Fed Chair Jay Powell said Thursday that he would not resign if president-elect Donald Trump asked him to. Asked whether he would step down amid chatter that Trump's advisors had suggested he do so, Powell replied, "No." Trump himself nominated Powell as Federal Reserve chairman in 2017 in his first administration. Powell made the comments during his regularly scheduled remarks following the release of the Federal Open Market Committee's latest statement on interest rate policy. Prosecutors have said in court filings that four aggravating factors exist in the case against Kohberger, who turns 30 later this month, making the crime more severe and the death penalty warranted. Pursuant to a 2013 Supreme Court decision, DOJ monitors only go inside polling places with the agreement of local officials, unless they have a court order. In their federal lawsuits, Missouri and Texas officials argued that their state laws did not permit federal officials to be present at polling places. Florida did not file a lawsuit, but Secretary of State Cord Byrd told the Justice Department in a letter Friday that state law does not allow DOJ officials in polling places. The DOJ was allowed to monitor polling places, he wrote, but was not allowed to send observers inside without a federal court order. Armed federal law enforcement officers are generally prohibited from entering polling places, which are secured by local law enforcement agencies.

The S & P 500 could rally nearly 23% into 2025 if the Republicans sweep the election, according to Jay Hatfield, founder & CIO of InfraCap. Specifically, Hatfield said he sees the broad market index climbing to 7,000 next year. The odds of that scenario grew overnight, as former President Donald Trump took the lead in the U.S. presidential race over Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite the current electoral backdrop, Hatfield cautioned he's not as confident as the market is about Trump regaining the presidency. "It seems like the odds might be a little bit ahead of the data so far," he told CNBC.

Those relationships may prove especially valuable in the coming days as the 2024 election comes to a close. In swing states like North Carolina and Michigan, local journalists have doubled as campaign experts, covering presidential candidate rallies and interviewing voters by the dozen. CNN asked seven swing state editors and reporters about what they’ve been experiencing in the run-up to Election Day. In Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has invested heavily in statewide polling and stationed reporters across the city and state. “Months of reporting and listening have told us this: Georgia voters are largely dissatisfied with our country’s direction,” editor-in-chief Leroy Chapman Jr. said.

They have also considered the impact of potential tariffs proposed by former President Donald Trump. Some on Wall Street view a Harris win as a potential obstacle for antitrust and megacap technology stocks. "Regulatory scrutiny will probably help a lot of M & A activity under Trump — Harris, it'll be a little more of the status quo," said Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets. This could "slow the pace of the AI revolution," he said in a recent post to X that also called a Harris win "more bullish" for the industry. Some investors also view Tesla as a likely winner under a Trump administration, given CEO Elon Musk's close ties to the former president.
