“We’ve never seen so many of them so early in the season and we strongly believe it’s because of the better weather. Their annual round-trip journey between June and early September covers up to 6,214 miles (10,000 kilometers). Humpback whales spend their summers feeding in sub-tropical waters, where they also mate and give birth, according to Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment. Humpback meets kayakOne kayaker had a particularly close-up view in an encounter that was captured by a drone. In the stunning footage, an enormous humpback follows a white kayak in turquoise clear waters off Bondi beach.

Now, it’s nothing to do with albóndigas or xanthan gum, but the “Killed” podcast, from Justine Harman, may be of interest to journalism nerds. It’s about stories that were written, edited, vetted and then … put on a spike for various reasons, some of them bad, some of them good, all of them complicated. Finally, here’s a new song from Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, “King of Oklahoma,” off the band’s “Weathervanes,” out earlier this month.

British streamer BritBox just scored a deal with Comcast as it eyes US expansion. BritBox is like other enthusiast streamers that have sustained growth while big SVODs' growth has slowed. BritBox International, the British-specialty streaming service backed by BBC Studios and ITV Studios, has big ambitions for growth. The Xfinity opportunity is "a real step change in terms of distribution and access," said Reemah Sakaan, CEO of BritBox International. But BritBox sees itself in a good position to complement the big streamers — as British content moves into the mainstream and interest in high-quality, international content grows.

New York CNN —Johnson & Johnson is trying once again to use the bankruptcy courts to settle tens of thousands of cases that claim its talc products cause cancer. The pharmaceutical company is now willing to pay $8.9 billion to plaintiffs over 25 years. A previous attempt to use Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to resolve the talc cases was rejected by an appellate court, which ruled the company couldn’t go bankrupt because it wasn’t in financial distress. Johnson & Johnson has long held that talcum powder products are safe to use. Although J&J claims it has won the majority of its talc lawsuits, juries have awarded some customers billions of dollars in damages, siding with claimants’ arguments that the company’s talc products caused their cancer.

Donna Kelce had a rule for her children growing up: Once you start something, you have to see it through. Coming into the game, both were already Super Bowl champions, with Travis winning in 2020 and Jason in 2018. When the Kelce brothers were growing up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, their parents always preached good sportsmanship, Donna told parenting website SheKnows. The boys were encouraged to try any sport they wanted to play — football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, wrestling. "'Once it's over, if you don't like that team, or if you don't like that sport, you don't have to play anymore,'" Kelce said.
On Dec. 30, leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services committees announced the selection of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and 11 others to serve on a new federal commission on biotechnology. The appointment, however, doesn't require commission members to divest their own personal biotech investments — even as they help shape U.S. policy overseeing the industry. The person didn't say when Schmidt made the decision to donate profits, adding that he hasn't yet named any recipient charities. The new federal commission will likely have a say in steering such investments over the two years of its lifetime. Schmidt's biotech investments are relatively recent.
The blockchain-based creative platform StoryCo is launching a new immersive storytelling concept. People who sign up for a StoryPass (an NFT) can collect digital art and have creative control over "The Disco Ball." StoryCo just raised $6 million in a seed funding round led by VC firms Collab + Currency and Patron. At the end of "Disco Ball," NFT holders "will assume control over the infinitely expanding Disco Ball universe." Half of all net revenue from projects like "Disco Ball" would then be split among the treasury's members after its story writers and creators are compensated.

Sawyer Hemsley founded Crumbl Cookies in 2017 with his cousin in while he was still at college. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sawyer Hemsley, the 30-year-old cofounder and chief operating officer of Crumbl Cookies. In May 2017, Jason said he'd invest $10,000 into the cookie business if we could find a good deal on a building. We talked about our chocolate-chip cookies on social media and paid for Instagram and Facebook ads. If a previous cookie's strength score was under 13%, we take it back into the research-and-development kitchen to improve it.

The victory marked the starting point for what's become Smith's raison d'être to help as many student loan borrowers as possible. But of those who did, around 60% managed to get a discharge of some portion of their student debt, Iuliano found. And thanks to a widely-held belief that student debt is categorically exempt from discharge, few are willing to take that chance. "I have $50k student debt, no degree, was a victim of attempted murder, out of work, and homeless," reads another. Austin SmithEventually, he says, he vowed to make it his life's cause to help the student loan borrowers.
