CNN —The reach and credibility of international law is at its lowest in years as governments dismiss arrest warrants in some of the most high-profile cases to come before the International Criminal Court. Paris had fervently supported the Putin warrant, and reiterated its “longstanding commitment to supporting international justice” after the Netanyahu warrant was issued. The founding treaty of the ICC obliges the 124 signatory countries to arrest Netanyahu and Gallant, according to James Joseph, managing editor at Jurist News. The Biden administration’s criticism of the Israel warrants was as emphatic as its support for the Putin warrant. South Africa, an ICC member, ignored a warrant for the arrest of then-Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir in 2015 when he visited.

The RBA has kept its benchmark interest rates at a 13-year high of 4.35% since late last year. Victory, but no mandateMr. Yoon, a conservative leader, has never been popular in South Korea. The vote, analysts said, was more a referendum on his liberal predecessor’s failures than an endorsement of Mr. Yoon. “Peace is meaningless unless it is backed by power,” Mr. Yoon said during the campaign. An election fueled by vitriolMr. Yoon’s party had seen the 2024 elections as an opportunity to win back the chamber. “I call on the National Assembly,” he said, “to immediately stop the outrageous behavior that is paralyzing the functioning of the country with impeachments, legislative manipulation and budget manipulation.”Image Police officers by the National Assembly.

Adam Gray, a Democratic former state lawmaker in California, defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republican incumbent, in a House contest finally decided on Tuesday, nearly a month after Election Day. The contest in California’s vast agricultural heartland, the Central Valley, was the last House race to be determined, giving Democrats 215 seats compared with 220 for Republicans. Though Republicans won more than the 218 seats necessary to control the House, President-elect Trump wants two House members to serve in his administration, and a third, Matt Gaetz, resigned his seat this month. Mr. Gray declared victory on Tuesday evening, two days before counties in California were required to certify their results. The Associated Press had not yet called the race.

His fate will not only depend on whether sufficient Republican senators will defer to the president-elect. That dilemma is especially acute since concern among Republican senators helped derail the Gaetz selection last month. So far, only a small minority of Republican senators have raised questions about Hegseth. But several Republican senators said they hoped such steps would be taken, especially in the case of Hegseth. CNN’s Manu Raju asked North Dakota Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer whether standards had changed since those days.

How Bangladesh’s Economy Was Siphoned Dry
  + stars: | 2024-12-04 | by ( Alex Travelli | Shayeza Walid | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The new governor of Bangladesh’s central bank, Ahsan Mansur, calculates that about $17 billion was siphoned from the country’s financial system in the 15 years before the government of Sheikh Hasina collapsed in August. Other economists guess that the true value looted during Ms. Hasina’s rule, before she fled the country, could exceed $30 billion. And they did incalculable damage to Bangladesh’s economy. “The highest level of political authority realized that the banks are the best place to rob,” said Mr. Mansur, an appointee of an interim government in Bangladesh. For an inside job, that meant taking control of the central bank and the ownership of a clutch of private banks and their boards of directors.

People take part in a rally to demand South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's removal from power, in Seoul, South Korea, December 4, 2024. South Korean lawmakers on Wednesday called for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law only to reverse the move hours later, triggering the biggest political crisis in decades in Asia's fourth-largest economy. Yoon told the nation in a TV address that martial law was needed to defend the country from nuclear-armed North Korea and pro-North anti-state forces, and protect its free constitutional order, although he cited no specific threats. The military said activities by parliament and political parties would be banned, and that media and publishers would be under the control of the martial law command. But within hours of the declaration, South Korea's parliament, with 190 of its 300 members present, unanimously passed a motion requiring martial law be lifted, including all 18 members present from Yoon's party.

That’s an unnerving reality for the United States military, which has nearly 30,000 troops and its largest overseas base in South Korea, serving as a check against a belligerent North Korea and counterweight to an aggressive China in a strategically critical region. ‘Major ramifications’The US-South Korea alliance has long been seen by both countries as a cornerstone of peace in the region, where North Korea continues to threaten South Korea and the US with its illegal weapons program. “Any instability in South Korea has major ramifications for our Indo-Pacific policies,” retired US Col. Cedric Leighton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, pointing to how US troops in the country are geared for a “fight tonight” scenario against North Korea. “We should not be surprised if Pyongyang exploits the domestic crisis in South Korea to its advantage, either rhetorically or otherwise,” he said. And Yoon, who’s taken a harder line on North Korea than many of his predecessors, has been a willingly staunch partner of the US.

In today’s edition, national political correspondent explains why Republicans may not be able to bank on Donald Trump's coalition moving forward. The GOP’s post-election challenge: Turning Trump voters into full-fledged RepublicansBy Steve KornackiEven with their success, this election revealed a challenge for Republicans going forward: The “Trump coalition” and the “GOP coalition” are not quite the same. That was in Maine in 2020, when voters re-elected Republican Sen. Susan Collins while backing Democrat Joe Biden for president. The first involves voters who were motivated to turn out for Trump, but then skipped all of the other races on the ballot. The other factor the GOP will need to address involves Democratic defectors — traditionally Democratic voters who have essentially made an exception for Trump.

Short bursts of movement throughout the day — no matter how small — can help the heart, especially for women, research published Tuesday found. On average, men in the study did 11 short bursts of vigorous activity during the day, some which lasted less than a minute, and women did about nine. Vigorous activity meant it was high intensity, said Emmanuel Stamatakis, a professor of physical activity, lifestyle and population health at the University of Sydney, who led the study. Women who got just under 3.5 minutes of vigorous movement a day, however, were found to have a 45% lower risk of any of the heart problems than women who didn’t log any vigorous movement throughout the day. Getting about 5.5 minutes of vigorous movement per day reduced their risk of a major heart problem by 16%.

The 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players in the 1990s will be deposed Wednesday after a judge ruled he was competent to be questioned about the allegations. They alleged that their coaches and trainers were aware that Bomba was subjecting basketball players to unnecessary prostate examinations and did nothing to stop him. Indiana University is represented by the Indianapolis-based Barnes & Thornburg law firm, university spokesperson Mark Bode wrote in an email. Bomba had played football for Indiana University and was nicknamed “Frankenstein” by coaches and players “due to the large size of his hands and fingers,” the lawsuit added. WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Defense Department, Pete Hegseth, is in peril as Senate Republicans grow increasingly concerned over allegations of drinking and reports about his treatment of women. Given Republicans' slim Senate majority in the next Congress, Hegseth, a former Fox News host, can afford to lose only three GOP votes, assuming all Democrats vote against him. Hegseth did not respond when he was asked for comment on those allegations Tuesday evening at the Capitol.
