Ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and neighboring Vancouver, Washington, were set on fire early Monday morning, police said, just over a week out from Election Day. The Portland Police Bureau said an "incendiary device" was placed inside of a sidewalk ballot box in the Central City district. At around 4 a.m. local time, about a half-hour after the reported fire in Portland, police in Vancouver also responded to a ballot box fire. Earlier this month, the Vancouver bomb squad responded to reports of a "suspicious device" near a downtown ballot box, police said. The device was "safely removed" and the ballot box itself was "not compromised," according to a news release.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Thursday he will seek resentencing for Lyle and Erik Menendez in their parents' murders, paving the way for their potential release from prison after decades. Defense attorneys also provided evidence that one of the members of the Menudo boy band alleged he was sexually abused by José Menendez, Gascón said. Robert Roberson, 57, was set to become the first person in the U.S. executed in a "shaken baby" case until members of the state House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee issued a subpoena to have him testify at a legislative hearing this week. Despite efforts by the attorney general's office to appeal, as the execution was scheduled to get underway on the evening of Oct. 17, the Texas Supreme Court, in an 11th-hour decision, sided with the lawmakers, handing Roberson a temporary reprieve. A highly anticipated legislative hearing began Monday but without its key witness: a Texas inmate whose execution for his daughter's "shaken baby" death was narrowly averted last week. Texas is preparing to put a man to death Thursday in what would be the nation’s first execution involving a case of “shaken baby syndrome,” a diagnosis that has been re-evaluated in more recent years, leading to the overturning of similar convictions. Prosecutors argued that Nikki must have been shaken to death because she had been diagnosed with “the triad” — a swollen and bleeding brain and retinal hemorrhaging — symptoms once believed to be indisputable evidence of shaken baby syndrome. In 2009, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed the name of shaken baby syndrome to the more broadly defined “abusive head trauma” to include injuries caused by mechanisms other than shaking alone. It is now medical consensus that other medical conditions, including infections, accidental trauma and pre-existing illnesses, can also cause the symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome. Hundreds of possible shaken baby and abusive head trauma cases are reported to hospitals in the U.S. every year, according to a nonprofit advocacy group.

CNN —A Travis County judge granted a Texas House committee’s last-minute temporary restraining order request against the state just 90 minutes before Robert Roberson was scheduled to be executed Thursday. While authorities have not confirmed the execution is delayed, Roberson’s attorneys and the committee fighting for him told CNN they believe the execution is currently halted. “This is an injustice and his blood is on Abbott and Anderson County,” she told CNN. I did not hear his voice,” Brian Wharton, the former detective who oversaw the investigation into Nikki’s death, told state lawmakers Wednesday at a hearing featuring the case. I don’t want to be there, I don’t want to watch it happen,” Wharton told CNN.

One year after an Army reservist perpetrated a mass shooting across Lewiston, Maine, lawyers representing survivors and families of the victims said Tuesday they are pursuing negligence claims against the federal government that could pave the way for 100 individual lawsuits. “Today marks the first step toward ensuring accountability and justice for the families and victims of the worst mass shooting in Maine history,” lawyer Benjamin Gideon of Gideon Asen LLC said in a statement. Sean "Diddy" Combs is expected to appear Thursday afternoon before the federal judge in New York assigned to oversee his trial, which the embattled hip-hop mogul’s lawyers would like to begin next spring. Deadlines may be set for various issues related to the trial of Combs, 54, who pleaded not guilty last month to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. A lawyer said Combs “vehemently denies” claims related to that case. Another lawyer for Combs, Marc Agnifilo, has similarly denied the criminal allegations against him. However, they told Judge Arun Subramanian there is “voluminous” evidence in the case, including “several terabytes of electronic material,” which they’ve begun to turn over to the defense.

The new judge overseeing next year's trial of the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students has moved back its tentative start date to August from June. Ada County District Court Judge Steven Hippler's order, dated Tuesday, comes after suspect Bryan Kohberger made his first appearance in a Boise court on Sept. 26. The judge wants the trial to begin Aug. 11 and said it could run through Nov. 7, including a penalty phase if Kohberger is convicted. At the hearing, Hippler set the ground rules for defense lawyers and Latah County prosecutors as they navigate his courtroom in the high-profile case. A potential motive remains unclear, and Kohberger's defense denies he was involved.

After announcing their newest correspondent, they showed throwback footage from a Peabody award-winning “Dateline” episode in which Kotb interviewed a teacher. “Blayne Alexander is an outstanding journalist who brings depth and perspective to every story she tells.
