A $120 million megayacht linked to a Russian billionaire has been docked in Antigua and Barbuda for 19 months. Now taxpayers in the small country are paying $28,000-a-week to maintain the idle vessel, per the WSJ. The Alfa Nero is a $120 million vessel that was raided by armed police and the FBI in August 2022, having been left in Antigua's Falmouth Harbor since Russia invaded Ukraine six months earlier. The US Treasury Department has linked the Alfa Nero to Andrey Guryev , a Russian oligarch who the department says is a "close associate" of Vladimir Putin. The Journal reports that the country's residents are paying $28,000-a-week in taxes to maintain the Alfa Nero, including the salary of an Italian captain and $2,000-a-day in diesel to keep its air conditioning running.

Why Miró’s Yellows Have Lost Their Brilliance
  + stars: | 2023-09-18 | by ( Katherine Kornei | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
From Van Gogh’s sunflowers to Edvard Munch’s “The Scream,” there’s no shortage of seminal artwork that was made with a striking hue known as cadmium yellow. But that riot of color that artists squeezed from their paint tubes isn’t necessarily what museum goers see today: cadmium yellow’s brilliance often diminishes over time, as the paint fades and turns chalky. A team of art conservators and scientists recently analyzed bits of degraded cadmium yellow paint taken from pieces painted by the Spanish artist Joan Miró in the 1970s. Cadmium yellow paint is an amalgam primarily of cadmium and sulfur. Miró described the color as “splendid.” Tubes of cadmium yellow paint, including Cadmium Yellow Lemon No.1 produced by the Parisian manufacturer Lucien Lefebvre-Foinet, litter Miró’s two studios in Mallorca, Spain.

California's legislature unanimously passed Piqui's Law, named after a 5-year-old murdered by his father following a custody dispute. This week, the California legislature passed that bill, known as "Piqui's Law." In cases where fathers countered by claiming alienation, judges were even less likely to credit mothers, she found. At the July 11 hearing, Estevez, too, criticized a California family court's response to her reports of abuse. T’s new monthly travel series, Flocking To, highlights places you might already have on your wish list, sharing tips from frequent visitors and locals alike. Majorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, has been a classic summer destination for Europeans and Brits for decades. In the last few years, a number of artists and designers have left larger cities in Europe and moved to Majorca. For the first installment of our series of Flocking To travel guides, we asked four locals or frequent visitors to Majorca to share the places they love most. One word of advice for first-time visitors: Majorca sprawls across roughly 1,400 square miles (it’s about the size of Long Island), so if you’re planning on exploring, you might want to rent a car.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In the US, prosecutors are given enormous power to apply the law as they see fit, choosing who to charge and what to charge them with. Evidence of their misdeeds can secure convictions and allow for strict sentences that otherwise couldn’t be imposed. Aug 13 (Reuters) - A Kansas newspaper that was searched by police said its 98-year-old co-owner died on Saturday from stress related to the incident, which free press advocates condemned as a possible violation of the Marion County Record's First Amendment rights. "Stressed beyond her limits and overwhelmed by hours of shock and grief after illegal police raids on her home and the Marion County Record newspaper office Friday, 98-year-old newspaper co-owner Joan Meyer, otherwise in good health for her age, collapsed Saturday afternoon and died at her home," the paper reported. Marion County Police also searched the newspaper office on Friday, seizing personal cell phones, computers and the newspaper server, among other equipment, the Record said. On Saturday, he issued a statement justifying the search of the newspaper. The Kansas Press Association described the search as "unprecedented" and "an assault on the very foundation of democracy."

A Long Island restaurateur who was a key witness in a public corruption investigation was sentenced to four years in prison Wednesday, ending an episode that churned up allegations of endemic wrongdoing that stretched across New York City and one of its most populous suburban areas. He testified for 17 days in two trials against Mr. Mangano, who is now serving 12 years in prison. On Wednesday, Judge Joan M. Azrack of the Eastern District of New York called Mr. Singh “a master of pay to play.” But she credited his help to prosecutors, which revealed a dark nexus of politics and business. “The extent and nature of his cooperation is possibly unmatched by any defendant in a corruption investigation,” Judge Azrack said. She also noted Mr. Singh’s age and health problems, as well as the support of his family, commending him for raising three successful sons.

Louis Vuitton has long cultivated art-world connections to generate cultural cache for its products. PARIS—The Joan Mitchell Foundation has sent Louis Vuitton a letter demanding it pull advertisements for its handbags featuring paintings by the late American artist, saying the ad campaign was shot without the foundation’s permission. The cease-and-desist letter—which was sent Tuesday by the foundation’s lawyers to Louis Vuitton CEO Pietro Beccari and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal—alleges that Louis Vuitton illegally reproduced and used at least three works by artist Joan Mitchell for the promotion of its commercial goods.

Mossos d'Esquadra/Handout via REUTERSBARCELONA, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Spanish police have recovered two 100-year-old drawings by surrealist painter Salvador Dali that were stolen last year in a burglary in Barcelona. They also seized other art works including graphic works by fellow Spanish artist Joan Miro, luxury watches and valuable coins and banknotes. The art works - two dark rural sceneries drawn on brown paper - were authenticated by the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation, which holds the rights on the late painter's works, police said. The three brothers are alleged by Catalan police to have specifically targeted homes in the Barcelona region with art works and collections of coins and other antiques.

Motsinger said the move to sustainable business practices, infrastructure, supply chains, and products couldn't wait for the government to mandate such moves. Fitzgerald added that it's key to develop trust among all sides so that businesses could roll out new technology. Once we have safe, reliable, and affordable options in those areas, Fitzgerald said attention might turn to areas considered harder to decarbonize — processes like steelmaking, cement production, and construction.
According to the police, a 6-year-old boy at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia used a gun legally purchased by his mother to intentionally shoot his teacher on Friday. Because, research shows that most children who get intervention early for violent behaviors recover. These can help a child develop a strong foundation for thinking things through and foster an openness or motivation to learn. And I certainly don’t want to draw sweeping and overly upbeat conclusions saying that every individual can be rehabilitated. The reportedly intentional shooting of a teacher by a 6-year-old is awful and heartbreaking.

The event, "Paris+ par Art Basel", was awarded to Art Basel, one of the giants in the art world, which hosts fairs in Switzerland as well as Miami and Hong Kong. Contemporary art, dating roughly from 1945 onwards, made up 23% of the art market in 2020-2021, compared with 3% in 2000-2001, according to the Artprice data bank. The Paris event replaces the International Contemporary Art Fair (Fiac) and follows the high-profile Frieze fair in London. Paris is the only big city in the continent, the only important city for contemporary art, so it was an obvious choice," Kilchmann told Reuters.
