CNN —Polls opened Sunday in Japan’s general election, in a test for new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba as he seeks voter support for his scandal-hit party just weeks after taking the role. By calling an election, Ishiba, 67, is seeking a public mandate for the ruling LDP amid falling approval ratings and public anger over one of the country’s biggest political scandals in decades. Former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida tried to contain the damage by replacing several cabinet ministers and dissolving LDP factions, essentially coalitions within the party. Ishiba has called for a more balanced relationship, including having greater oversight of US military bases in Japan, Reuters reports. As defense minister, Ishiba was strong on deterrence as a security issue.

Oyama died on September 29 due to old age, according to the Actors 7 agency. Japanese voice actress Nobuyo Oyama during an interview in Tokyo on November 11, 1996. Pittsburgh CNN —In the years that Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick led one of the world’s largest hedge funds, the firm bet millions of dollars against some of the state’s biggest and most iconic companies, financial filings show. For financial institutions, short positions can be lucrative. The fund shorted about four dozen companies from Pennsylvania during McCormick’s tenure, the records show. The fund did invest in stocks of some of the same Pennsylvania companies it shorted in other years, and overall, it reported spending more money buying stocks of Pennsylvania companies than shorting them in four of the five annual reports reviewed by CNN. She argued that the short positions Bridgewater took in Pennsylvania companies didn’t negatively impact employees because they represented a small fraction of each company’s overall value.

CNN —A European spacecraft and two shoebox-size satellites are about to launch to survey the aftermath from NASA’s DART mission, which intentionally slammed into an asteroid named Dimorphos and altered its orbit two years ago. The European Space Agency’s Hera mission is expected to lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 10:52 a.m. The spacecraft and its two CubeSat companions are slated to arrive at the asteroid Dimorphos, and the larger asteroid it orbits named Didymos, in late 2026. NASA planned the DART, or Double Asteroid Redirection Test, mission to carry out a full-scale assessment of asteroid deflection technology on behalf of planetary defense. But many questions remain, including whether the DART spacecraft merely left behind a crater or if its momentum completely reshaped Dimorphos.

CNN —It is “absolutely impossible” for Communist China to become Taiwan’s motherland because the island’s government is older, Taiwan’s president has said in a carefully timed speech that underscores the intense historical rivalry between the two. Despite having never controlled Taiwan, China’s ruling Communist Party has vowed to “reunify” with the self-governing democracy, by force if necessary. But many people on the island view themselves as distinctly Taiwanese and have no desire to be part of the People’s Republic of China. In Beijing, the CCP took power and founded the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on October 1, 1949. They later joined Taiwan’s evolution into a democracy and have made significant ideological transformations, including favoring closer ties with Communist China.

TOKYO — A regional airport in southwest Japan was closed on Wednesday after a U.S. bombshell, most likely dropped during World War II to stem “kamikaze” attacks, exploded near its runway, causing nearly 90 flight cancellations. Miyazaki Airport shut its runway after the explosion caused a crater 23 feet wide and nearly 3 feet deep in the middle of the taxiway next to the runway, according to a Japanese transport ministry official. No injuries were reported, but live cam footage showed an airplane had been taxiing nearby just two minutes before the explosion, according to local broadcaster MRT. Multiple unexploded bombs have previously been found at Miyazaki airport, the transport ministry official said. More than 79 years since the end of the war, unexploded bombs from the intense airstrikes are still found across Japan today.

The 67-year-old former defense minister, who last week won a close-fought contest to lead the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was confirmed earlier in the day as prime minister by parliament. In his victory speech on Friday, Ishiba spoke about the need to beef up Japan’s security after recent territorial incursions by Chinese and Russian military vessels. Five of the lawmakers who contested the leadership race with him have not been included in his government nor given key party jobs. ☆ China stocks see best week since 2008 on stimulus impact as most Asia markets rise

Chinese markets clocked their best week in almost 16 years as the mainland’s CSI 300 rallied 15.7% this week, buoyed by several economic stimulus measures by the central bank. The last time the index saw a bigger weekly gain was the week ending Nov. 14, 2008. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index recorded a weekly gain of 12.75%, making it the index’s best week since February 1998, according to FactSet data. Tokyo’s headline inflation rate eased to 2.2%, down from August’s 2.6%. A slate of fresh U.S. economic data also supported the market’s gains, with weekly jobless claims falling more than expected, pointing to a steady labor market.

Ishiba, a straight-talking former defense minister, will take office on Tuesday when Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his cabinet ministers resign and Ishiba is elected his successor by members of the LDP-controlled parliament. TOYKO — A Japanese man said to have spent the world’s longest time on death row was cleared in a retrial of the 1966 murders of four people on Thursday, ending his family’s search for justice for a wrongful conviction. On Thursday, the Shizuoka district court acquitted the former boxer. He spent 48 years behind bars — more than 45 of them on death row — making him the world’s longest-serving death row inmate, according to the rights group, Amnesty International. Hakamata’s lawyers had argued that DNA tests on bloodstained clothing said to be their client’s showed the blood was not his. Amnesty International hailed the exoneration as a “pivotal moment for justice” and urged Japan to scrap the death penalty.
