North Carolina’s election board voted Monday to give residents in the western part of the state, which was hit hardest by Hurricane Helene, greater flexibility to vote by mail and run their elections. Previously, voters were limited to dropping absentee ballots off at the board of elections or early voting sites in their counties. Some of the planned voting sites are being used as shelters and warehouses for incoming sites, state officials said, while others were damaged or made inaccessible by the storm. The state’s voter registration deadline of Friday was not extended. South Carolina extended its voter registration deadline to Oct. 14, while Georgia officials say election operations are expected to continue smoothly.

A hurricane warning was issued for parts of Mexico's Yucatan state, and much of Florida's west coast was under hurricane and storm surge watches. It had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (257 kph), the National Hurricane Center said. Its center could come ashore Wednesday in the Tampa Bay area, and it could remain a hurricane as it moves across central Florida toward the Atlantic Ocean. Two executives at Smartmatic, a voting machine company, were indicted in Florida on Thursday for allegedly bribing officials in the Philippines to secure contracts ahead of the 2016 election there, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida announced. “No voter fraud has been alleged and Smartmatic is not indicted. These are the values that Smartmatic lives by,” the company said in a statement. Smartmatic has since filed a major defamation suit against Fox News and its parent company over the network’s reporting on the stolen election claims. Marc Serota for ReutersA tropical depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Debby north of Cuba on Saturday and was predicted to become a hurricane as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico on a collision course with the Florida coast. A hurricane warning was in effect for sections of the state's coast with tropical storm warnings for the Florida Keys. Debby is the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season after Tropical Storm Alberto, Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm Chris, all of which formed in June. We're doing everything that we need to be prepared to face a tropical storm," Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said. "We've been in Florida our whole lives, in South Florida, so hurricanes are not really a big, big thing," Silverman said.

The Honolulu metro area in Hawaii, meanwhile, saw the nation’s highest annual inflation rate in May, at 5.2%. Housing costs have therefore eased over the past year, tugging inflation overall much lower. Tight housing-market conditions are also plaguing New York, which at one point boasted the lowest inflation rate in the country.
