NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The market for U.S. initial public offerings is starting to crack open, but some trends are playing better than others. Shares in thrift store chain Savers Value Village (SVV.N) opened 38% above their IPO price on Thursday even as two other new entrants, Fidelis Insurance (FIHL.N) and energy company Kodiak Gas Services (KGS.N), got a frosty reception. After pricing above its indicated range and then rising further, Savers Value was worth nearly $4 billion in its early hours of trading. It follows Cava (CAVA.N), the Mediterranean lunch chain that by Thursday was worth nearly double the IPO price of $22 it established in mid-June. Meanwhile, Fidelis and Kodiak had to cut their price range, and both debuted below their opening price.

Kodiak Gas Services (KGS) , a natural gas compression company, priced 16 million shares at $16, below the price talk of $19-$22. That was not only below the price talk of $16-$19, but the 15 million shares offered were below the projections of 17 million shares. The IPO market is reopening, but cautiously All three serve different investor bases, each with its own outlook, Santosh Rao at Manhattan Venture Partners told me. The simple fact that all three deals got done is a sign the IPO market is reopening after being largely closed for 18 months. The IPO market is reopening, but with a strong reality check from the customers.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermidJune 29 (Reuters) - Thrift store operator Savers Value Village (SVV.N) fetched a market capitalization of nearly $4 billion in a strong debut on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, underscoring a resurgence in the IPO market as investors lap up new listings. Savers Value, owned by private equity firm Ares Management (ARES.N), joins a host of companies that have enjoyed a warm reception in recent months, reviving hopes the frosty IPO market has begun to thaw. So really this (an IPO) was the right smart option for us to move forward," said Savers Value CEO Mark Walsh. Savers Value and Ares raised over $401 million in the share sale on Wednesday.

Companies Kodiak Robotics, Inc FollowSAN FRANCISCO, June 22 (Reuters) - Autonomous truck technology firm Kodiak Robotics will equip its self-driving software in 800 trucks for logistics platform Loadsmith, the companies said in a statement on Thursday. Instead, investor focus has shifted to companies that offer less-complex, less-cash intensive forms of autonomy with a proven business model. Kodiak and Lordsmith said pairing autonomous trucks for long haul with local drivers will improve efficiency and safety for shippers, and help allay concerns over a nationwide driver shortage. There will be no safety driver involved in the autonomous part of the operations for Loadsmith, a Kodiak spokesperson said. California-based Kodiak partners with companies such as Swedish furniture giant IKEA and France-based CEVA Logistics for freight deliveries in Texas.

At the midpoint this would raise $298 million, with a fully diluted market value of $2.1 billion, according to Renaissance Capital. At the midpoint of the proposed range, that would raise $328 million with a market value of $1.5 billion. "The IPO market is definitely opening up," he said. Goldman Sachs' David Kostin has also noted an improved IPO market. The bad news: the stock dropped the day after the IPO to roughly $38 and has remained in that range.

Kodiak Gas Services aims for $1.65 billion valuation in US IPO

June 20 (Reuters) - Kodiak Gas Services said on Tuesday it is aiming for a valuation of about $1.65 billion in its U.S. listing, expecting to benefit from returning investor appetite for new offerings. The company is looking to sell 16 million shares in its initial public offering priced between $19 and $22 apiece. Last week, Mediterranean restaurant chain Cava Group (CAVA.N) saw its valuation nearly double after its shares surged in a stellar market debut. In May, Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ.N) consumer health business, Kenvue (KVUE.N), managed to complete the largest IPO since Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O) listed in 2021. Kodiak Gas Services said it is looking to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "KGS".

REUTERS/Phil NobleCOVENTRY, England, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Developing fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) that can go everywhere has proven harder and more expensive than expected, but investors are continuing to fund startups that target simpler self-driving vehicle solutions far removed from pedestrians and other vehicles operated by unpredictable humans. Earlier promises made by robotaxi companies of operating fleets of vehicles by the early 2020s have fallen well short. BMW iVentures has also invested in AV truck technology firm Kodiak Robotics, which managing partner Sage said has adopted a simpler approach to areas like mapping. Construction and agricultural equipment - used off-road in low-traffic environments - has been another growth area for AV startups. U.S. agricultural equipment maker AGCO Corp (AGCO.N), for instance, is using the Palo Alto, California-based startup's software for an experimental automated electric planter.

The company's RS1 rocket lifts off on its inaugural launch attempt from Kodiak, Alaska on Jan. 10, 2023. The first mission by ABL Space got off the ground on Tuesday, but the company's RS1 rocket suffered an issue early in the flight that caused it to fail shortly after lifting off. ABL President Dan Piemont told CNBC that the RS1 rocket stayed within the predefined "acceptable flight corridor" during the short launch, but after the rocket's engines shut down the vehicle "impacted directly on the launch pad," causing damage. ABL's RS1 rocket stands about 90 feet tall, and is designed to launch as much as 1,350 kilograms (or nearly 1.5 tons) of payload to low Earth orbit — at a cost of $12 million per launch. That puts RS1 in the middle of the commercial launch market, between Rocket Lab's smaller Electron and SpaceX's heavy class Falcon 9.
300,000-year-old cave markings in Germany suggest Stone Age humans were wearing clothes. Humans skinned huge cave bears to keep warm, per markings on bones analyzed by experts. This phalange, a bone from the paw of a cave bear, suggests that humans skinned cave bears and wore their pelts 300,000 years ago. The findings, published December 23 in the peer-reviewed Journal of Human Evolution, provided some of the earliest evidence of humans wearing clothing. Another sign is that all the cave bear bones and teeth found in the archeological site were from adults, which is "usually considered an indication of hunting," said Verheijen.

Self-driving truck startup Kodiak Robotics said Tuesday that it won a two-year, $49.9 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to help develop automated combat vehicles for the U.S. Army. The company said the vehicles will be tailored for reconnaissance, surveillance and other missions that would present a high risk to a human driver. The contract was awarded by the DoD's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and is part of the Army's ongoing Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) program. DIU said it received 33 responses to its initial solicitation in October, and selected Kodiak and another vendor, development software provider Applied Intuition, after an extensive review process. The award marks the latest development in the DoD's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge self-driving competitions, which began in 2004.
Self-driving truck startup Kodiak Robotics said that it has begun a pilot program with IKEA in Texas. Kodiak's CEO, Don Burnette, said that he isn't looking to put truck drivers out of business – in fact, he's aiming to make their lives easier. Texas has become a hotbed for self-driving truck testing, in part because of favorable regulations -- and also because the long highway stretches between its cities are ideal for automation. Self-driving truck startup Aurora Innovation has also been testing trucks in Texas. Another startup, TuSimple , has been testing its self-driving semitrucks in Arizona and is planning to expand to Texas next year.
Ryan Seare, 47, was the first of his neighborhood friends to invest in a Hawaii vacation home. He convinced four other families to join him at a property in Kauai where shares start at $445,000. For his precedent-setting investment, Seare chose Timbers Kauai, an intimate community of 47 homes tucked away on Kauai's southeast shore near a lighthouse, a marina, and a Costco. Between the Seare, Phillips, and Smith families, there are 13 kids ranging in age from 2 to 17. "Sometimes when you're on vacation, you don't want to see people you know, because that's part of vacationing.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A U.S. Coast Guard ship on routine patrol in the Bering Sea came across a guided missile cruiser from China, officials said Monday. A C-130 Hercules provided air support for the Kimball from the Coast Guard station in Kodiak. The Coast Guard said Operation Frontier Sentinel guidelines call for meeting “presence with presence” when strategic competitors operate in and around U.S. waters. The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to questions about the incident from The Associated Press. In September 2021, Coast Guard cutters in the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean encountered Chinese ships, about 50 miles off the Aleutian Islands.
