The visit to Selma also is an opportunity for Biden to speak directly to the current generation of civil rights activists. They urged Washington politicians visiting Selma not to sully the memories of the late civil rights activists John Lewis, Hosea Williams and others with empty platitudes. "When voting rights passed after Selma, it didn't just help Black people. We need the president to reframe this: When you block voting rights, you're not just hurting Black people. As a candidate in 2020, Biden promised to pursue sweeping legislation to bolster protection of voting rights.
Feb 14 (Reuters) - A divided U.S. appeals court on Tuesday said federal workers are generally not entitled to extra pay for being exposed to COVID-19 through their jobs. In a 10-2 decision with potentially "far-reaching" ramifications, the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against 188 current and former correctional employees at a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. But the appeals court said the government's Office of Personnel Management, the human resources agency for more than 2.1 million federal workers, had no regulations affording extra pay for exposure in most settings to contagious diseases. Circuit Judge Jimmie Reyna dissented, saying the prison employees plausibly alleged they deserved extra pay for exposure to "unusually" hazardous conditions. The decision is Adams et al v U.S., U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, No.
After Covid-19 decimated the hotel industry and caused closures throughout the nation, Wendy Heineke, 55, found herself at a crossroads. With 35 years of experience, she resigned from her position as a senior vice president at a hotel real-estate investment trust, sold her house in Maryland and hit the road full time in a 42-foot luxury motor coach with her fiancé, Jimmie Steinberg, 53, a serial entrepreneur. The first year was uneventful, and the couple had “an amazing experience” in the $635,000 RV, Ms. Heineke said, traveling 16,000 miles criss-crossing the country. But then they faced an unexpected challenge.

OSLO, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Sweden has ordered additional investigations to be carried out of the damage done last month to the two Nord Stream pipelines, the prosecutor in charge of the case said in a statement on Friday. Sweden and Denmark have both concluded that four leaks on Nord Stream 1 and 2 were caused by explosions, but have not said who might be responsible. "The Armed Forces have upon request decided to assist in the investigation," he added. The prosecutor said the armed forces had the resources and expertise to investigate the crime scene "in the way we wish" but declined further comment. Sweden's armed forces said this week that they were carrying out an independent investigation of the seabed around the leaks with minesweepers.
Like Chuck Berry's guitar, Lewis' piano was essential in shaping rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950s. "Jerry Lee thinks that Jerry Lee is too wicked to be saved." His young son Steve Allen Lewis drowned in 1962 and another son, Jerry Lee Jr., died in a 1973 car accident at 19. In his later years he settled down but biographer Rick Bragg recalled interviewing Lewis for his 2014 book "Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Words." "I don't think Jerry Lee Lewis had to exaggerate his life one bit to make it interesting," Bragg told the Atlanta Constitution Journal.
The Moderates, Christian Democrats, Sweden Democrats and Liberals won 176 seats against 173 for the centre-left in the Sept. 11 vote, but their loose alliance has to be formalised if Kristersson is to become prime minister. read more"Nothing is finalised until everything is finalised," Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson told reporters after meeting the speaker of parliament. Kristersson's Moderates have fewer seats than the Sweden Democrats, a populist, anti-immigrant party with roots in the far-right fringe, but Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Akesson cannot secure enough backing to form a government himself. The Liberals, whose support Kristersson also needs, have ruled out sitting in government with the Sweden Democrats and will not support a coalition that includes them. Russian President Vladimir Putin might be losing on the battlefield, at least for the moment, but it’s a mistake to count out the master of the Kremlin.
