Three U.S.-based academics won the 2024 Nobel economics prize on Monday for their research into why global inequality persists, especially in countries dogged by corruption and dictatorship. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this,” said Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. Last year, Harvard economic historian Claudia Goldin won the prize for her work highlighting the causes of wage and labour market inequality between men and women. In 2019, economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer won the award for work on fighting poverty. The economics prize has been dominated by U.S. academics since its inception, while U.S.-based researchers also tend to account for a large portion of winners in the scientific fields for which 2024 laureates were announced last week.

In 2023, the fund returned 30.7%, significantly outperforming its benchmark and the S & P 500, which was up 26%. Yiu's decision stems from his belief that Microsoft's business model is about to change significantly in light of the rise of generative AI. Microsoft has been leading the charge in generative AI adoption. The crux of the issue lies in the increased costs associated with providing AI services, according to the outperforming fund manager. Nvidia's chips, while readily available, allows the Silicon Valley company to capture much of the profit from generative AI services instead.

For the eleventh consecutive year, Switzerland topped the list as the world's most talent-competitive country, according to the IMD 2024 World Talent Ranking, signaling its strong and stable talent pool despite the rapidly changing global work landscape. The ranking measures how economies around the world perform when it comes to sustaining their pool of talent. This data is broken down into three buckets: investment in and development of homegrown talent, appeal (the extent to which a country taps into the overseas talent pool) and readiness (the availability of skills and competencies in the talent pool), according to the report. Switzerland remains at the forefront of talent competitiveness, topping the list since the ranking's inception in 2014. Singapore's steady rise is driven by the readiness of its talent pool, rated as No.
