The project at Leshan is dubbed the Longwei, or Dragon Might, Project and is also referred to as the Nuclear Power Development Project in documents. This satellite image from Planet Labs PBC shows the Nuclear Power Institute of China's Site No. The site is under the control of the Nuclear Power Institute of China, a subsidiary of the China National Nuclear Corporation, which is tasked with reactor engineering research and testing. The research does not, however, provide clues as to when a Chinese nuclear-powered carrier could be built and become operational, she said. Matthew Funaiole, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ China Power Project, said he doubts China’s next carrier will be nuclear-powered.

The Chinese military has increased its provocative flights around Taiwan by 300% over the last five months, according to the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in the Indo-Pacific Command. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Gen. Kevin Schneider warned that People’s Liberation Air Force activities have increased dramatically since Taiwan’s new president was inaugurated in May. Schneider noted that the Chinese Air Force has maintained the increased activity level since Lai Ching-te was sworn in on May 20. Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that he intends to unify Taiwan with mainland China and has steadily ramped up military pressure on democratically governed Taiwan. Trump has not committed to defending Taiwan during a Chinese military invasion.

As tension builds in the Indo-Pacific region, the United States Army trains warfighters to be ready for combat in the event of a military conflict with China. The event, known as JPMRC, or Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center, pits the Army's 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, known as the Bronco Brigade or Bluefor, against an opposing force, Opfor, played by another brigade of Army soldiers in a sprawling war-games exercise held across the Hawaiian islands. Flanagan follows Bluefor's Charlie Company as it braces for battle with Opfor on the desolate, lava-rock-laden Pohakuloa Training Area on the island of Hawaii. Charlie Company's ranking noncommissioned officer is 1st Sgt. AdvertisementOne of the US Navy's best ballistic missile interceptors, the Standard Missile-3, got a workout in the Middle East this year, eliminating Iranian missiles headed for Israel. That's a high cost per intercept, especially if more than one interceptor is fired for each target. An SM-3 Block 1B interceptor missile is launched from the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie during a test in the Pacific. It was then fired a second time during Iran's massive early October barrage, during which Tehran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles at Israel. The industry process, coupled with the exquisite capability of the missile to intercept ballistic missiles, raises the cost of the interceptor.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea test-fired a suspected long-range ballistic missile that is designed to strike the continental United States, its neighbors said Thursday, days before the U.S. presidential election. This would be the first ICBM launch since December for North Korea, a reclusive nuclear-armed state that has been ratcheting up its rhetoric against the U.S. and its allies South Korea and Japan. Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani later said the missile fell into the sea off North Korea’s east coast around 8:37 a.m. He said the launch time of 86 minutes would be the longest ever for a North Korean missile test, and that it could be a new type of missile. North Korea has said the deployment is a “rumor,” while Russian President Vladimir Putin did not deny the reports when asked about them by NBC News last week.

The focus on advanced technologies has put the two countries into a different kind of arms race. The US Air Force secretary suggested that AI could be decisive in future warfare. On Tuesday, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said China has been effectively modernizing the People's Liberation Army, fielding systems with the intent of challenging US forces, especially its high-value combat assets like carriers and satellites. China has built up its Rocket Force, developing capabilities that put US military assets at military bases and airfields across the Indo-Pacific within striking range. The Air Force secretary said that he doesn't think people who say that AI is "going to determine who's the winner in the next battlefield" are "all that far off."

CNN —A small number of North Korean troops are already inside Ukraine, according to two western intelligence officials, and officials expect that number to grow as the North Koreans complete training in eastern Russia and move toward the front lines of the war. The North Korean troops’ presence inside Ukraine goes a step beyond what NATO and the Pentagon confirmed on Monday, which is that roughly 10,000 North Korean troops are training in eastern Russia with some en route to Russia’s Kursk region. A US official said the US can not yet corroborate reports that North Koreans troops are already inside Ukraine. The Russians have been teaching North Korean soldiers basic Russian commands in training, like “fire” and “in position,” South Korean lawmakers told reporters on Tuesday. ‘The number may rise’South Korean intelligence has put the number of North Korean troops inside Russia right now at about 13,000, higher than the US and the UK.

CNN —India and China have reached an agreement on military disengagement along their disputed border, New Delhi said, a step toward reducing frictions between the nuclear-armed neighbors that comes as both countries’ leaders arrive in Russia for a summit. Both foreign ministries declined to comment on whether the two leaders would hold formal one-on-one talks in Kazan. ‘A positive development’The violence in 2020 was followed by a process of disengagement and border talks, but friction points have remained, including areas where both sides previously patrolled but have since become so-called buffer zones. However, even with that restoration, there are other steps that would need to be taken in a long process along the disputed border. “There are many other issues of de-induction and de-mobilization of troops on both sides; infrastructure that has been built, etc.

“Army officials stated that these low mission capable rates, along with the smaller size of the watercraft fleet after divestment, hinder operational readiness and the ability to meet mission requirement,” the report said. After the temporary pier mission ended — the pier was only operational for roughly 20 days in total with a cost of $230 million — the military requested civilian contractor support in bringing the Army’s vessels back to the US. The US military said four of its vessels, supporting a temporary pier built to deliver aid to Gaza by sea, had run aground in heavy seas.
