Some of the nation’s leading civil rights groups told NBC News that they are gearing up for a flood of legal battles to protect the protesters. Under Rubinstein, America First Legal has in the past year filed four lawsuits that provide a glimpse into how the Trump administration could differ from its predecessor. America First Legal alleges in the suits that the State Department, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Education have protected pro-Hamas extremists. Rubinstein in an interview brought up an additional law he expects a second Trump administration could enforce. The Knight Institute said although it expects the new Trump administration to aggressively police speech, it is prepared to fight back.

A missing Israeli-Moldovan rabbi has been found dead in the United Arab Emirates, in what Israel called an antisemitic murder on Sunday. The Israeli government said the death of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, who has been missing in the Gulf state since Thursday, was a "criminal antisemitic terrorist event." CNN —Israel says it is investigating after Hamas released photos purportedly showing the body of a female hostage in Gaza. Speaking during his weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at this point Israel could not verify the images. The prime minister also said he had spoken with the mother of the hostage purportedly shown in the photos. More than 250 people were taken hostage and about 1,200 killed during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. At least 34 of the hostages taken on October 7 are thought to be dead.

The Israeli military late on Sunday conducted a heavy barrage of airstrikes on the southern outskirts of Beirut where Hezbollah holds sway, with fighter jets racing across the skies above the Lebanese capital and deafening explosions ringing out for miles. The airstrikes followed a series of sweeping evacuation warnings on Sunday by the Israeli military for the area, known as the Dahiya — more warnings than in any other day this month. They also came as Hezbollah fired about 250 projectiles into Israel on Sunday, one of the group’s largest aerial attacks over the past year. Analysts said that Israel’s ramped up attacks in recent days were intended to pressure Hezbollah into accepting a cease-fire on favorable terms. Hezbollah, however, has shown few signs of backing down, and both sides have pledged to keep up their attacks while negotiations are taking place.

Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, may have touched off a diplomatic incident last week when she said on a Dutch television show that she regretted having used the word “pogrom” the day after attacks on Israelis in her city surrounding a soccer match. Since the incidents, which began late on the night before the Nov. 7 game, Ms. Halsema, a member of the Green Party, said she had seen “the word politicized to the point of propaganda.” In response, Gideon Saar, Israel’s foreign minister, called Ms. Halsema’s statement “utterly unacceptable.” Referring to the attacks, he said, “There is no other word for this than a pogrom.”The word “pogrom” described loosely organized, often deadly riots by local Russians or Eastern Europeans against Jews from the 1880s through the end of the Bolshevik Revolution some 40 years later. Though today it is applied to many ethnically or religiously based attacks, it has never shed its original association, and to describe an attack on Jews as a pogrom will always disinter century-old collective memories. The eagerness of Mr. Saar to reaffirm the word — echoing statements made by Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, and Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. State Department’s special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism — reflected the international Jewish community’s increased sensitivity to antisemitism in the year since Hamas led an attack into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed 1,200 and kidnapped about 250 others.

Hezbollah fired more than 60 projectiles into Israel before noon on Sunday, a day after an Israeli strike in the heart of the Lebanese capital killed at least 20 people. Three Israeli defense officials said the strike was an attempt to assassinate a top Hezbollah military commander, Mohammad Haidar. One of the Israeli defense officials, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive military operations, later said that Mr. Haidar was not killed. On Sunday, waves of air raid sirens blared throughout much of northern Israel, including the hilltop town of Safed. Magen David Adom, an Israeli emergency rescue service, said it treated a woman in northern Israel who suffered a shrapnel injury.

Israel’s new defense minister has said security forces would no longer apply administrative detention orders to Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, and thus only Palestinian suspects can be held indefinitely without trial. Israel Katz, a long-time ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was appointed defense minister earlier in November and announced the decision on Friday. In 2019, Trump abandoned the long-held U.S. position that West Bank settlements are illegal before it was restored by President Joe Biden. Settler immunity from administrative detention coincides with heightened rhetoric from Israeli ministers calling for the West Bank to be annexed. The U.N. said four Palestinian children have been killed every week in the West Bank on average since the current conflict began, a three-fold increase from the first nine months of 2023.

Israeli bombardment has killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon and wounded more than 15,000, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The strikes occurred at 4 a.m. local time, destroying an eight-story building and leaving a crater in the ground. Also on Saturday a drone strike killed one person and injured another in the southern port city of Tyre, according to the state-run National News Agency. The agency said the people killed and injured in Tyre were fishermen. The strikes came a day after heavy bombardment of Beirut’s southern suburbs and as heavy ground fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants continues in southern Lebanon, with Israeli troops pushing farther from the border.

CNN —The Israeli Prime Minister’s office says that an Israeli citizen living in the United Arab Emirates has been missing for two days. The PMO said in a statement Saturday that Zvi Kogan, an Israeli-Moldovan citizen, had been missing since Thursday afternoon. Kogan is a representative of Chabad, a religious movement of Hasidic Jews with communities, synagogues and other institutions in many countries. This is a developing story. More to come.

Under the Rome statute that created the ICC, its signatories are obliged to carry out arrest warrants, no matter the rank of the accused. Mohammed Deif was accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including for his role as a mastermind of Oct. 7. Some European countries have not said whether they would arrest Netanyahu if he visited, including a number of Israeli allies. Britain respects the independence of the ICC, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson said, but did not say whether Britain would arrest Netanyahu. Netanyahu and the other two Israelis facing the arrest warrants join a group that includes Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been subject to an ICC arrest warrant over alleged war crimes in Ukraine since last year.

Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban said Friday he would invite Benjamin Netanyahu to visit his country and that he would guarantee that an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against the Israeli prime minister would "not be observed." Ireland's prime minister Simon Harris said Friday that his country would be prepared to arrest the Israeli prime minister if he came to the country. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The more Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is cast as an international pariah, the more many Israelis appear to embrace him. The arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court on Thursday for Mr. Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, on accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip spurred a wave of outrage and condemnation across Israel’s political spectrum. “It is embarrassing to see Netanyahu and Gallant in the same place as Muammar el-Qaddafi, Slobodan Milosevic, Ratko Mladic and several African dictators,” wrote Sima Kadmon, a political columnist and longtime Netanyahu critic, in the Friday editions of the popular Yediot Ahronot newspaper. Still, she added, “the allegations of anti-Israel-ism are understandable. Perhaps even antisemitism.”Despite deep domestic polarization, analysts said, most Israelis were likely to rally around Mr. Netanyahu’s repudiation of the court’s decision, which he denounced as “antisemitic" for “falsely accusing” the democratically elected prime minister of Israel.

CNN —A decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials was met with anger and annoyance at Jerusalem’s bustling Mahane Yehuda Market. Gil Siegal, a legal scholar at the Ono Academic College in Israel, said The Hague-based court’s decision has united Israelis. Most Israelis still support the war in Gaza, he said, seeing it as a just fight and the only means to keep their country safe. The ICC “is saying that Gallant and Netanyahu are equal to Mohammed Deif… this is something that Israelis truly cannot comprehend, truly, truly cannot comprehend,” Siegal said. “Israel’s war machine does not only destroy Gaza but also hurts Israelis – in body and in spirit,” he told CNN.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday night to reject three efforts led by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders that would have blocked certain offensive weapons sales to Israel. In a speech on the Senate floor ahead of the vote, Sanders argued that the resolutions "would not affect any of the systems Israel uses to defend itself from incoming attacks," focusing instead on offensive weapons. "As I have said many, many times: Israel had the absolute right to respond to that horrific Hamas attack, as any other country would. I don’t think anybody here in the United States Senate disagrees with that," he said in his floor speech. More than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive into the dense enclave since the attack, according to health officials in Gaza.

CNN —The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and a senior Hamas official, accusing them of war crimes during and after the October 7 attacks on Israel last year. While ICC warrants don’t guarantee arrests, they could significantly restrict Netanyahu’s ability to travel to ICC member states. The prime minister said at the time that “trust between me and the minister of defense has cracked.” Katz, who served as foreign minister until then, became defense minister. After an arrest warrant has been issued, the ICC sends requests for cooperation to member states. Previous leaders who have been faced with ICC arrest warrants have experienced limitations on their ability to travel, unable to pass through countries legally obliged to arrest them.

CNN —Israeli strikes on northern and central Gaza killed at least 87 Palestinians in 24 hours, local health authorities said, as the death toll in the enclave surpassed 44,000. At least 65 people were killed in Israeli strikes on northern Gaza overnight, a medical official in the enclave told CNN on Thursday, adding that the toll expected to rise. Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, told CNN on Thursday morning that casualties were still being brought to the hospital. The strikes come as the death toll in Gaza climbs after Israel’s renewed offensive in the north of the territory. Meanwhile in Lebanon, Israel launched airstrikes on the southern suburb of Beirut early Thursday, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA).

It has been nearly a month since Israel sent more than 100 jets and drones to strike Iranian military bases, and the world is still waiting to see how Iran will respond. It is a loaded pause in the high-risk conflict this year between the two Middle East powers. The first volley of strikes came in April, when Iran decided to avenge an attack on one of its diplomatic compounds by directly bombarding Israel with at least 300 missiles and drones. Even then, Israel waited days, not hours, to respond. Not long ago, analysts might have predicted that any direct strike by Iran on Israel, or by Israel on Iran, would have prompted an immediate conflagration.

Israel resumed its bombing campaign on Thursday in the Hezbollah-controlled area south of Beirut, as a top U.S. envoy visited Israel to talk to officials there and try to nail down the terms of a cease-fire between the two warring sides. Amos Hochstein, the senior Biden administration official, was expected to meet on Thursday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Omer Dostri, the prime minister’s spokesman. A day earlier, Mr. Hochstein wrapped up two days of talks with Lebanese officials and spoke of having made “additional progress” in the quest to end Israel’s yearlong conflict with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Speaking to reporters in Beirut on Wednesday, Mr. Hochstein said he would go to Israel “to try to bring this to a close if we can.”After days of tense calm in the Lebanese capital, Israel issued new evacuation orders early on Thursday for the Dahiya, the densely packed area south of the city where Hezbollah holds sway. That was soon followed by airstrikes, which the Israeli military said had targeted the group’s command headquarters and military infrastructure.

The court also issued a warrant for the arrest of Hamas’s military chief, Muhammad Deif, accusing him, too, of crimes against humanity, including murder, hostage taking and sexual violence. Israel has said that it killed Mr. Deif in an airstrike, but the court said it could not determine whether he was dead. Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant are unlikely to find themselves in a courtroom standing trial on the charges anytime soon. The court has no police force to make arrests and neither Israel nor its chief ally, the United States, is among its member nations. But the order carries significant moral weight, it is likely to restrict the leaders’ travel around the world, and it further isolates Israel as it prosecutes wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

The Senate on Wednesday resoundingly rejected a series of three resolutions to block weapons transfers to Israel, but the move to curtail American support for the war in Gaza drew substantial support from Democrats, reflecting growing consternation in the party over the conflict. Seventeen Senate Democrats and two independents backed at least one of the measures, a display of deepening divisions over Israel’s conduct after 13 months of war and the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians. The measures were offered by Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, who has been a vocal critic of Israel’s tactics in the war. He has also been a frequent critic of the Biden administration for continuing to support Israel militarily despite ample evidence of human rights violations in Gaza. In the days since the election, he has also argued that the administration’s Israel policy is partially to blame for the Democrats’ election losses.

We will also give $5 million for every hostage,” Netanyahu said. “The prime minister is trading the hostages’ lives,” said Einav Zangauker. Investigators discovered that a low-level Israeli soldier had illegally removed Hamas documents from a military database and passed them to Eli Feldstein, a communications consultant working for Netanyahu, prosecutors said. Feldstein acted “with the intention of influencing public opinion in Israel on the negotiations regarding the hostages and in particular the issue of the contribution of the demonstrations to the strengthening of Hamas,” prosecutors said. Days after it was published, Netanyahu cited the article as evidence of Hamas’ intent “to use psychological warfare on the hostage families” and to put pressure on the Israeli government. The Israeli soldier accused of leaking the document to him has also been arrested, along with three other military personnel, prosecutors said. “For the past few days, my office has been under a wild and unrestrained attack,” Netanyahu said at the time.

The the theft by armed men of nearly 100 trucks loaded with food and other humanitarian aid over the weekend sent prices soaring and caused shortages in central Gaza where hundreds of thousands are crammed into squalid tent camps. On Monday, a crowd of people waited outside a shuttered bakery in the central city of Deir al-Balah. A woman who had been displaced from Gaza City, identifying herself as Umm Shadi, said the price of flour had climbed to 400 shekels (over $100) a bag, if it can even be found. Nora Muhanna, another woman displaced from Gaza City, said she was leaving empty-handed after waiting five hours for a bag of bread for her children.
