JUSTIN TALLIS/Pool via REUTERSLONDON, May 7 (Reuters) - The leader of anti-monarchy group Republic and other members were released from custody after hours of detention during Saturday's coronation of King Charles that raised questions over whether the police response had been proportionate. Republic said that detained members began to be released late on Saturday evening, after nearly 16 hours in custody. Tens of thousands of people turned out to catch a glimpse of the newly crowned King Charles and Queen Camilla, who rode in a state coach back to Buckingham Palace after Saturday's service at Westminster Abbey. Not everyone who came to watch was there to cheer Charles, with hundreds of republicans booing and waving banners reading "Not My King". "I think overall (the police) managed to get that balance right," Frazer told Sky News.

Justin Tallis | AFP | Getty ImagesBritain struck a historic trade deal to join a vast Indo-Pacific trade bloc after nearly two years of intense negotiations. The U.K. said this was the country's largest post-Brexit trade deal and makes it the first European nation to join the CPTPP, since it came into force in 2018. watch nowNatalie Black, the U.K.'s trade commissioner for Asia Pacific, called it a "progressive deal" for Britain. Deborah Elms, executive director of the Asian Trade Centre, said it's very hard to calculate these trade figures, especially based on existing trade flows. watch nowThe trade flows are always "under what you actually are likely to see in the reality as businesses recognize the benefits and start to use a trade agreement like the CPTPP," she added.
And in these moments of economic uncertainty and market volatility, investors should look to buy up the stocks of companies with the highest-quality balance sheets. The Club's Big Tech holdings — Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon (AMZN) — check that box. Alphabet was the group's biggest gainer Wednesday, climbing 2.3%, followed by Meta and Microsoft, which rose 1.9% and 1.8%, respectively. META 5D mountain Meta Platforms (META) five-day performance. The benefits of a sturdy balance sheet are manifold, especially when it comes to the cash piles Big Tech companies have accumulated.
The news: Morgan Stanley said Alphabet, Amazon (AMZN) and Meta are among the stocks that are best positioned to capture long-term gains from maturing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. AI has the ability to "accelerate digital transformation, change consumer behavior and drive more durable multi-year digital growth," Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a research note this week. Moreover, this "AI Effect" could create a $780 billion online advertising opportunity, with "GOOGL and META as the largest beneficiaries," according to Morgan Stanley. The Club take: The Morgan Stanley note is further validation of just how real the generative AI opportunity is. So, it's encouraging to see Morgan Stanley paint a positive picture about Apple in the near-to-medium term.
Holding banners reading "Climate Criminals Enter Here" and "No New Oil," activists from climate action group Fossil Free London gathered outside the luxury hotel to protest BP's continued fossil fuel investment. "An energy system that works is one that provides energy that is secure and affordable as well as lower carbon — what's known as the energy trilemma," Looney said. "To solve it, action is clearly needed to accelerate the energy transition and at the same time, that transition has got to be orderly. We need to invest in the energy transition and — not or — we need to invest in today's energy system, which is predominantly an oil and gas system." The extraordinary scale of the oil and gas industry's earnings has renewed criticism and sparked calls for higher taxes.

Amazon Amazon has been battling with rightsizing its business due to the pull-forward demand it experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. We'd also like to see how the company is addressing slower growth at its cloud business, Amazon Web Services (AWS). Microsoft Microsoft has been pressured by weakening demand for personal computers, the strong U.S. dollar and tightening enterprise budgets for the cloud. "I think the company could have a decent quarter and it hasn't had to issue a warning about what is now the declining dollar," Jim said. The largely abysmal results for the last quarter led Jim Cramer to urge investors to limit their exposure to tech and semiconductor stocks . The market cap of the Club's five Big Tech stocks are collectively down 42% over the last 12 months, as of Thursday's close, according to FactSet. Here's a closer look at each of our tech stock's valuation changes, along with our analysis, too. Being close to its 5-year average valuation doesn't make it the most enticing P/E compared to other tech stocks whose valuations have dropped more than their historical averages. "Our sequential head count growth from Q1 to Q2 will be minimal. ... We've added a lot of head count over the past 12 months, and we want to make sure we use those head count in the most productive way possible," Hood said this week. "We are holding some teams flat in terms of head count, shrinking others, and investing head count growth only in our highest priorities," Wehner said.

New York CNN Business —Around the world, markets are flashing warning signs that the global economy is teetering on a cliff’s edge. There’s now a 98% chance of a global recession, according to research firm Ned Davis, which brings some sobering historical credibility to the table. In an interview, its CEO was asked whether he believes the slowdown was a sign of a looming global recession. The upshotWhile the consensus is that a global recession is likely sometime in 2023, it’s impossible to predict how severe it will be or how long it will last. Not every recession is as painful as the 2007-09 Great Recession, but every recession is, of course, painful.
