CNN —A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” is expected to fetch more than $120 million when it goes up for auction this fall. Sotheby'sThe piece, which measures 51¼ x 38 inches (130 x 96.5 centimeters), depicts Picasso’s lover and “golden muse” Marie-Thérèse Walter, who featured in many of his portraits. In a statement announcing the sale, Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, said: “Picasso’s ‘Femme à la Montre’ is a masterpiece by every measure. LONDON, June 27 (Reuters) - A portrait of an unnamed woman by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt sold for 85.3 million pounds ($108.4 million) on Tuesday, setting a new record price for any work of art sold at an auction in Europe, London-based auction house Sotheby's said. The fall of the hammer at 74 million pounds broke the tension, triggering a collective exhalation in the room and a round of applause. The painting sold to a Hong Kong-based art advisory firm, bidding on behalf of a collector based there. It is now the most expensive Klimt artwork sold at auction anywhere in the world. It was last offered for sale nearly 30 years ago, when it was acquired by the family of the present owner for $11.6 million, according to the auction house.

"Dame mit Fächer" ("Lady with a Fan") - a portrait of an unnamed woman - was still on an easel in Klimt's studio when the painter died in February 1918. It leads Sotheby's Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction on June 27 in London, with a price estimate of around 65 million pounds ($80 million). That price tag makes it "the most valuable ever to have been offered at auction in Europe," according to Sotheby's. "It’s very rare for a Klimt painting of this quality and caliber of a portrait of a woman to come to auction."

The findings of the research, to be led by senior professor and expert on cultural heritage and the Civil War Arturo Colorado, are expected by early 2023. More than half a million people died during the Spanish Civil War and an estimated 150,000 were killed later in repression by Franco's 1939-75 dictatorship, historians estimate.
