However, despite his gains, Carter's leadership came under scrutiny as Americans continued to struggle with high inflation and unemployment rates, the White House reported. All of the hostages were eventually returned safely home, but many criticized Carter's lack of military retaliation after the incident, the failed 1980 mission, and the resulting loss of life.

James Earl Carter, Jr., more commonly known as Jimmy Carter, served as the 39th U.S. president from 1977 to 1981. In 1970, Washington became the first state to create a Department of Ecology. Using executive powers, he established the Washington State Indian Affairs Commission in 1967 and the State Women’s Council in 1971. A Republican-controlled chamber could thwart Harris’ nominees to fill out her administration and the courts, along with her legislative agenda. Top Senate Republicans told NBC News she would need their sign-off to secure votes on any judicial nominees, including for the Supreme Court. The prospect of a split Congress looms over a possible Harris win even if Democrats have a strong year and sweep every swing state. And if it’s a GOP-led Senate, Republicans would control a floor vote. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, would have seniority to be the next Judiciary Committee chair and said he intends to claim the position if Republicans win control.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

CNN —Four years ago, North Carolina voters handed Democrats one of the party’s toughest losses and one of its most consequential wins. The race to succeed the term-limited Cooper, however, seems to be leaning toward the Democratic nominee, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein. CNNOver the last few decades, a growing number of Christians have left traditional, predominantly White evangelical churches. The post-evangelical movement predates former President Donald Trump’s political rise, but has been accelerated by his alliance with White conservative evangelical leaders. White evangelicals have been a key part of the Republican coalition since the 1980s. The exit polls estimated that 26% of 2016 voters and 28% of 2020 voters were White evangelicals. Still, Trump has maintained overwhelming support among White evangelicals since consolidating their support during the 2016 Republican primary.

CNN —Venezuelans headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in a highly consequential presidential election where the country’s longtime strongman, Nicolas Maduro, will face one of his greatest political challenges yet, say analysts. Of the nine other candidates running for the presidency, his biggest challenger is a unified opposition movement that overcame their divisions to form a coalition known as the Democratic Unitary Platform. The opposition movement has maintained its momentum despite sustained government repression, in which their first-choice candidate, María Corina Machado, was disqualified from running. The government has also created significant impediments for the millions of Venezuelans abroad to vote, including widely unattainable passport and residency requirements. But several international election observers have announced this week that they will no longer travel to Venezuela to monitor the vote.

CNN —The final night of the Republican National Convention has kicked off in Milwaukee. Pompeo’s claim about the southern border under TrumpFormer Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed at the Republican National Convention Thursday that the US-Mexico border was “closed” during Donald Trump’s presidency. Facts First: This characterization of Trump’s tariffs is misleading. It’s true that Trump’s tariffs on China raised billions of dollars for the US government, but the duties were paid by US companies – not China. For example, Trump’s tariffs were imposed, in part, to boost the US manufacturing sector – but that industry lost jobs.
