CNN —Nearly three-quarters of firearms recovered in several Caribbean nations with high crime rates were manufactured in the US, according to the US’s Government Accountability Office (GAO). Almost 5,400 firearms recovered from crime scenes from 2018 to 2022 in several Caribbean nations - including Haiti, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago - can be sourced back to the US, the GAO said. The GAO said they analyzed data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to determine that 88 percent of the recovered and traced firearms in the 25 Caribbean countries they reviewed were handguns. The weapons are typically smuggled through criminal networks, as CNN has previously reported. “Haiti doesn’t produce guns and ammunition, yet the gang members don’t seem to have any trouble accessing those things,” Pierre Esperance, executive director of Haiti’s National Human Rights Defense Network told CNN last May.

“There’s no white knight coming,” a federal law enforcement official told NBC News, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the posture of federal authorities in the coming weeks, after Election Day. Inflation increased slightly in September and moved closer to the Federal Reserve’s target, according to a Commerce Department report Thursday. The personal consumption expenditures price index showed a seasonally adjusted 0.2% increase for the month, with the 12-month inflation rate at 2.1%, both in line with Dow Jones estimates. Fed officials target inflation at a 2% annual rate, a level it has not achieved since February 2021. The annual rate was 0.1 percentage point higher than forecast but the same as in August. Consumer spending rose 0.5%, topping the outlook by 0.1 percentage point.

Inflation increased slightly in September and moved closer to the Federal Reserve's target, according to a Commerce Department report Thursday. The personal consumption expenditures price index showed a seasonally adjusted 0.2% increase for the month, with the 12-month inflation rate at 2.1%, both in line with Dow Jones estimates. Fed officials target inflation at a 2% annual rate, a level it has not achieved since February 2021. The annual rate was 0.1 percentage point higher than forecast but the same as in August. In September, the Fed slashed the rate by a half percentage point, a move virtually unprecedented during an economic expansion.

Professional fund managers have been increasing their bets on stocks since the fourth quarter got underway earlier this month, according to Bank of America. "Watching mutual fund cash levels is typically like watching paint dry, but not this month. That shift is notable ahead of the election and suggests that some fund managers are unconcerned about short-term volatility as votes roll in. Fund managers are underweight that area relative to history, and could rotate into those stocks if they gain more confidence, according to Subramanian.

Goldman Sachs estimates that Helene could shave as much as 50,000 off the payrolls count, though Hurricane Milton probably happened too late to impact the October count. The Boeing strike, meanwhile, could lower the total by 41,000, added Goldman, which is forecasting total payrolls growth of 95,000. Data has been solidYet indicators leading up to the much-watched jobs report show that hiring has continued apace and layoffs are low, despite the damage done from the storms and the strikes. Still, the White House is estimating that the events cumulatively may hit the payrolls count by as many as 100,000. The "disruptions will make interpreting this month's jobs report harder than usual," Jared Bernstein, chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, said Wednesday.
