LOS ANGELES, Jan 30 (Reuters) - The late pop singer Michael Jackson will be portrayed by his 26-year-old nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the biographical movie “Michael," the Lionsgate studio said on Monday. "Michael" will explore “the complicated man who became the King of Pop,” Lionsgate said in a statement. The Jackson family denied those accusations and the Michael Jackson estate won its appeal that year. Jaafar Jackson is the son of Michael Jackson’s older brother, Jermaine Jackson, who is also a singer and producer. “Jaafar embodies my son," said Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, in the news release.
WASHINGTON, Jan 26 (Reuters) - The FBI revealed on Thursday it had secretly hacked and disrupted a prolific ransomware gang called Hive, a maneuver that allowed the bureau to thwart the group from collecting more than $130 million in ransomware demands from more than 300 victims. They were then able to alert victims in advance so they could take steps to protect their systems before Hive demanded the payments. In that case, the Justice Department seized some $2.3 million in cryptocurrency ransom after the company had already paid the hackers. The Justice Department said that over the years, Hive has targeted more than 1,500 victims in 80 different countries, and has collected more than $100 million in ransomware payments. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the FBI's operation helped a wide range of victims, including a Texas school district.
[1/3] People walk along a rocky beach caused by high surf following winter storms in San Diego, California, U.S., January 17, 2023. The White House said Biden, who on Saturday authorized federal disaster assistance for three hard-hit counties in northern and central California, would be joined by Governor Gavin Newsom and other elected officials. Twisted wreckage of wooden piers torn up along the waterfronts at both locations vividly illustrated the storms' destructive force. The high winds wreaked havoc on the state's power grid, knocking out electricity to tens of thousands of Californians. The incident between The Journal reporter Dion Rabouin and the Phoenix officer occurred in late November, but just became public his week after ABC affiliate KNXV reported on the matter. WASHINGTON, Dec 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate still has "a lot of negotiating left to do" on a bill that would fund the federal government through Sept. 30, 2023, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday. Without prompt action by Congress, federal agencies will run out of funding on Dec. 16 under a stop-gap spending bill now in place. Should Congress not pass a full year "omnibus" spending bill, or at least a stopgap measure that would maintain current funding levels, parts of the government would be forced to shut down. A stopgap measure, known as a continuing resolution, would force the military to operate under funding levels of the last fiscal year, forcing it to rely on legacy equipment and halt development of new technologies. But just 31% of that group has gotten updated booster shots. Hospital physicians, state public health officials and advocacy groups for older adults pointed to a variety of factors fueling the low booster uptake. They include feelings of fatigue at the pace of Covid shots and a lack of awareness that the new booster could make the difference between a mild case and a hospital visit. Morell said she experienced dizziness, blurry eyesight and heart palpitations after her first Covid booster in November 2021. Wachter said the majority of people who have gotten the new booster get mild Covid, even if they’re older or have risk factors.

WASHINGTON, Oct 31 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday will call on oil and gas companies to use their record profits to lower costs for Americans and increase production, or pay a higher tax rate, as he battles high pump prices with elections coming in a week. A White House official said Biden will again call on oil and gas companies to "invest their record profits in lowering costs for American families and increasing production." "And if they don’t, he will call on Congress to consider requiring oil companies to pay tax penalties and face other restrictions," the official said. Whether Democrats or Republicans take control of Congress, passing a law taxing energy companies for excess profits would likely be difficult, energy experts believe. The White House for months has been considering congressional proposals that could tax oil and gas producers' profits as consumers struggling with higher energy prices.
