Democrats Say the Joy Is Back. Kamala Harris’s campaign has been trying to get voters to feel the joy. “I would say it’s her energy; she’s a joyful, energetic person.”“It just feels really exciting to turn the corner,” she added. Not only did Democrats use more words indicating joy and hope about the election, they also used words indicating feelings of anxiety and apprehension. Still, more than 25 percent of Republicans in July used words like “scared” or “nervous” to describe their feelings about the election.

The party in Chicago is done, the confetti has been swept up, the pictures have been posted to social media. But the real question as exuberant Democrats woke up on Friday was whether they could channel the sheer intoxication of the United Center into a sustained, 74-day sprint to Election Day. The thousands of jubilant delegates in the hall this week were not representative of the swing voters that Ms. Harris needs to defeat former President Donald J. Trump. Ms. Harris can expect a bruising battle over the next two and a half months. Ms. Harris has had one of the most impressive debuts of any general election candidate in recent times, yet she still faces polls within the margin of error.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech gave the stock market a jolt higher, reaffirming expectations for interest rate cuts going forward. Still, I believe the Fed will remain data dependent, which should temper euphoria and keep the S & P 500 in its 2024 range. I want to embrace this range and position accordingly for U.S. equites to again cool off going into September. Volatility has been the overarching theme for August, and I believe the recent uber-sensitivity to macro data will keep markets extraordinarily spastic. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

Harris has strength with young voters and minoritiesBiden in 2020 swept nearly every swing state, boosted by his electoral advantage with young voters and minorities. And the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll taken in Georgia showed Harris and Trump tied at 47% support each among registered voters. And if Trump holds on to 2020 instead of uniting Georgia Republicans, Harris will likely benefit.

Slowdown fearsGlobal markets are a blur of red on Friday as investors fret that the U.S. economy is heading for a slowdown. Lackluster tech earnings are weighing on sentiment (more on that below), but the bigger worry is a softening jobs market and a spending pullback by consumers that threatens to crimp corporate profit. That shines a spotlight on Friday’s jobs report, scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, and bolsters calls on the Fed to lower interest rates at its next meeting, in September. There’s even talk that the central bank could consider a jumbo half-percentage-point rate cut to pull off its hope for a soft landing in which inflation is cooled without tipping the economy into recession.

CNN —During the first whirlwind week of her second presidential campaign, Kamala Harris locked up the support of the Democratic Party, recruited thousands of volunteers and hauled in $200 million in donations. The next test of Harris’ appeal will take place Tuesday in Georgia, where her campaign is hosting an Atlanta rally. “The groundswell of support around the vice president is real and it is meaningful,” Dan Kanninen, Harris’ battleground state director, told reporters Monday. “Tomorrow, Vice President Harris’ visit will highlight her brighter vision for the future, where our freedoms are protected and every American has a fair shot. “Deadpool & Wolverine” clawed through initial analyst expectations, delivering a monster $211 million jolt to the domestic box office. The film’s massive success pushed Marvel past the $30 billion mark at the global office, making it the highest-grossing franchise of all-time. Meanwhile, the box office success coincided with the Disney-owned studio making buzzy announcements at Comic-Con. When President Biden said he would drop out of the presidential race just over a week ago, throwing his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, a jolt of energy instantly excited a beleaguered Democratic base. The party rallied around Ms. Harris, as upbeat memes and positive statistics for Democrats over the past week abounded: $200 million in contributions, a litany of tantalizing vice-presidential options and a rash of improved polling. Ms. Harris now faces harder tasks in the coming weeks: maintaining that enthusiasm as the initial excitement fades, as former President Donald J. Trump and his campaign sharpen their attacks against her. This week alone has important mile markers. Democratic delegates could begin voting to virtually nominate Ms. Harris as early as Thursday, the date the Democratic National Committee said they were expected to do so if only one candidate emerged.

Opinion | The Kamala Harris Report Card
  + stars: | 2024-07-25 | by ( David Brooks | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
At the beginning of 2019 I wrote a column enthusiastically arguing that Kamala Harris was the Democratic Party’s strongest candidate to take on Donald Trump. My core argument was pretty simple: If Democrats hoped to defeat him, they needed the toughest gladiator they could get, and Harris filled that bill. Other moments, I think the Democrats are suffering from a mass hypnotic delusion, nominating a candidate who is seriously flawed. In order to make sense of this mishmash of thoughts, I thought I’d put together a report card of her strengths and weaknesses. In the rallies and events she has done since her ascension, Harris has been dominating, poised and exuberant.

In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition. His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running. And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her. And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.

Delivering a jolt of enthusiasm to a party reeling from weeks of infighting, Vice President Kamala Harris rallied Democrats on Tuesday in Wisconsin and laid out a fierce argument against former President Donald J. Trump. Ms. Harris vowed, in her first rally as the de facto Democratic presidential nominee, to defeat Mr. Trump by attacking him as a prosecutor would. She walked out to cheers to the tune of Beyoncé’s “Freedom,” which the singer had allowed her to use. As one attendee put it, the moment felt like a release of months of pent-up Democratic energy. She highlighted the $100 million in contributions since Sunday and took a victory lap for effectively wrapping up the Democratic presidential nomination within 48 hours.

Picture Books That See Shadows in a New Light

Which is why it’s so refreshing to find two picture books that present shadows for what they are: the non-nefarious interplay of light and dark. Ultimately, her shadow is joined in a meadow by those of two other children and a dog (the four of them now “friendly” shadows). It is in the presence of harsh light — rather than the depths of darkness — that the story turns somber. It was a thinking shadow, a shadow you could feel but not see. Feng’s soft-lined illustrations visually articulate the essence of Handy’s “stretching shadows,” easing day into night.

In today's big story, President Biden's comeback plan isn't working , and Democratic leaders are ready to move on . President Joe Biden's reelection campaign appears to be on its last legs as calls within his party have grown from whispers to shouts since his disastrous debate last month. But for some Democrats, the risk of Biden continuing his reelection campaign could extend from the White House to Capitol Hill. Still, despite mounting pressure, Biden's campaign has remained steadfast about his reelection bid.

How Emmanuel Macron blew his legacy
