PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A roadside bomb hit a convoy of foreign diplomats visiting northwest Pakistan on Sunday, killing a police officer in their security detail, police said. Ambassadors from Indonesia, Portugal, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, Iran, Russia, and Tajikistan were among those in the convoy, police said. Police made security arrangements for the foreign ambassadors and they were immediately rescued and moved towards Pakistan's capital Islamabad, Khan said. Offering sympathies to the families of those who died, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement that “all members of the diplomatic corps have returned safely to Islamabad.”Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari also condemned the attack. Pakistani counter-terrorist forces maintain a strong presence in the Swat valley, which has long been a hotbed of Islamist militant insurgency.

Concerns about the use of cryptocurrencies for illegal activity resulted in an effective ban on crypto mining and transactions. After a massive public outcry at the end of 2021, mining companies in Kazakhstan were effectively cut off from the grid. Today, the US makes up about 40% of the global hashrate — up from 17% during China's 2021 peak — making America the biggest hub for bitcoin mining. However, in recent years, bitcoin mining has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of private companies. Given how much energy bitcoin mining consumes, it's worth questioning whether its presence in the US is really worth the trade-off.

But it was only when Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine , in 2022, that Ammosov began to plot the overthrow of his homeland. As I found in months of wide-ranging interviews, everyone aspiring to a new Russian revolution grasps the seemingly impossible odds of their bid to topple Putin. Ponomarev — who was profiled last year in The Washington Post under the headline "Could this man bring down Putin?" Most applicants live in Russia, Sokolov tells me, but submissions have come from as far away as Uruguay. "I know a lot of good officers" in the CIA, Ponomarev told me, who "sympathize" with the anti-Putin insurgency.

But memories weren’t enough for one British tourist, who was caught this week engraving the initials of himself and his family into one of the city’s 2,000-year-old houses. Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79CE and is now one of Italy's most popular -- and most fragile -- tourist sites. However in June, when a tourist from Kazakhstan was caught carving his initials on the House of the Ceii in the ancient city, Pompeii’s director Gabriel Zuchtriegel said that the tourist would have to pay for the restoration of the wall. A lesser charge for defacing heritage sites can impose fines between 10,000 to 40,000 euros. In 2022, an Australian tourist even rode a moped around the ancient site.

Yevhen Litvinov was brushing his teeth on Thursday morning when his phone started buzzing — a friend had sent him a YouTube video showing the victory of the Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Khyzhniak at the Paris Olympics overnight. He hit play and watched Mr. Khyzhniak delivering punch after punch to his opponent, Nurbek Oralbay of Kazakhstan. As the final bell rang and Mr. Khyzhniak’s hand was raised, Mr. Litvinov said he was lifted by a surge of pride. “Pride for the nation, for our athletes,” said Mr. Litvinov, a 48-year-old resident of Kyiv. Since the beginning of the year, Russian troops have steadily gained ground in Ukraine, dampening the public mood.

It might seem more like an artform than a sport, but breakdancing — known professionally as breaking — is making its Olympics debut this month in Paris. The Olympics adopted the same name to honor its culture and history and preserve its authenticity, Nifontov said. Mr. Pommel Horse has had quite the week. Stephen Nedoroscik, dubbed "Pommel Horse Guy" by the internet, became an Olympic bronze medalist Monday, then a meme. He won bronze on the pommel horse, performing a more difficult routine than in the team final and scoring a 15.300. In the team final, Nedoroscik faced a grueling 2½-hour wait on the sidelines before he could perform his one routine, but the circumstances could not have been more cinematic. The internet was quick to dub him “the pommel horse guy," and likened him to Super Man's alter ego, Clark Kent.

Nedoroscik sat in the agonizing bronze-medal position with one more competitor to go in the pommel horse final, unable to do anything but sit and watch. The set up was an about face from Nedoroscik’s hero-making turn during the men’s team final. Then the pommel horse specialist waited the entire meet before performing his routine, the last man up on any apparatus. Stephen Nedoroscik finishes his pommel horse routine in the final and the crowd goes WILD! Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan, the gold medalist, is a two-time World Champion and Max Whitlock of Great Britain has won the last two Olympic golds on pommel horse.

The so-called "Magnificent Seven" were among the hottest stocks last year, but one wealth manager says they are "wildly overvalued" and has his sights elsewhere. The Magnificent Seven comprises Alphabet , Amazon , Apple , Meta Platforms , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla , which continue to be in the spotlight thanks to the buzz around artificial intelligence. Other global stocks Global stocks Dennison is betting on include Fresenius Medical Care , a German health-care company, and Kazatomprom, a Kazakhstan-headquartered producer of uranium. "It is a top position in many pension portfolios and has become a value stock because of the strong Swiss Franc," he said. Every year in Kazakhstan, workers pull hundreds of thousands of tons of copper from below the nation’s soil. Exporting oil and metals has been the life force of this former Soviet republic’s economy for decades. Now, as the world moves toward cleaner energy and electric vehicles, nickel and other minerals have become even more valuable, kicking off a boom. China, the country’s neighbor to the east, is well positioned to capitalize. It has invested billions upgrading Kazakhstan’s rail lines ...… and new ports and other infrastructure — visible symbols that this Central Asian country is open for business.

LONDON — The number of global millionaires is set to keep rising over the next five years — with the U.K. a stark outlier, according to the 2024 Global Wealth Report from UBS. Gains will be led by tech powerhouse Taiwan, where the number of millionaires is set to jump 47% on the back of the booming microchip industry and a rise in immigration by wealthy foreigners. The two hubs in which the most global millionaires are based, the U.S. and mainland China, are set to see their figures rise 16% and 8% respectively. Another country where the number of dollar millionaires is forecast to decline was the Netherlands, which is estimated to see a 4% drop in such wealthy individuals. The report meanwhile sees the number of U.S. dollar millionaires in Russia growing by 21%.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi walk during their meeting at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence near Moscow, Russia July 8, 2024. Their partnership has become more complicated, however, as Russia has moved closer to China amid international isolation of Moscow over Ukraine. Russian state media reported that they would also discuss Moscow helping India build more nuclear power plants. The two countries already are collaborating on the Kudankulam nuclear power project in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. With Moscow's arms industries mostly serving the Russian military in Ukraine, India has been diversifying its defense procurements, buying more from the U.S., Israel, France and Italy.

During his two-day visit, Modi is expected to attend a private dinner hosted by Vladimir Putin and hold talks with the Russian president, according to India’s foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. Reducing the trade imbalance would be a “matter of priority” in Modi’s discussions with Putin, he added. Modi’s visit to Russia is also widely seen as the latest dent in efforts by Western leaders to cast Putin aside. Later that year, Putin did not attend the Group of 20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi, during which leaders delivered a consensus statement criticizing his invasion of Ukraine. Following his Russia trip, Modi will visit Austria in the Indian leader’s first visit to the European nation, according to his office.

However, Washington acknowledges that India's ties with Russia are different from its ties with the US. Make no mistake — the United States and its allies are more consequential for India's future than its relationship with Russia," wrote Shinde. India needs to leverage its historical ties with Russia to secure its economy and security, so Modi isn't just in Russia for a goodwill trip. CNN —China and Belarus announced they were holding joint military training exercises just miles from the border of Poland – a NATO and European Union member. Belarus’ Ministry of Defense said troops from China’s People’s Liberation Army arrived in Belarus over the weekend. The exercises are taking place near the Belarus city of Brest on the Belarus-Poland border which is around 130 miles from the Polish capital of Warsaw and some 40 miles from Minsk’s border with Ukraine. Moscow partly used Belarus as a launching pad for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 after amassing troops on the Ukrainian border during what it said were joint military exercises. The Chinese troops arrived in Belarus just days after that country joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Thursday.
