BALTIMORE (AP) — Three teenagers were wounded in a shooting outside a west Baltimore high school around the time classes were starting Friday morning, officials said. The shooting adds to a recent uptick in youth violence plaguing the city this year, including several instances of Baltimore public school students being shot on or near high school campuses. In the aftermath of the shooting, which was reported just before 8 a.m., frantic parents gathered outside the school. Baltimore City Schools spokesperson Sherry Christian said officials had made contact with parents of the wounded students earlier that morning. The vocational school is located in a west Baltimore neighborhood that has long suffered from cycles of poverty, disinvestment and violence.

His death has been memorialized as an egregious hate crime that helped fuel the LGBTQ+ rights movement over the ensuing years. In 2011, the military scrapped the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that kept gay, lesbian and bisexual service members in the closet. Several activists interviewed this week by The Associated Press evoked Matthew Shepard as they discussed broader developments. The act expanded the federal hate crime law to include crimes based on a victim’s sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. It is a popular choice for high school theater productions but has faced opposition due to policies resembling Florida's “Don't Say Gay” law that have surfaced in various states and communities.

The New York Jets celebrated Nathaniel Hackett's return to Denver by rallying past the Broncos 31-21 on Sunday behind Breece Hall's 72-yard touchdown run and Bryce Hall's 39-yard game-sealing scoop-and-score off Russell Wilson's fumble in the final minute. That gave Hackett, the Jets' offensive coordinator who was fired after going 4-11 as Denver's head coach last season, a measure of satisfaction. Then, Wilson led the Broncos to a touchdown and 2-point conversion to make it 24-21 late in the fourth quarter. Fans streamed to the exits after that turnover and it was eerily mostly empty while Jets players hugged Hackett on the sideline. Breece Hall's long TD run up the middle came on the Jets' second snap of the second half and put them ahead for good at 15-13.

What Is the 50/30/20 Rule?
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( Kevin J. Ryan | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +7 min
Perhaps the most popular method is the 50/30/20 rule, which is a simple and effective way to take control of your money. The 50/30/20 budget rule was popularized by Sen. Elizabeth Warren—then a Harvard Law professor—and her daughter, Amelia Warren Tyagi, in their 2006 book “All Your Worth: The Ultimate Lifetime Money Plan.” They called it a “good rule of thumb” for getting your budget in order. What is the 50/30/20 rule? Alternatives to the 50/30/20 budget methodOf course, no one budgeting method is for everyone. For example, like the 50/30/20 rule, the 70/20/10 rule also divides your after-tax income into three categories but differently: 70% for monthly spending (including necessities), 20% for savings and for 10% donations and debt repayment above the minimums.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, are worth roughly $15 million, per Forbes. Forbes noted that one of the major reasons Kennedy does not have more money is "the Kennedy family tree has a lot of branches." RFK Jr. Forbes estimated in 2015 that the entire Kennedy family fortune was worth $1.2 billion. According to Forbes, Hines also has two retirement accounts, which hold between $600,000 and $1.7 million, mainly in stock and bond index funds. Some of Kennedy's family members have been outspoken in their support of President Joe Biden, and he's struggled to make in-roads with Democrats.

August 16 - The Colorado Rockies have not won consecutive games in August and haven't had a three-game winning streak since mid-June. It might help that the Rockies are sending a revitalized Austin Gomber (9-9, 5.33 ERA) to the mound in the finale while the Diamondbacks will counter with rookie Slade Cecconi (0-0, 2.84). The Diamondbacks also prevented Colorado from clinching its first series win against an NL West opponent this season. The Rockies' last series win within the division was Sept. 9-11, 2022, against Arizona. Gomber has been Colorado's best pitcher since June 25, going 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA in nine starts.

CNN —The actress Leah Remini has filed a lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, claiming she has suffered years of harassment, intimidation and defamation as part of an organized campaign of retaliation for her criticism of the church since leaving it a decade ago. After leaving the church in 2013, though, the actress became a fierce and high-profile critic: She published a memoir in 2015, “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology,” and went on to host three seasons of the docuseries, “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” on A&E. “Leah Remini has become what she once vowed she would never be: ‘This bitter ex-Scientologist,’” the church said in a 2016 statement in response to the series. People walk past the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles in 2012. The church allegedly paid social media companies to promote the posts targeting Remini, the lawsuit says, adding Scientology’s “old-school, mob-style tactics” extend beyond social media.

REUTERS/Hannah BeierJuly 3 (Reuters) - In state after state, conservative lawmakers this year have banned medical procedures for transgender youth. Now, a growing number of federal judges are blocking those laws from taking effect. The court rulings offer temporary relief from the recent rush of bills banning transgender youth from receiving treatments such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy. Democrats, LGBTQ advocacy groups and health providers say the bans unjustly target a vulnerable community for whom gender-affirming care can be life-saving. The judges also have said laws banning such care violate a parent's right to make healthcare decisions for their children.

It's not unusual for a company's stock price to soar — or sink — on news of a CEO shakeup. So, CEOs matter when picking stocks — and at the Club, these are the five things we look for when evaluating the leaders of our holdings. A stock's day-to-day and even month-to-month performance may not truly reflect how well a CEO is leading a company. Trust has value, and the stocks of companies led by reputable CEOs with competent management teams can trade at premium valuations. The New Jersey jury returned a verdict of $25.6 million, including $25 million for punitive damages and $600,000 in compensatory damages, according to Console Mattiacci Law, which represents Phillips. The jury ruled unanimously after a six day trial, the lawyers said, noting that Phillips will also be seeking back and front pay. Starbucks said it is disappointed in the decision and is evaluating its next steps, spokesperson Jaci Anderson told CNN. Starbucks was ordered to pay $25.6 million in damages to a former employee this week. Shannon Phillips claimed she was fired from her role as a regional director because she was white. After a 2018 viral video, Phillips pushed back on disciplining a white manager who wasn't involved, she said. The director — who disagreed with Starbucks' handling of the issue that triggered a nationwide discussion on race — had claimed in a lawsuit that she was fired because she was white. She disputed that the white district manager was involved, said she had no performance-based reason to suspend him, and said the store in question was overseen by a Black district manager who was not facing discipline, she said in the suit.

LONDON, May 6 (Reuters) - Police arrested the leader of the anti-monarchy group Republic and 51 others at King Charles' coronation on Saturday, with officers saying their duty to prevent disruption outweighed the right to protest. [1/7] Protesters hold placards as people gather on the day of Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla's coronation ceremony, in London, Britain May 6, 2023. Most of the anti-monarchy protesters on Saturday had congregated in Trafalgar Square next to the bronze statue of King Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649, leading to a short-lived republic. Since Charles became king last September, there have been protests at royal events. Events to mark the coronation in other countries where Charles is head of state were also low key.
Well-wishers gather along the path that Britain's King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla will travel during the procession marking their coronation along the main streets of London, Britain, May 5, 2023. His second wife Camilla, 75, will be crowned queen during the two-hour ceremony which, while rooted in history, will attempt to present a forward-looking monarchy. People, royalists and royal fans gather along The Mall in preparation for the Coronation of King Charles III on 5th May 2023 in London, United Kingdom. Much of the ceremony will feature elements that Charles' forebears right back to King Edgar in 973 would recognize, officials said. People, royalists and royal fans shelter under umbrellas and waterproofs as torrential rain arrives as people gather along The Mall in preparation for the Coronation of King Charles III on 5th May 2023 in London, United Kingdom.

Clorox's Kingsford raised prices on charcoal early this year as it prepared for grilling season. Most consumers are wary of "greedflation," or when companies raise prices to pad their profit. That included price hikes on Kingsford, Clorox's charcoal brand, CFO Kevin Jacobsen told Reuters. According to Reuters, eight pounds of Kingsford Original Charcoal briquettes, for instance, cost $7.92 on Walmart's website this week. As a result, Kingsford lost market share to competitors, Jacobsen told Reuters.
