Quantitative and technical strategist Javed Mirza pointed out in a note to clients that the Nasdaq 100 has not set a record high since July. On Monday, the Nasdaq 100 was trading about 2% below its record close. "The Nasdaq 100 just triggered a new short-term 'mechanical sell' signal, diverging from the other North American equity indices," Mirza said. The Nasdaq 100's slump is not the only factor pointing to toward a new phase for the bull market. To be sure, even the late stage phases of a bull market can last for quite a while.

KKM Financial has converted its Essential 40 mutual fund into an ETF, joining the growing shift by asset managers to a more tax-efficient fund model. "A lot of the wealth advisors that I work with really have issues with the capital gain distribution typical to a mutual fund." The newly converted KKM fund will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker ESN. The old mutual fund version of the Essential 40 had a three-star rating from Morningstar. The ETF will have a net expense ratio of 0.70%, equal to that of the old mutual fund.

Tom Lee, Fundstrat's head of research, said in an Oct. 17 note to clients that the firm is opening a six-month "tactical overweight" on the homebuilding sector. The six-month timeline counts on a strong seasonal pattern where homebuilders tend to rally from late October to late April. While the reason for the historical trend is not clear, the fact that it currently coincides with a rate-cutting cycle for the Federal Reserve should lend homebuilders' stocks even more support, Lee said. "The Fed is cutting interest rates, at a time when U.S. housing has been in a recession. The sector exchange-traded funds highlighted by Lee include the iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) , the SPDR S & P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) and the Invesco Building & Construction ETF (PKB) .

Retail brokerage firm Robinhood is launching a new tool for more sophisticated traders as it looks for additional avenues for growth. The firm introduced Robinhood Legend, a desktop-based platform for active traders. So we set out to reimagine what a modern, intuitively designed active trading platform should look like, and built Robinhood Legend from the ground up so traders can do what they need in one place," Quirk said. Beyond the launch of Legend, Robinhood also said it will soon add futures trading and index options to its mobile platform. The new additions for Robinhood are another example of the firm looking to expand beyond its roots as a convenient platform for small-dollar traders.

"Things were going okay before the election contracts, but since we put them on the platform there's been a lot more interest," Sanders said. The election contracts on each site are binary, and they pay out $1 if the correct outcome is chosen and $0 for the incorrect outcome. A fifth arena, Polymarket, is a blockchain-based prediction platform that is not open to U.S. customers. If they prove to be accurate over time, the prediction markets may also serve non-traders such as consultants and fundraisers who want to glean more insight into the election. .SPX mountain 2022-10-12 The S & P 500 has gained more than 60% during this bull market. However, prior bull markets have shown a tendency to lose a little steam in their third year. Bank of America research showed that 10 prior bull markets for the S & P 500 had an average return of -2% in months 25 to 36. Another thing to keep in mind is that even positive third years for bull markets tend to be bumpy. Of course, a slump for the S & P 500 could be an opportunity for small-cap stocks to catch up .

Investors who fear stubborn inflation, if not an outright rebound, got a bit of a salve on Friday morning. Wholesale prices showed no change month over month for September, coming in below expectations. The producer price index report may help offset some of the slight concerns about Thursday's consumer price index report, which was a bit hotter than expected. The personal consumption expenditures price index for September will be released on Oct. 31. The third quarter earnings season will take its first big steps this week, but Wall Street has already been dialing back expectations for months. That shift could be a sign that Wall Street is losing confidence in corporate America. 7 and Other 493 earnings are expected to slow in 3Q, but Other 493 earnings are expected to re-accelerate to low-to-mid teens growth starting in 4Q, while Mag. The tech trade lost some of its steam over the summer, and that could create opportunities for tactical trading in the fourth quarter, several investors told CNBC. The Nasdaq Composite rose 2.6% during the third quarter, lagging behind both the broader S & P 500 's gain of 5.5% and the small Russell 2000's jump of 8.9%. Still, many investors are cautious of abandoning the tech trade completely even after a few bumpy months. Even after the recent slump, those stocks still account for about 31% of the S & P 500, and even more in many funds focused on tech or growth. Inflation could be a market-driving fear again this week when September data is released, according to Bank of America. But last week's stronger-than-expected jobs report has shaken up the consensus outlook for the economy. "After the blowout jobs report, CPI is no longer a 'non-event.' Brian Niccol and Elliott Hill are taking over Starbucks and Nike , respectively, just as a key market that weighed on their predecessors gets a boost. As China's economic stimulus takes shape, it could end up helping these global brands. Nike and Starbucks in China While the exact plans for Niccol and Hill are still unclear, the Chinese market seems like it will be an area of focus. At Starbucks, the company's leadership team in China has already been reshuffled since Niccol took over in September. Still, a rebound for China's consumer won't necessarily boost sales for Starbucks and Nike without better execution.

The September jobs report was surprisingly strong , and the details show that growth came from many different areas of the economy. Within hospitality, food services and drinking places saw jobs jump by 69,000. Professional and business services grew by 17,000 jobs, which is a notable change for a category that had shed jobs in recent months. The only caution flag could be the rise in those with multiple jobs," Roach said. Two key areas that lost jobs last month were manufacturing and transportation and warehousing, though each category shrank by fewer than 10,000 jobs.

Oil prices keep pushing higher as tensions build in the Middle East, and the moves in crude appear to be weighing on the stock market. Overlaying the charts of the United States Oil Fund LP (USO) and the S & P 500 in recent days shows that the fund and the index appear to be inversely correlated. In other words, when the oil fund climbs during the day, the stock market tends to dip, and vice versa. This is a change from rest of the year, when there appeared to be little relationship between the price of oil and the broad stock market. In midday trading Thursday, U.S. crude oil prices were up 4% , and the USO had jumped roughly 3%.

Recent hiccups for Nvidia could be the start of broader weakness for the artificial intelligence boom, and investors should consider dialing back their exposure to the stock, according to one small equity research shop. But last quarter sequential growth slowed again and now I'm concerned that it can continue to slow in Q3 and Q4. Elazar is not completely alone in being skeptical of Nvidia, but it's definitely a contrarian stance. Of the 64 analysts tracked by LSEG, 58 have buy or strong buy ratings on Nvidia, with the remaining six having hold ratings. Nvidia's stock is up 700% since the start of 2023, so being bullish has been the right call for Wall Street analysts.

The funds target distributions equal to six times the dividend payouts on the Nasdaq-100 Index and four times the S & P 500 dividend, respectively. The idea behind the Pacer funds is that the funds will capture more of that upside during market rallies, according to Sean O'Hara, president at Pacer ETF Distributors. The QDPL's website currently shows a distribution yield of 5.79%, or more than four-times the roughly 1.3% dividend yield on the S & P 500, according to YCharts.com. The CBOE Volatility Index , or VIX, fell below 16 on Monday and is now flirting with its lowest level since the July doldrums. "Our historical study of volatility shows that the VIX averaged 22 points in October, 4 points above the current VIX level. We believe the low implied volatility, upcoming October earnings season and elections provide an attractive opportunity for investors to hedge a potential rise in volatility," the note said. The options would have a strike price of 18 and expire in November, serving as a bet that expectations of volatility will rise as the election nears. There are no additional losses on the trade if the VIX actually declines instead.
