Male artists ‘peak in their 40s,’ Tracey Emin says

CNN —Renowned British artist Tracey Emin has said that many male artists, like her contemporary Damien Hirst, “peak in their 40s,” whereas women retain their creative force as they age. “Women have the capability of doing that (carrying on) as long as they’re given the opportunity to do it,” Emin said. And I think people who don’t make art or don’t attempt to be an artist, don’t understand how difficult it is to have that conviction, that self-belief and everything. Damien was a young artist that started off with a lot of that belief and a lot of that conviction. Emin added that her health issues have given her a newfound perspective on life, saying she doesn’t measure life by money or accolades.

Joan of Arc: Why does her image still resonate?
  + stars: | 2024-10-15 | by ( Tacita Quinn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
CNN —More than 800 years after her birth, Joan of Arc — a patron saint of France — remains an object of not just historical, but cultural fascination. Humble beginningsOne of five children in a peasant family in Domrémy, in north-eastern France, Joan was born in the year 1412. The Amazonian image of Joan of Arc in armor is perhaps the most recurrent one in popular culture, inspiring thousands, if not hundreds and thousands, of similar depictions. It also provided the inspiration for Carl Theodore Dreyer’s silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) starring Renée Jeanne Falconetti. She is also a cautionary tale for young women, a brutal warning of the fickle nature of celebrity and a symbol of morality and strength.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote in his memoir that Queen Elizabeth II had bone cancer. AdvertisementAfter Queen Elizabeth died on September 8, 2022, her official cause of death was listed as old age. Queen Elizabeth II's father died of lung cancer, which Harris said George himself may not have seen coming. "Both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip always wanted the headlines to be focused on the work of the monarchy rather than their individual health conditions," Harris said. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were both private about their health.

London CNN —Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has controversially broken royal protocol and claimed in his upcoming memoir that Queen Elizabeth II was suffering from bone cancer before her death. Johnson isn’t the first prime minister to reminisce about his life, time in office and interactions with the late Queen in an autobiography. Buckingham Palace has a policy not to comment on books released about the royal family and as such has not confirmed or denied Johnson’s assertions. Johnson, who served as prime minister between 2019 and 2022, recalls traveling to the royal residence of Balmoral for the customary outgoing audience and resignation. Thinking back on that last time the pair sat together in the Queen’s drawing room, Johnson said that he understood Young’s forewarning.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —Australia’s national broadcaster has released an internal review that found “systemic” racism within its ranks, prompting an apology from the managing director to all current and former staff. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) review was announced last year after high profile Indigenous anchor Stan Grant stepped away from anchoring duties, accusing the network of failing to publicly defend him from racist attacks. The report released Tuesday, titled “Listen Loudly, Act Strongly,” found that “systemic” racism exists within the ABC and that staff members also experience racism from external sources. Of 120 staff members interviewed by external consultants, only one said they hadn’t personally experienced racism. However, that person said they were “aware of racism occurring at the ABC.”“This response overwhelmingly indicates that racism exists within the ABC workplace, and that ABC staff are subjected to racism from external individuals and organisations in connection with their work,” the report found.

London CNN —A record-breaking series of auctions of King Charles III banknotes has raised £914,127 ($1.2 million) for 10 UK charities, according to the Bank of England. The banknotes, auctioned by Spink & Sons over the summer, sold for 11.7 times their face value of £78,430 ($100,318), as collectors snapped up some of the first versions of the new cash to roll off the printing presses. The runaway success of the auctions highlights the value that collectors attach to banknotes with especially low serial numbers, which denote that they are among the first to be printed. “Lucky numbers” also attracted high bids, according to Spink & Sons. Two £5 notes with serial numbers ending in 88 and 888 were auctioned for £2,200 ($2,800) and £2,400 ($3,100).

A government spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that two major taxpayer-funded spending commitments, worth £500 million and £800 million, respectively, were being dropped in order to prioritize other fiscal plans. Earlier this week, British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves announced a raft of spending cuts after revealing Labour had inherited a projected £22 billion ($28 billion) of unfunded pledges from the center-right Conservatives. The Labour government was widely expected to announce the introduction of the first-ever U.K. AI Bill in a speech delivered by King Charles III last month. A DSIT spokesperson instead told CNBC the government would consult on plans to regulate AI in due course.

London CNN —Entertaining the King of England is an expensive business, France is finding out. A sumptuous lobster dinner held to welcome Britain’s King Charles III to Paris last September cost the French president’s office nearly €475,000 ($515,000), according to accounts published on Monday by France’s public auditor. The state dinner included outlays of more than €166,000 ($180,000) for catering and €42,000 ($46,000) for drinks, on top of other costs including furniture, flowers and table decorations. King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, attended the banquet as part of a three-day state visit to France, which had been postponed from earlier in 2023 because of widespread protests over Macron’s pension reforms. Huw Edwards, who left the BBC in April after many years leading the British national broadcaster’s coverage of major events, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to three counts of making indecent images of children. Mr. Edwards, 62, is charged with sharing illegal images on WhatsApp. The guilty plea caps a stunning fall for the television anchor, who presented the BBC’s flagship 10 p.m. newscast and was a familiar face in many British households. In 2022, he announced to the nation that Queen Elizabeth II had died, and he presided over coverage of her funeral and the subsequent coronation of King Charles III. This is a developing story.
