The group released the survey last week with two nonprofit organizations, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Civic Empowerment Education Fund and Asian American Futures. The survey authors interviewed 1,253 Asian Americans across six of the largest Asian ethnic groups in California. Ramakrishnan said the results are relatively consistent with Asian American voters in the past. Still, there continues to be a misconception that appealing to Asian Americans, which often requires multilingual outreach, is too expensive, Ramakrishnan said. But hiring more Asian Americans on campaigns could help solve that issue.

They found that registration for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders increased by 43%, from 550,682 to 787,982 voters. However, things changed in 2020 when Asian Americans had a significant double-digit increase in presidential election turnout. Ramakrishnan pointed out that since the data set ended before Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race, it’s likely that the increase in Asian American voter registration is even more dramatic. “We’re seeing this more generally, regardless of race and ethnicity, but especially what I’ve seen is among younger voters, among female voters, voter registration has gone up significantly in the last month,” he said. “I would expect the Harris candidacy to also drive higher voter registration and higher voter interest among Asian Americans.”For more from NBC Asian America, sign up for our weekly newsletter.

Despite being disqualified from the gold medal match just hours after she made Olympic history, Vinesh Phogat is still being hailed by many online for her bravery and resilience. The wrestler from Team India, who on Tuesday became the first woman from her country to make the Olympic finals, will not be participating in the women’s wrestling 50kg gold-medal match due to being "a few grams" over the weight class, according to the Indian Olympic Association. The Indian Olympic Association didn’t elaborate on the matter and requested privacy for Phogat. In a January 2023 letter, the group accused Singh of sexual harassment against several young female wrestlers. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat is detained by the police while attempting to march to India's new parliament in New Delhi on May 28, 2023.

With every tumble, handspring and stuck landing at the Paris Olympics, trailblazing two-time gold medal gymnast Carlos Yulo of Team Philippines ignited a wave of Filipino pride. The 24-year-old cemented his legendary status after he took the top spot in the men’s floor and vault events, making him the first male athlete in the Philippines history to win a gold medal. The wins made Yulo the second person ever to take home gold for the Philippines after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won the women’s 55-kilogram event in 2021 at the Tokyo Games. He also accounts for the totality of the Philippines’ medal count this year. “It’s also not seen as much of a priority … For a lot of people in countries like the Philippines, it’s about survival.

Viewers have had mixed reactions to athletes who have gotten engaged during the Paris Games. While some feel that the grand gesture makes Olympians’ big moments even bigger, others say that the proposals steal the spotlight from female athletes in particular. A Chinese social media site even jokingly shared a post featuring an added engagement ring column alongside the medal counter. But proposals done just after a monumental win have drawn some of the most scrutiny from some fans. And many social media users came to the couple’s defense, arguing that the proposal took place after the medal ceremony.

“I really gravitated towards the sugary ultraprocessed foods — it was like a physical drive, I had to have it,” he said. While many people addicted to food will say that their symptoms began to worsen significantly in adolescence, some recall a childhood focused on ultraprocessed food. The Institute of Food Technologists, an association of food professionals and technologists, does not agree with the research on ultraprocessed food addiction. “Children who eat a lot of ultraprocessed foods could well be malnourished.”According to the International Food and Beverage Alliance, however, there is no clear, objective, reliable or scientifically validated definition for “ultraprocessed” food. “Each time I would pray, ‘Please be it, please make this the answer.’ But I would ultimately start binging on ultraprocessed foods,” Odwazny said.

A somewhat didactic early chapter describes the explosive (and real-life) arrival in 2001 of the French reality show “Loft Story,” in which everyday contestants spend 70 days trapped in a surveilled house together before being released back into reality, fresh prey for their newfound fans. In de Vigan’s novel, both Clara Roussel and Mélanie Claux were schoolgirls when they watched its finale. “They’d believed that Big Brother would be incarnated in an outside power, authoritarian and totalitarian,” de Vigan writes of Clara’s family. “But Big Brother hadn’t needed to use force. Their paths cross when Mélanie’s daughter, Kimmy, disappears outside her home in November 2019.

Also seeding tech start-ups are Kimmy and Sergio Paluch, who founded Beta Boom, which funds underrepresented tech entrepreneurs who lack easy access to capital. Like many other recent arrivals, Ms. Paluch said, she wanted to be part of the evolving city but was also acutely aware that the growth had raised housing prices. The state, unlike many others, does not require developers to include affordable housing in their projects. In the past, “you had to look really hard to find the underground, the arts, the music,” said Ms. Brown, who is also the executive director of Craft Lake City, which organizes arts festivals in the city. “But you do not have to go outside of our state to find incredible talent,” she added.

Millions of Mormon crickets have arrived in Elko, Nev., the spindly copper creatures blanketing parts of the city, so staff members at the Shilo Inns Elko on Saturday discussed ways to combat them. Hotel workers poured a hot water mix of vinegar, bleach and dish soap. They even aimed pressure washers at the brown clusters of exoskeletons. Finally, Kimmy Hall, the general manager of Shilo Inns, told her overwhelmed staff: “We can’t win against them. But we can hold them off.”Such has been the mood in Elko, a city of roughly 20,000 residents, as it’s been infested with Mormon crickets, which have recently hatched and are in a migratory phase.

With the launch of Meta Verified, Mark Zuckerberg is appearing more like Elon Musk by the day. Now, let's look at why people are starting to say that Zuckerberg "idolizes Elon Musk." With the announcement of Meta Verified, Meta's new verification subscription service for Facebook and Instagram, many have drawn comparisons between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. Schilsky added: "I think it's clear that Mark Zuckerberg idolizes Elon Musk." Black VCs like Beta Boom's Kimmy Paluch are addressing long-standing diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in the industry head-on.
Funding to Black VCs rose to $3.4 billion in 2022 from $2.3 billion in 2021, new data reveals. Yet, that's 2.1% of the record $162.6 billion the US venture industry raised in 2022, data shows. These Black VCs hope to change the industry by investing in more underrepresented startup founders. Venture funding to Black investors bounced back in 2022 after a precipitous dip the year before. Do you know of other Black VCs who started or lead funds to back underrepresented founders?
Three days a week, Edward Wan, of Bethesda, Maryland, steals away to a ballroom dance studio so he can glide across the floor in the company of older Chinese immigrants like him. Wan, 78, is one of the countless Asian immigrants who’ve regarded ballroom dance as a sort of creative sanctuary, but are now shaken by the two shootings incidents, one of them deadly, that shook California dance halls on Saturday. “It’s an injustice to ballroom dance. Ballroom dance itself is almost like going to learn poetry or sitting down to meditate,” Wan said. Ballroom dance helped him move forward, he said.
Gun violence isn’t innate in Asian culturesGun violence, experts note, is not inherent in the Asian diaspora's culture. So Ho condemned those attempting to paint the Asian American community with a broad brush due to the pair of tragedies. Gun control organizations haven’t invested enough time and resources in the Asian American community, Ramakrishnan said. And campaigns and parties have often targeted Asian American voters with a focus on education and affirmative action, he said. And Dhingra said he fears that, as more attacks occur in Asian American spaces, it could lead to more Asian Americans purchasing weapons for self-defense, leading to more firearms to be used and misused.
It’s the Year of the Rabbit and we should all be focusing on rest, introspection and working smarter not harder. Though it was a weak swimmer, the rabbit used its brain, opting to cross the river portion of the course on a raft. … If you did just jump in because of FOMO, you’re going to have a whole slew of issues.”The rabbit in the Chinese zodiac also speaks to the power of empathy. What does my community need? How can I make myself of service to my community?” Lee said.
Since the incident, a sense of shock has rippled through the school’s Asian community. The students say that conversations around the incident have been active among the Asian Americans on campus. Karen Cheng, a senior at the university and the president of the school’s Asian American Association, noted a similar sense of fear. As an Asian American woman, she said, public safety concerns predate the tragedy. But the community is also flanked by some areas with white supremacist activity, something many Asian American students are aware of, Cheng said.
The Biden administration on Tuesday released its first national agenda aimed at addressing the range of disparities that Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities face. More than two dozen officials and community leaders gathered to formally unveil a strategy that was spearheaded by the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. Among the administration’s priorities are combating anti-Asian hate and discrimination, the disaggregation of data across the communities and better language access, according to the report. In the strategy, the agencies laid out some of their previous work pertaining to the communities, in addition to new goals. And I’ve been so heartened by the support of this administration that has gone beyond the usual political rhetoric."
Yeoh's moment was refreshing for Jeon, a self-proclaimed assertive Asian American woman. And for Asian women, who contend with historical pressures from within the community and beyond to make themselves small, Yeoh’s quip had a deeper meaning. She simultaneously represented other Asian women who are more compelled to speak their minds. Jeon, for example, said that she has often been reminded by loved ones to tone down her personality in spaces within the Asian American community. While many women are taught to downplay their strengths, particularly in front of men, Yeoh flexed her might in those five words.
Chiang’s tenure comes shortly after Thomas L. Keon, chancellor of PNW mocked Asian languages during a winter commencement. A post published by nonprofit Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, written by writer Emil Guillermo, said that action from Chiang could send a strong message. The first Asian American president fires the racist chancellor who told a bad Asian joke.”Keon did not respond to a request for comment. “The Board has therefore issued a formal reprimand to Dr. Keon.”Thomas L. Keon, chancellor of Purdue University Northwest in Indiana. Instead, he said, it’s reflective of larger problems that Asian and Asian American students often faced.
Michelle Yeoh won the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical. Yeoh took home the award Tuesday for her starring role in the psychedelic comedy drama “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”“Whew! In her acceptance speech, Yeoh recounted how she wasn’t always accepted in the industry. “Someone said to me ‘You speak English?’ I mean, forget about them not knowing Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India. For Yeoh, the film is also significant because of the familiarity of its depiction, albeit a bit unconventional, of the immigrant experience, she said.
Ke Huy Quan has won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture. The “Everything Everywhere All At Once” actor took home the award Tuesday for his portrayal of doting husband and laundromat owner Waymond Wang. “I was raised to never forget where I came from and always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” he said. The role is also significant for the actor personally, as it marks his return to acting after more than two decades working behind the camera. It wasn’t until the 2018 rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians,” which featured an all-Asian cast, that Quan began to reconsider his options, he said in the Roundtable.
Following the Biden administration’s implementation of a new Covid-19-related travel requirement for passengers flying in from China, Asian American advocates and experts are urging caution and nuance amid years of heightened anti-Asian violence. Several Asian American organizations and leaders have expressed concern over the requirement of a pre-departure negative Covid test from those flying in from the country. “What I would ask everyone to do is, again, be careful not to conflate the virus with an ethnicity or a group of people,” said John C. Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC. But some groups like Stop AAPI Hate, a nonprofit that tracks incidents of hate and discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, strongly opposed the policy. The group pointed to previous travel restrictions under the Trump administration in January 2020 that coincided with a rise in hate incidents against the racial group.
