American colleges and universities are major training grounds for future Olympians. Three out of four of those athletes played at the collegiate level, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee. The school's most recognizable alum is swimmer Katie Ledecky, who, as of Wednesday, has won 12 Olympics medals in her career, including eight golds — tying Jenny Thompson's record for the most by any female swimmer in Olympic history. After Stanford, next on the list is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with 17 athletes, and the University of Southern California (USC) with 16. Here are the top 10 colleges and universities with the most American athletes in the 2024 Olympics:

All this comes not long since Biles said she had considered walking away from gymnastics having experienced a mental block called “the twisties” at the Tokyo Olympics. “I started off with therapy this morning,” Biles said on Tuesday after the team event. I told my therapist I was feeling calm and ready.”She ended the day alone in the center of Paris’ Bercy Arena, completing her floor routine to rapturous applause.

Ledecky, 27, has reigned in the event, then, for more than half her life. In winning her first gold in Paris and her 12th Olympic medal overall — tied for the most by an American female swimmer with Jenny Thompson — she reaffirmed her credentials in one of sports’ more exclusive clubs: Were the swimmers with the 20 fastest times in the 1,500 to all gather at the pool, Ledecky would be racing alone, which, to be fair, is what it looks like on television.

The last time that Katie Ledecky was beaten in a 1,500-meter freestyle event was a regional swim meet in Maryland 14 years ago. “There’s not, like, a ton of details that I can recall,” Pawlowicz said recently. “It was just a midsummer gauge type of meet to see where you’re at. Nothing special or crazy about it.”The mile, as the 1,500 freestyle is colloquially known, is generally considered the sport’s most grueling event. Even Ledecky, 27, who loves distance racing and has built a career around it, called it “fully masochistic” in her recently published memoir.

Once Snoop Dogg had waded through electrical cords on the floor and ambled his lanky frame around the disorderly equipment in a partially constructed television studio in Paris, he was able to peer out over a balcony overlooking the Eiffel Tower and survey the city he hopes to conquer during the Olympics. “This is my home,” he said triumphantly to himself. Below, a handful of people flashed their phones. The man who NBCUniversal hopes will become the breakout star of the Paris Games was right where he wanted to be. The Olympics are always about the athletes, and as usual the focus this year will be on the brightest ones: Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Noah Lyles, Novak Djokovic, LeBron James.
