New York CNN —A stalemate in Washington could destroy a landmark tax deal that was painstakingly hammered out among 140 countries over the better part of a decade. Some analysts say that the United States’ inability to ratify the deal could lead to a tax war among the richest nations that would hit tech behemoths like Google, Apple, Meta and Amazon particularly hard. Canada recently implemented a local tax on the world’s largest tech companies, something the OECD treaty had sought to avoid. New Zealand has also said it will implement its own digital services tax on large multinational companies beginning in 2025. The FTC also said that documents showed that competing mattress suppliers would lose access to its most important retail channel.

CNN —The number of available jobs in the US unexpectedly grew in May, signaling continued resilience in the nation’s labor market. Job openings jumped higher to 8.14 million in May, from a downwardly revised 7.91 million in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report released Tuesday. While both hires and job openings rates (as a percentage of total employment) ticked higher for May, the quits rate and layoffs rate were unchanged. The labor market appears to be at a crossroads, Nick Bunker, Indeed Hiring Lab’s head of economic research, wrote in commentary posted Tuesday. But some Fed officials have noted that the job market has lost momentum recently and that it’s highly unclear whether it will continue to hold steady or weaken further.

Opinion | How Will Trump’s Conviction Affect the Election?

To the Editor:Re “‘Guilty’ May Not Matter,” by Frank Bruni (Opinion, June 2):Mr. Bruni fears that Donald Trump’s newfound status as a convicted felon may not be enough for him to lose the election. Although Mr. Bruni may be right, he and the rest of us who desperately want to keep this despicable demagogue from returning to the White House should consider why so many millions would vote for a candidate with a criminal record. Mr. Trump’s appeals to grievance and nostalgia for a bygone era have found fertile ground among the non-college-educated working class whose economic advancement has stalled over the past several decades. In many cases Mr. Trump simply exploits racism and xenophobia, but legitimate injury is there as well. With his declarations of a system rigged against both him and his supporters, Mr. Trump has cynically channeled anger at elites who have successfully ridden out or even engineered capitalism’s latest jolts.

The US stock market is shrinking, and investors are pulling their money out at a near-record pace as storm clouds gather over the US economy. A shrinking market: The stock market isn’t the economy (for the most part). Stock futures are near flat Tuesday night as investors geared up for private payroll data while analyzing the latest corporate earnings. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures also each rose just around 0.1%. "Upcoming labor market releases are a clear focus for the broad market," said Bill Northey, investment director at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. "Investors are eyeing the most recent readings on labor market health — JOLTS today, the ADP survey tomorrow and the [Bureau of Labor Statistics] labor report on Friday. All are important data points from a monetary policy standpoint."

Cooling labor also extended a Treasury rally, with yields on the benchmark 10-year note dropping over seven basis points. Advertisement"When the job market was red-hot in 2022, Fed officials were getting concerned that wage-price pressures could cause inflation to accelerate out of control," Comerica's chief economist Bill Adams said. "Most labor indicators are pointing to a considerably cooler job market now. In Bank of America's view, a reading of 125,000-175,000 would be the optimal range, pointing to continued strength without the need to keep interest rates higher for longer. The bank said a reading in that range would be a catalyst for further stock market gains.

Job openings, a measure of labor demand, were down 296,000 to 8.059 million on the last day of April, the lowest since February 2021. Market participants had their focus on the JOLTS data ahead of Friday's U.S. job report, which is expected to show 185,000 new jobs created in May, up from 175,000 in April. "Certainly we had the JOLTS data which was pretty weak. The JOLTS report followed data on Monday showing a second straight month of slowdown in manufacturing activity and an unexpected decline in construction spending. In afternoon trading, the dollar index was up 0.1% at 104.12, having fallen to its lowest since mid-April overnight at 103.99.

Job openings fell more than forecast in April, signaling a potential weakening in the labor market that could provide the Federal Reserve with more impetus to start lowering interest rates. The Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey released Tuesday showed that the level of employment vacancies slipped to 8.06 million for the month, down by nearly 300,000 from March and close to 19% lower than a year ago. The ratio of job openings to available workers edged down from 1.2 to 1, after being around 2 to 1 when openings peaked above 12 million in March 2022. Fed officials watch the JOLTS report closely for signs of labor market slack as they look for direction on monetary policy. While job openings slid, hires moved slightly higher as did separations and quits, a sign of worker confidence in the ability to move to other positions.

Donald J. Trump’s conviction on nearly three dozen felony counts plunges the country into unmapped political terrain, a rare moment that could reshuffle a 2024 race that for months has been locked in stasis and defined by a polarizing former president. The extraordinary conviction of a former president unleashes a series of unprecedented constitutional, electoral and logistical questions. Less clear is whether even Thursday’s striking verdict will shake the calcified public opinion of Mr. Trump, who for nearly a decade has defied predictions of his political demise. Now he must move through the rituals of an American presidential campaign as a criminal. The country will watch as Mr. Trump argues with President Biden over his criminal record next month at their first debate, in addition to sparring over the economy, foreign policy, immigration and abortion rights.

New York CNN —Welcome to jobs week. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said last week that a weakening labor market would be a reason to reduce interest rates. It’s hard to imagine that this jobs report will substantially move the needle on Fed policy, said Michael Brown, a senior research strategist at Pepperstone. The Conference Board’s February Consumer Confidence survey found that “Consumers’ appraisal of the labor market was more positive in March” than in previous months. The week ahead: While the main event this week is Friday’s jobs report, there’s plenty of other jobs data this week for traders to grab on to.
