NEW YORK (AP) — Historical novels by Jayne Anne Phillips and Paul Harding and Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s dystopian prison novel “Chain-Gang All-Stars” are among the nominees on the National Book Awards long list for fiction. The judges, who include authors, critics and booksellers, will narrow the lists to five next month, and winners will be announced Nov. 15 during a dinner ceremony in downtown Manhattan. The foundation also will present honorary awards to poet Rita Dove and bookseller Paul Yamazaki of the famed City Lights store in San Francisco. Drew Barrymore had been scheduled to host the ceremony but was dropped by the foundation after she resumed her talk show in the midst of the Hollywood actors and writers strike. The foundation has not yet named a replacement.

To a linguist, there is so much to appreciate in just about every word. And over the past couple of weeks, I have been delighting in none other than the word “blink.”This delight was inspired by Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. In fact, in different ways, the word “blink” points us both backward and forward in time. Justice Jackson’s usage of the term was apparently the result of the expression “blinks reality,” which is relatively common in legal writings. “Blink” had come to mean “neglect” by the 18th century, and the usage was ordinary up through the Gilded Age.

A New York appeals court on Tuesday dismissed the New York attorney general’s civil case against Donald J. Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and potentially limited the case against the former president and his family business, which is set to go to trial in October. Charles III has commissioned new works for his coronation, adding to the rich tapestry of pieces composed for the occasion. The first coronation music was likely sung chants, which, starting in 1603 with the coronation of James I, were refashioned into coronation anthems now with English text.
