Highly successful people possess a skill that helps them get and stay ahead, says a Harvard-trained executive coach: They listen with curiosity. "It's really not that hard," Muriel Wilkins, co-founder of leadership consulting firm Paravis Partners, recently told the "Radical Candor" podcast. Listening is the biggest and the most underused skill that helps drive empathy, and a lot of other things as well." Nearly all (96%) professionals consider themselves to be good listeners, according to 2015 research from Accenture, a IT consulting company. However, 50% of adults don't recall what they hear only moments after hearing it, a 2013 Carnegie Mellon study reported.

Hard work, determination and perseverance can all contribute to a successful career. But there's one key underrated element, according to Everette Taylor, CEO of the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter: Timing. And though he says he's worked diligently to achieve his current stature, timing played a huge role, too. For example, "the way Kickstarter discovered me is that one of the board members happened to be reading a Financial Times article about me," he says. But also the intentionality to put yourself in a position to have new opportunities and then execute on those opportunities," he says.

Then, he sold the company and landed a VP of marketing job at another startup. Two soft skills helped him navigate that journey, he says: empathy and risk taking. At Kickstarter, Taylor recently implemented a four-day workweek for his employees, a risk that comes with pros and cons. For now, it's paying off, Taylor told Time in June: "We've been just as productive or even more productive with a four-day workweek." Other risks aren't worth taking, Taylor says.

Unstable Diffusion is an AI image generator with minimal content restrictions. That's what Chaudhry did when starting Unstable Diffusion in August 2022, the same month Stable Diffusion was released to the public. The community launched a Kickstarter campaign in December to raise money to build its image generator, but was removed from the platform 12 days later. At the time, experts told Insider that being featured in non-consensual deepfake porn can be traumatic and considered abuse. TechCrunch was able to use the generator to create images that produced look-alikes of Donald Trump and Chris Hemsworth, for example.

In the summer of 2022, he got access to TikTok Shop and began selling his books through the app. Last summer, I started using TikTok Shop as a platform to sell my books directly to people in the UK. Since I began using TikTok Shop, I've made over £11,000, about $14,000. With TikTok Shop, I end up with £2 or £3 per book more than when I sell through Amazon, on average. But because there are better margins on TikTok, I'm in control of discounts and offers.

A TikTok video of shoes that claim to help you walk 250% faster went viral earlier this year. That's because the shoe will make you walk 250% faster, according to Xunjie Zhang, who developed it. An average person can cover about three miles per hour at a walking pace, Zhang says in the TikTok video. "The faster you walk, the faster the shoes walk with you," Zhang said. "For the small small price of $1399," a sarcastic comment read on the viral TikTok video.
Politicians have been threatening a nationwide TikTok ban unless ByteDance sells its stake in the app, a move China said it "strongly" opposed. "That's the power of TikTok," Spangler said, adding that the app drives the majority of sales for his business, The Good Chad. Portland welcomed the city's — and possibly the country's — only sports bar that exclusively shows women's sports on its TVs. Founder and owner Jenny Nguyen told CNBC the business made nearly $1 million in its first eight months. The bar has gone viral online and received the attention of WNBA stars and more. Nguyen told CNBC that the Oregon bar raked in $944,000 in revenue during its first eight months, despite her fears not many would share her love for women's sports. "Me, personally, I thought the idea was brilliant and that (it was) what the world needs," Nguyen told CNBC.
Former marketing manager Brooke McDaniel said the four-day schedule increased her productivity. She has since started a new job with a five-day schedule but says the schedule was one of her cons. The company transitioned to a four-day workweek while I was on the road. Remote work was the most important factor for a trip like mine, but knowing the four-day workweek was coming gave me additional motivation. All in all, it made me more aware of how I spend my timeThe work-life balance that a four-day workweek offered me was incredible.
At the time, back in 2018, a New Zealand firm had just wrapped up a landmark trial to test the efficacy of a four-day workweek. A lot of the benefits of the four-day workweek come down to a simple, everyday activity: sleep. A lot of the benefits of the four-day workweek come down to a simple, everyday activity: sleep. Less time, more productiveThough the four-day workweek may seem like a recent phenomenon, it's been decades in the making. But for now, the four-day workweek certainly has the potential to be a far-reaching antidote to pressing workplace concerns such as mass resignations and the burnout crisis.

Known for its smoke-free backyard fire pits and camping stoves, the brand was started in 2011 by brothers Jeff and Spencer Jan. It's grown from Kickstarter campaigns to a $2 billion valuation when it went public in 2021 as Solo Brands under CEO John Merris. That same year, it acquired outdoor brands, Chubbies, Oru Kayak and Isle while generating about $404 million in revenue. Here's how Solo Stove turned fire pits in a multi-million dollar empire.
Brothers Jeff and Spencer Jan didn't have to reinvent the wheel to build a $400 million company with a cult following. Their company, Grapevine, Texas-based Solo Brands, makes the Solo Stove — a backyard fire pit that the Jan brothers describe as a "virtually smokeless" campfire alternative. As of Tuesday morning, the company now has a $406.74 million market cap under the stewardship of CEO John Merris, who signed on in 2018 after meeting with the brothers. "I remember in that first conversation with them, Spencer and Jeff telling me that they had reinvented fire," Merris tells CNBC Make It. Then, the brothers sent Merris home with a Solo Stove — and the first time he tried it out on his Texas ranch, he was "absolutely blown away."

Employers and employees are beginning to see the benefits of a shorter work weekAmerican workers are expressing interest in a shorter work week. Companies outside of the UK that have experimented with a shorter work week also said that they have seen their profits and productivity jump as a result. California and national law makers have introduced similar bills to shorten the work week, though they have stalled and failed, respectively. "I think the question is not if, but when America is going to move to a shorter work week."

But in 2018, I quit my job at the Montessori school and founded my company, Mind Brain Emotion, where I sell practical card games on emotional intelligence. I used Amazon Ads to bid on keywords that consumers used to search for similar productsA bid is the amount of money you're willing to spend toward a keyword or advertisement. I did more market research between fall 2018 and February 2019, and another card deck was born, 52 Essential Relationships, in March 2019. I went backward to move forward in my business because I recognized that in order to have genuine conversations, trust and understanding are prerequisites.
Facial recognition software immediately identifies the man as … a giraffe? While there, she read about how tenants in Brooklyn had fought back against their landlord’s plans to install a facial recognition entry system for their building. “This was the first time I heard about facial recognition,” she says. Whichever route they took, they had to test the images on a well-known object detection system called YOLO, one of the most commonly-used algorithms in facial recognition software. At the recent World Cup in Qatar, creative agency Virtue Worldwide came up with flag-themed face paint for fans seeking to fool the emirate’s legion of facial recognition cameras.
CNBC obtained copies of Hasbro's reformed licensing agreements — open game license 1.1 and an FAQ section for OGL 2.0. Leaders in the Dungeons & Dragons community greeted the news of the delay with cautious optimism. The attempt to create a new game license comes as Wizards of the Coast looks capitalize on a surge in popularity of Dungeons & Dragons. Chaotic neutralThe reworking of Hasbro's open game license is not an unexpected move for the business, MKM's Handler said. There were growing concerns that the community would fracture if publishers were forced to move away from the Dungeons & Dragons game mechanics to develop their own gaming systems.

While I learn how to math, my editors Matt Weinberger and Jake Swearingen will update you on tech this week via this newsletter. Before I bounce, let's catch up on the big pains of Big Tech. This type of messiness will likely permeate throughout Big Tech this year. Welcome to Salesforce's week from hell. The day after announcing big layoffs last week, CEO Marc Benioff didn't seem to notice that he was a full 18 minutes late to an all-hands meeting to discuss the cuts.
Unstable Diffusion, which campaigns to legitimize AI porn, was banned from Kickstarter last month. Originating on Discord, Unstable Diffusion allows users to artificially generate explicit imagery. The group's campaign was active from December 9 to December 21, raising around $56,000 in its 12-day active period. However, they told Insider that the site had not banned all AI art. Everette Taylor, Kickstarter's CEO, seemingly referenced some of the backlash in a blog post about AI art published on December 21.

That's what Ryan Culver, Caroline Elston, and Lowell Bieber, the Indiana-based friends behind charcuterie subscription service Platterful, discovered when they teamed up to launch their venture last year — and made $40,000 in their first month. Culver and Bieber previously partnered on a health-and-wellness subscription box, which they successfully scaled and sold in September 2020. Entrepreneur sat down with the trio to learn how they built their meat-and-cheese side hustle — and continue to fuel its growth. Even though Culver and Bieber had subscription experience, the cofounders did have to contend with a new complication: cold shipping. [With cofounders] you have other people to lean on — if you're having a tough day, maybe someone else is having a good day.
