Lee Kuan-chen, another INDSR researcher, said Taiwan's military should continue to boost its defense capacity to build public trust. Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te said on Saturday that it is "impossible" for the People’s Republic of China to become Taiwan’s motherland because Taiwan has older political roots. Taiwan's China policy making Mainland Affairs Council said it was an objective fact that since 1949 the People's Republic of China had never ruled the island. "On the contrary, the Republic of China may be the motherland of the people of the People's Republic of China who are over 75 years old," Lai added, to applause.

CNN —It is “absolutely impossible” for Communist China to become Taiwan’s motherland because the island’s government is older, Taiwan’s president has said in a carefully timed speech that underscores the intense historical rivalry between the two. Despite having never controlled Taiwan, China’s ruling Communist Party has vowed to “reunify” with the self-governing democracy, by force if necessary. But many people on the island view themselves as distinctly Taiwanese and have no desire to be part of the People’s Republic of China. In Beijing, the CCP took power and founded the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on October 1, 1949. They later joined Taiwan’s evolution into a democracy and have made significant ideological transformations, including favoring closer ties with Communist China.

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A weakened and “weird” Typhoon Krathon slammed into southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, hitting the island with a storm that has killed two people so far and forced it to shut down for a second day with hundreds of flights grounded and financial markets closed. Krathon made landfall as a much weaker category 1 typhoon around midday at the major port city of Kaohsiung. All domestic flights were canceled for a second day, as well as 236 international ones. Typhoons often hit Taiwan’s east coast facing the Pacific, but Krathon is unusual in that it directly hit the west coast. Local media labeled it a “weird” storm for that reason, and because of how it hovered off the coast before reaching land.

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — Taiwan shut down on Wednesday, grounding hundreds of flights and closing schools, offices and financial markets ahead of the arrival of a weakening Typhoon Krathon, with one person reported dead and torrential rain lashing the island’s south. Although the typhoon has weakened, the threats from a storm surge, strong winds and rain remain as it slowly makes its way toward Taiwan’s coast, weather forecasters said. The typhoon would lose power once it hit land, said Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, but would still bring intense winds and rain. Once it hits land, the typhoon could be downgraded into a tropical depression and dissipate, which has happened only once before in Taiwan, in 2001, forecasters said. In Taipei, some malls and shops remained open, with rain only expected later in the day.

But the senior Lebanese source said the devices had been modified by Israel's spy service "at the production level." Another security source told Reuters that up to three grams of explosives were hidden in the new pagers and had gone "undetected" by Hezbollah for months. "We really got hit hard," said the senior Lebanese security source, who has direct knowledge of the group's probe into the explosions.

AMD sold off on its first-quarter earnings report due in large part to its MI300 sales guidance falling short of sky-high expectations. Nvidia remains the dominant player in AI chips, but AMD is continuing to carve out a lane in the rapidly expanding market. Among the highlights, Su said Microsoft has expanded its use of the AI chips for certain software applications, including messaging app Teams. AMD's data center business is now nearly 50% of companywide revenues, up from 37% in the fourth quarter of 2023. Within data center, sales of both AI chips and traditional server chips will grow in the third quarter, Su said.
