7 highest-grossing movie ever with $1.7 billion globally. Director James Cameron has made three of the top 10 biggest movies of all time. 7 highest-grossing movie of all time over the weekend with $1.7 billion worldwide, passing "Jurassic World" and the 2019 "Lion King" remake. Next up is the sixth biggest movie ever, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which grossed $1.9 billion. It's the highest-grossing movie of 2022 at the global box office, dethroning "Top Gun: Maverick."
"Avatar: The Way of Water" has surpassed "Maverick's" box office haul in just its first three weeks in theaters, raking in an astonishing $1.51 billion worldwide since Dec. 16 according to Box Office Mojo data. Box office watchers don't expect "Avatar 2" to slow down any time soon. Along with the original "Avatar" ($2.92 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.2 billion), Cameron has now directed three of the 10 biggest blockbusters ever. "The first movie famously just kept going and going and going." "Avatar's" box office dominance wasn't a given from the outset.
"Avatar: The Way of Water" has made over $1 billion in ticket sales in just two weeks. James Cameron's blockbuster, the sequel to the highest-grossing movie of all time, joins "Jurassic World: Dominion" as a 10-figure earner this year and may depose Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick" as the highest-grossing 2022 release by the end of its time in theaters. "Avatar's" performance means that 2022 will end with three films passing the billion-dollar threshold at the box office. While that's a far cry from the nine billion-dollar grossers that 2019 — the final full box office year before the pandemic — had, it's still an increase from 2020 and 2021 which had zero and one movies earn over $1 billion, respectively. Though some industry watchers had predicted that the domestic box office would cross $8 or $9 billion, those hopes were dashed in part because some big-budget films have been delayed, including another Tom Cruise title, the hotly-anticipated "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning".
It’s not that theatrical film exhibition was in a particularly good place before the pandemic. Yet the astounding box-office figures of 2022 tell a different story: Movie theaters didn’t become obsolete. It offered up the best of the moviegoing experience: spectacle, plus quality, plus rewatchability. But best of all, the hunger for the overly familiar was not the only story to be told this year. But if the pandemic-era absence of theatrical releases proved one thing, it’s that people love going to the movies, really love it, and not just to see Marvel movies.
Avatar: The Way of Water took more at the box office in its first 10 days than the original film. On its opening weekend, the sequel failed to live up to studio expectations for ticket sales. The $253 million box office take suggests the film will maintain momentum into the new year. "Avatar" made $212.7 million in its first 10 days in 2009 and went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time, taking more than $2.9 billion. The sequel is estimated to have made $56 million in North America over the weekend, compared with $134 million on the opening weekend – lower than the $150 million to $175 million projections.
Disney and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” snared an estimated $56 million during its second weekend in theaters, a 58% drop from its debut. A decline in ticket sales is common for blockbuster titles, with most seeing a 50% to 70% slip. Box office analysts noted that cold winter weather and storms during the Christmas weekend likely led to slower ticket sales domestically. Additionally, international ticket sales continue to thrive. “The Way of Water” has generated $855 million in global ticket sales since its Dec. 16 release — $254 million domestically and $601 million from international markets.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is expected to have one of the biggest box-office debuts of the year. But it will need sustained word-of-mouth over the next several months to perform like the first movie. But it will take weeks to know whether it's the kind of word-of-mouth sensation that the original movie was. Robbins predicts that, similar to the first movie, "The Way of Water" could have a more "back-loaded" theatrical run than most blockbusters these days. "The Way of Water" might have to perform at similar levels if it wants to be a success.
China's film officials have been extra stingy about granting Marvel movies release dates during the pandemic. Marvel movies are still some of the biggest movies being released right now. But "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" was just shy of $1 billion and might have crossed that coveted barrier with a China release. "Love and Thunder" topped its predecessor "Thor: Ragnarok" at the US box office but not in total global sales. DC's "Black Adam" was denied a China release, as well.
The long-awaited sequel to 2018's smash hit "Black Panther" isn't just another Marvel film. "Wakanda Forever" has a chance to not only be the biggest opener in 2022, but also the highest ever opener of the month of November. Box office analysts and theater operators are expecting African American and Hispanic moviegoers to flock to cinemas this weekend. Like "Black Panther," "Wakanda Forever" features a predominately Black cast, but it also has several Hispanic actors. According to Comscore, 37% of the opening weekend audience for "Black Panther" was Black, accounting for more than double what the demographic usually represents for other Marvel films.
It reported 15 million paid subscribers for its Peacock streaming service, up from 13 million in the previous quarter. Total company revenue fell 1.5% to $29.85 billion in the quarter, compared with estimates of $29.65 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Net loss attributable to Comcast was $4.6 billion, or $1.05 per share, compared with a profit of $4.04 billion, or 86 cents per share, a year earlier. The net loss was partly due to an $8.6 billion goodwill impairment charge in its UK pay-TV company, Sky. NBCUniversal's theme parks division generated $2.06 billion in revenue, versus $1.45 billion a year ago.
Comcast on Thursday reported third-quarter earnings that beat analyst estimates, despite seeing revenue slightly decline and continued softness in broadband customer growth. Still, it's a sign that cable broadband providers are facing increased competition from telecom and wireless internet companies. Meanwhile, Comcast's cable unit, which includes pay-TV, mobile and traditional phone services in addition to broadband, saw revenue increase 2.6% to $16.5 billion. The company said broadband revenue jumped 5.7% due to an increase in average rates and the number of its residential broadband customers. Peacock, the company's fledgling streaming service, surpassed 15 million paying customers, an increase of more than 70% year-to-date, the company Thursday.
Universal film chief Donna Langley says movies will never go back to "those exclusive traditional windows" in theaters. "I would love to see a female 'Fast,'" she said about the future of the "Fast & Furious" franchise. Though it seems Langley has an insatiable drive to dominate the cutthroat film industry, she revealed to Insider in a recent phone interview that her mission is simple: "Make the right kind of movies that fit the cultural zeitgeist globally." A T. rex is seen at a screening of the "Jurassic World: Dominion" prologue. Universal StudiosT. rexes preferred a leisurely pace most of the time, strolling around at about 3 mph, according to a study published in 2021. Scientists built a 3D computer model to understand the ideal "resonance" of the T. rex bodies. Every animal has an ideal resonance, meaning the walking speed at which they can move their body forward most comfortably while spending the least energy. "Many animals have a roughly similar preferred walking speeds," between 2.2 and 3.1 mph, Pasha van Bijlert, an author on the study, told Insider at the time.
