on Friday, according to a statement. The Thai foreign ministry disputed that account, saying the death, and the injury of another of its nationals, had resulted from “an explosion of dropped ammunition” without providing additional details. The statement said the embassy was working to evacuate 10 additional Thai nationals from the kibbutz where the incident had occurred. The agriculture industry in Israel has employed thousands of Thai nationals to tend crops and work in dairies. ☆ U.S. bans Chinese firms in Uyghur region as Beijing fights forced labor claims

The U.S. has added two new Chinese companies to a Xinjiang trade blacklist over forced labor accusations. The Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday that a Chinese steel manufacturer and an artificial sweetener maker would be placed on the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) Entity List. The list, which now includes 75 entities, bans imports that are made in full or in part in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Region, based on the assumption that forced labor of China's Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities was used in their manufacturing. The European Union has endorsed new laws that will ban products made using forced labor and require big firms to preform human rights and environmental audits on overseas suppliers. Taiwan is also reportedly considering its own bill on forced labor, similar to the UFLPA.

Now, she's off to work on her own via User Mag, a new Substack publication she's launching this week. The Substack was an immediate success, and within a few months, Yglesias had 9,800 subscribers, paying him around $80 a year. Yglesias says he now has nearly 18,000 subscribers, which means he is likely grossing at least $1.4 million a year.
